News: Government announces new measures to boost British business

By

A series of new measures to help Britain's small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) grow and create jobs, export to new markets, secure finance and cut red tape has been launched by the Prime Minister.

RBS, NatWest and HSBC have agreed to facilitate the distribution of the £95m of the government's Regional Growth Fund to support SMEs considering investing in new capital assets. It is expected to create at least 4,000 jobs and unlock around £500 million of new investment.

To cut red tape, "one-click registration" will go live in April so that businesses can get online, register their business at Companies House, sign up for PAYE registration, Corporation Tax and Self Assessment all in one place. The ability to register for VAT will be added shortly after.

For exporters, new support involves national challenges and workshops, sector knowledge from business intermediaries and professional export advice, hosted by Yell to allow UK firms to swap information and experiences directly.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: "British SMEs are already doing incredible things, but we urgently need more of them to follow that boldness. We need this to be a country where more people think "I can start my own business and I can sell to the world.

"Our determination is to come through these difficult times stronger, to trade our way to growth and jobs. We need to show real optimism about the future, and we need to show real aggression about pursuing Britain's interests in the world. The markets are there to be tapped; the deals are there to be done, the opportunities are there to be capitalised on. Now together we must seize them."

The national Business Link online service has also been relaunched. My New Business offers comprehensive information and guidance to those looking to start a business, including personalised checklists, video tutorials and step by step guides.

The Growth and Improvement Service offers access to informative videos, case studies, events and business support finders, for those who wish to develop their business.

Business Minister Mark Prisk said: "The Business Link services unveiled today will give businesses new, easy to use, and tailored online services.

"This represents the most effective and efficient way to provide the information and advice businesspeople tell us they need and will help businesses grow.

"Interactive tools and services provide real benefits and support to start-ups and SMEs and I am looking forward to seeing these new services put to good use."

News: Business Link start up workshops

By

A retro sweet shop, a patisserie, and rugby coaching for children were among business plans from entrepreneurs attending a Business Link Yorkshire workshop.

The workshop, "Getting the Basics Right," took place at the end of June at the Ramada Encore Hotel in Barnsley. Part of Business Link Yorkshire's region-wide suite of workshops for people looking to set up a business – or those who have just started trading – it attracted 16 delegates. Several were already trading and on the road to running successful, sustainable businesses, and some had invested significantly in premises and equipment.

Among delegates was a finance director looking to branch out on his own and an education welfare officer wanting "a complete change" - she planned to launch a business in home furnishings and textiles. Others in the group included an NHS podiatrist (a professional in specialised care of feet), and a mum and daughter with a business partnership idea to breed and sell West Highland white terriers.

Business Link Yorkshire adviser Pat Coffey ran the three-hour workshop, offering the delegates a wide range of advice from business planning to legal status and finances. Pat said: "We are careful to encourage people to set up businesses which are sustainable. We sometimes get tradespeople who work for friends at weekends and think they're already running their own business. We have to convince them that setting up a viable business involves far more than doing a job you're good at, and that pricing your time for friend isn't the same as ensuring you’ve covered your overheads and daily expenses."

Workshop delegate Mark Harrison, who is starting a South Yorkshire business coaching children in rugby, added: "With experience of coaching as a volunteer, I have always had a vision of working as coach in some way. After looking at several opportunities, I decided to start my own business and the support from Business Link has definitely given me the confidence and knowledge that it is absolutely the right thing to do. The workshops are a great way to gain valuable information and are delivered in a way that makes it easy to understand.

"The workshop leader was fantastic and made the sessions enjoyable as well as informative and the opportunity to network with other people in a similar position and share their thoughts and ideas was also extremely valuable."

The next Rotherham workshop focuses on getting the basics right and takes place at RiDO's Moorgate Crofts Business Centre on July 12.

News: Business Link continues to support local companies

By

Business Link Yorkshire has seen a rise in demand with businesses looking to gain support before the regional services are replaced by new national arrangements.

A number of the service's free business events have been oversubscribed prompting it to repeat particular events covering sales, marketing and online business development. Simultaneously, calls to the Business Link Yorkshire customer information centre peaked on one day in January at the highest level since summer 2010, with especially strong interest from people looking to start no cost/low-cost businesses from home.

There was further enthusiasm from new visitors to Business Link Yorkshire's improved website. It offers more distinct information for pre start and trading business customers as well as stronger linkages to national site content. To cater for increasing traffic from mobile phones, there is also a new website option giving full screen access from smartphones.

Chief Executive Helen West said the current economic climate and recent VAT increase had put many businesses under pressure, often relating to cash flow and debt management.

She said: "The past year has been extremely difficult for a great number of businesses, in some sectors more than others, and we want to spread the message that, despite a long period of uncertainty, Business Link Yorkshire services are still very much available.

"The customer information centre is available to provide information and access to support on a full range of issues. We have an extensive events programme, adviser teams offering face to face support for established businesses and a full range of pre-start and start-up workshops delivered by our Enterprise Facilitators across the region."

Due to budgetary constraints the services available from April 2011 until it closes in November will be on a much reduced scale.

Business Link Yorkshire said that it would continue to work closely with partners and intermediaries including local authorities, membership organisations, banks and others, ensuring the service addressed local priorities and that there was an effective transition to new arrangements.

News: Government focused on growth and job creation

By

The Government has announced a new business improvement delivery package and the national rollout of the New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) that supports unemployed people in becoming self-employed.

Regional Business Link services will close by the end of the year to be replaced by an improved website and a national contact centre. In October Yorkshire Forward negotiated an extension the Business Link Yorkshire contract after securing approval from the Department of Business Innovation and Skills to provide continued funding beyond March 2011.

The government also set out plans for a network of at least 40,000 experienced business mentors offering practical advice to existing businesses and people who want to start a business and "Business Coaching for Growth" that aims to back high growth SMEs to enable them to realise their potential.

Business and Enterprise Minister Mark Prisk said: "In the current economic climate, it has never been more important to promote an enterprise culture in the UK. It is vital that businesses have the information, advice, and mentoring they need to grow and expand.

"The best people to advise small businesses are those who have already started and run successful companies, so it is particularly important that this new framework for helping businesses to improve focuses on providing access to business mentors."

The New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) aims to create up to 40,000 new businesses by 2013. It will give people who have been unemployed financial support for their early months of self-employment, access to a start-up loan, and an expert business mentor to help guide them through the early months of their business.

In order to claim the allowance they will need to develop a business plan, and secure the agreement of their proposed mentor that it is viable.

Employment Minister Chris Grayling said: "We will only get our economy back on track when we create a climate in which the private sector can grow and develop, creating jobs and opportunities for people across the country.

"By expanding the New Enterprise Allowance we can ensure that those who find themselves out of work but with a good idea get the right advice to turn that idea into a successful business venture."

Prime Minister David Cameron added: "Throughout this year and beyond we will be focused relentlessly on supporting growth and driving job creation across our economy. Backing new enterprises to start up and small businesses to grow will be what transforms our economy and will deliver the many thousands of new jobs we will see created this year.

"It is vital that we ensure businesses, and those people who find themselves out of work but have the drive and desire to set up their own business, have all the advice, support and mentoring they need. Together we can make the years ahead some of the most dynamic and entrepreneurial in our history."

News: Business Link Yorkshire contract

By

Yorkshire Forward is in negotiations to extend the Business Link Yorkshire contract after securing approval from the Department of Business Innovation and Skills to provide continued funding beyond March 2011.

The current contract with Y&H IDB Ltd was due to end on 31 March 2011 but will now be extended for a further period, to bring the service in line with other regions.

In the light of budgetary constraints, the contract extension will see a much reduced service for both start up and established businesses.

In the mean time, Y&H IDB and Yorkshire Forward are finalising the details of the service across the region.

Simon Hill, Executive Director of Business at Yorkshire Forward, said: "We now believe we have secured the best solution available given the difficult times. We are pleased that businesses in the Yorkshire and Humber region will still have access to the excellent service and expertise offered by Business Link Yorkshire.”

Helen West, Chief Executive of Y & H IDB, added: "Whilst we are obviously disappointed that we will be implementing further cuts, we are pleased that the service will continue next year. As always, we remain absolutely committed to delivering the best service we can."

Tony Pedder, Chairman said: "The staff at Business Link Yorkshire have done fantastic work over the past two and a half years – and the quality and impact of the services delivered has increased steadily month on month.

"Their commitment and dedication to our customers has been tremendous – evidenced by a customer satisfaction rating of 90%. As we look to restructure the organisation, we fully appreciate that the next couple of months will be worrying times, but we are committed to supporting our employees through this unsettling process."

News: Philford make the link to business growth

By

Philford Design Engineers of Rotherham are celebrating their thirtieth anniversary this year – and all the indications are that the business looks set for another thirty years of growth and profit.

Philford enjoys a high reputation within the mining and minerals extraction and handling industries and supplies equipment to many of the UK's leading industrial companies – including UK Coal, Drax Power Station, British Waterways and Salt Union.

The business currently enjoys a turnover of around £5 million and employs 44 members of staff, but it is over the past three years that the business has witnessed the most significant growth. That period has seen turnover double and staff numbers rise from 27 to 44.

Throughout their development, Philford has worked with Business Link Yorkshire advisers John Loots and Paul Burton and the company's general manager, Steve Hayes, has no doubt about the importance of the role that Business Link has played.

He said: "We always walk before we run here and look at all aspects before we take decisions and Business Link has helped us to do so. They are experts at what they do and we have used that expertise to our advantage. They have also really helped us to cut down on the time taken to get us to the position we are now in."

The link up has led to the creation of a marketing function, improved tendering, updated quality management systems, specialist staff training and further export opportunities.

Rotherham-based Business Link adviser, Paul Burton says: "Working with Philford has been great – a pleasurable and rewarding experience. Management has always been open to new ideas and has welcomed Business Link into their team in our efforts to help them take the business forward.

"In recent years the business has prospered during a very difficult period for the engineering sector. Philford have an exciting future ahead of them and Business Link Yorkshire look forward to many more years of collaboration to see it achieve even greater success."

News: Rotherham manufacturers urged to make most of business support

By

A specialist taskforce established by Yorkshire Forward to look at how Yorkshire and Humber's manufacturing industry can be supported through the recession has found that many regional companies are missing out on opportunities for support.

The group is Chaired by Richard Wright, CEO of Rotherham based Intertius Ltd and former President of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, and includes representatives from regional companies, Business Link Yorkshire, the Manufacturing Advisory Service and Engineering Employers Federation.

The group has identified that many are missing out on opportunities to access support and are now working to make sure companies understand the best routes to access support and improve their business.

Richard Wright said: "An example would be finance. There are various publicly funded finance schemes available through Business Link Yorkshire but the Banks still remain the major source of short term finance. We know that they are being more challenging to companies who want to borrow; however, one of the many services Yorkshire Forward is funding through Business Link Yorkshire is a free financial health check, which allows a company to look at their financial situation in detail.

"Similarly, there is a huge amount of support available via the Manufacturing Advisory Service around process efficiency and productivity. MAS are also able to provide mentoring support, which can be incredibly helpful for those company leaders for whom this is their first recession."

As well as direct business support, manufacturing companies are also eligible for assistance from Rotherham Council and HMRC via their Business Rates Deferral Scheme, which allows companies to spread payment of their tax or business rates to help alleviate short term cash flow issues.

News: Solutions for business in Rotherham

By

The Department for Business has announced that the design and rollout of Solutions for Business, its streamlined portfolio of business support products, has completed with over 3,000 schemes reduced to 30. For the first time all government help for business now shares an easily identifiable banner and can be accessed through Business Link. From March 2010 these will be the only products businesses will see. Minister for Business, Ian Pearson said: "To succeed in a competitive global environment UK businesses need ongoing access to help and support. The Solutions for Business portfolio makes it simpler for businesses to access the support they need. This is an important tool to help companies through the current global economic downturn, and also for providing a long term, sustainable, support to business." Chair of the Solutions for Business Transition Management Board and Chairman of the Engineering Employers Federation Martin Temple said: "For far too long, help which has been available to business has not been taken up because it has been too complex, confusing to understand and hard to find quickly and easily. This programme will simplify access, make clear what is available and improve the quality in order to match business needs. The benefits of the new system will soon become apparent."
