A state-of-the-art youth hub funded by a multi-million pound Government grant will soon give the young people of Rotherham a place to call their own. An innovative project in Rotherham has been awarded a £3.4m grant from the Department for Children, Schools and Families' myplace programme, administered by the Big Fund. Rotherham myplace is a new build project led by Chantry YMCA. The new youth hub, built on the site of a disused car park within the town centre, will offer a range of facilities for youngsters aged 11-19, including a graffiti art room, IT suite, cinema, performance hall and rooftop café. The project will focus on social enterprise activity and recreational activities. An alternative curriculum will be offered to young people who have been excluded from mainstream schools. Connexions and Rotherham Children, Young People and Families Voluntary Sector Consortium will also provide support on a range of issues such as homelessness, sexual health and drug rehabilitation. Beverley Hughes, Minister for Children and Young People said: "We have put young people at the forefront of the decisions on myplace because they are the best people to design and plan the places their generation and future generations will want to attend and enjoy after school and at weekends. I am especially pleased that the successful projects will be incorporating a range of new digital technologies, cultural, multi-media, performing arts and sporting activities. Gone are the days of youth clubs with dusty halls, where the only activities on offer were pool or table tennis."
