Rotherham building controls specialist, BG Controls, has announced that it has expanded its services with e-fficient Energy Systems Ltd.

e-fficient Energy specialises in manufacturing intelligent voltage optimisation and regulation systems, which are designed to reduce and regulate inefficient voltage supply from the national grid.



The benefits of such a system include cost savings and a reduction in carbon footprint of up to 25%. In addition to this, intelligent voltage optimisation and regulation helps to provide a stable power supply, which increases the life span of electrical equipment.

The company manufactures two key solutions, which are the e-VO Thyristor controlled transformer rectifier and the SeR-VO autotransformer. It chooses the technology which best suits the application and the customer's individual needs.

News: UK first from BG Controls helps Bradford Council reduce energy bills

Rotherham building controls specialist, BG Controls, is helping Bradford Metropolitan District Council save money with the installation of state-of-the-art Building Management Systems (BMS) in six of its buildings.

BG Controls devised an innovative solution to control the temperature and environment of Bowling Pool. All swimming pools require pumps to filter out dirty water and maintain a constant temperature but it is not cost effective to have these pumps running at full capacity all of the time.

The Dinnington company developed a complex design solution and installed turbidity sensors in the pools. The turbidity sensor is an emerging technology, which has not been used in the UK before. It measures the cloudiness of the pool to ascertain the quality and state of the water thus determining the frequency that the pumps need to run.

To save the council further money, BG designed an intelligent heating control system for Jacob's Well council offices, Neville Grange care home, Baildon Recreation Centre and Heaton Primary School. The system ensures that the heating is only on when it is needed thus providing its occupants with a comfortable environment and saving a considerable amount of money on energy bills.

For Richard Dunn Sports Centre, BG installed a lighting control system for the exterior of the building. As natural daylight is always fluctuating, the system senses the light levels outside and only turns on the outdoor lighting when it is needed.

All sites can be controlled via one front end, which is based in Flockton House council offices and the systems can also be accessed on Bradford Council's intranet site via a web browser.

Martin Rogers, project manager for BG Controls said: "This project had many challenges which BG overcame to design a bespoke solution to suit Bradford council's needs.

"We researched extensively into turbidity sensors and ran various trials to ensure the sensor would be the best possible system for the council's swimming pools."

"The entire BMS needed an upgrade as it was dated and inefficient. With the new open protocol system that BG has installed, it will be cost effective and easy for Bradford Council to add to and upgrade it in the future. This will also result in further energy and financial savings."

The council has been impressed by the systems and awarded BG Controls four more upgrade contracts.

News: BG Controls helps Cancer Research UK save money

Rotherham building controls specialist BG Controls is helping Cancer Research UK's Cambridge Research Institute (CRI) to save money that can be more effectively used on core services, by installing a system to monitor the energy consumption of its utilities.

The Institute is housed in the £50m, custom-built Li Ka Shing Centre, located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus at the University. This currently houses 21 cancer research groups and associated core facilities.

Dinnington-based BG Controls has installed an EFT Control System that has sophisticated data collection technology and records and analyses the usage of the gas, electricity and water across the entire site. The collated results are displayed in 15 minute intervals on a PC situated in the Facilities Manager's office.

The Facilities Manager analyses the incoming EFT data and uses this data to help reduce their energy consumption and lower utility costs. Resulting improvements from these recommendations include temperature changes on water chillers, lights are switched off at the end of every day, and staff working out of hours turn off equipment when it is not in use.

Additionally, it has implemented time zones and an optimisation strategy on various items of plant, including the chillers, supply and extract fans, main air handling units and fan coil units.

Due to the execution of these actions, over the past two months the CRI has already managed to save around £8,000 on utility bills and predicts even bigger savings in the future.

Martin Frohock, Building Services & Facilities Manager at Cancer Research UK's Cambridge Research Institute said: "We've only had the system in for a short period of time but we've already seen various reductions in our budgeted utilities bill versus the EFT estimated cost for utilities.

"With the projected savings, this would lead to a payback period of approximately a year for the whole project and we hope to continue making significant savings in the future. This allows us to focus more resources on important research.

"BG's service was excellent throughout the installation. They are a highly competent, knowledgeable team that delivered all requests and adapted to changes in the specification. I look forward to working them in years to come."

BG Controls has also been awarded the service and maintenance contract for the CRI for the next three years.

Award-winning Rotherham building controls expert BG Controls has appointed Ian Ross as the new Operations Manager for the South East.

Ian - aged 41 and from Islington in London has over 15 years of sector experience and joins the leading independent building controls company from NG Bailey.

Prior to this he was at Honeywell Building Solutions - he has held similar managerial roles at both companies.

In his new role, Ian will oversee and ensure efficient delivery of all projects in the BG's growing South East division.

News: BG Controls secures university contract

Rotherham building controls specialist BG Controls has announced that it has been awarded a five-year service and maintenance contract with the University of Lincoln.

BG is currently installing and commissioning an integrated heating and access control system on buildings located on the Brayford Pool campus and on some of the University's satellite sites across the county.

The Dinnington firm has used specialist technology to bring together systems and products across all the buildings to interface in one central system that can be accessed remotely by the facilities manager. BG also remotely monitors the system on a daily basis to diagnose and rectify any potential faults and alleviate responsibility from the on site facilities management team.

The technology also automates innovative air source heat pumps, which heat and cool the interiors of Sparkhouse Studios - the University's start-up business facility - as well as the newly expanded Human Performance Centre.

A new access control system has also been installed in the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre – the University's performance and conference venue. BG is currently in the process of extending this access system to the new Business & Law faculty building.

The building controls specialist specified cost-effective ID cards and readers for both facilities, enabling access privileges to authorised students and staff.

Kevin Forth, facilities manager at the university said: "Integration of the building services and access control systems onto one central platform allows us a better degree of manageability across all the campuses.

"The remote monitoring and ongoing service and maintenance provision also provides us with the reassurance that all the buildings are performing efficiently at all times."

News: BG Controls wins BSF contract

Rotherham building controls specialists BG Controls is helping the Barnsley Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project build green, environmentally friendly schools by installing energy efficient control technologies.

The Dinnington company has been appointed by Crown House Technologies to fit a state-of-the-art building management system (BMS) to control five new Advanced Learning Centres (ALCs) at Dearne, Carlton, Kirk Balk, Penistone and Darton.

Construction began in July 2009 and the new ALCs are set to be completed in January 2011.

The BMS solution includes controls to the biomass boilers, natural ventilation, automatic control of windows and roof vents, rainwater harvesting and wind turbines.

Each school has its own wind turbine to top up the existing power supply. However if the school doesn't use the power this is then exported to the national grid so it's not wasted. The ALCs also have gas-proving systems, which automatically shut down appliances if they are left on thus creating safer conditions.

The system meters water, gas and electricity consumption and each ALC will have a monitor in reception displaying the building's performance where guests, visitors and pupils can view the information.

Rotherham building controls specialist BG Controls has been awarded the title of "Best Service & Maintenance Provider" at this year's Building Controls Industry Awards.


The 2010 event brought together the companies, people and innovations that are achieving the highest professional standards in the building controls industry.

The Dinnington firm demonstrated outstanding levels of care and commitment to its clients in the provision of customer service and maintenance contracts for Building Management Systems.

News: BG Controls helps create a natural environment for entrepreneurs in Rotherham

Leading building controls expert BG Controls is helping the Fusion @ Magna Business Centre in Rotherham to utilise natural energy sources through it's intelligent ventilation system.

The £4.5m centre boasts many green technologies including protective green foliage around the external walls, sedum roof to the workshops and natural ventilation.

BG Controls of Dinnington in Rotherham designed, manufactured and installed a natural ventilation solution for Fusion including sensors monitoring the internal temperature and CO2 levels enabling a comfortable working environment.

With the "living walls" in place the building is protected from the heat of the sun thus lessening the need for air-conditioning with the help of the natural ventilation system.

Based on the former site of Templeborough Rolling Mill steel works, the 2500 sq m centre houses 18 workshops and 29 offices for new start-up businesses.

One of four centres operated by Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RIDO) – the Borough Council's regeneration arm, Fusion was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal earlier this month.
