News: Diamond partnerships extend into new season at Rotherham United

Rotherham United's innovative commercial deal which sees businesses come together as "Diamond Partners" is continuing into the new football season.

Last year the deal enabled the Millers to have the Rotherham Hospice logo proudly emblazoned across the chest. For the the 2024/25 season, the kits will feature another Rotherham charity, Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice.

AESSEAL, Hughie Construction, IPM Group, Mears Group and Steelphalt formed the alliance to become this season’s Diamond Partners and, in turn, provide Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice with the opportunity to be front and centre on the first team kits throughout the upcoming campaign.

Based at North Anston, Bluebell Wood provides care and support to families who have a child who has a life limiting condition and is not expected to live into adulthood.

News: Kit deal supports charity goals for club and business community

In a first for the club, Rotherham United has signed an innovative commercial deal which has seen six businesses come together as "Diamond Partners."

It means that for the 2023/24 Championship season, the Millers will have the Rotherham Hospice logo proudly emblazoned across the chest.

The club hopes that by establishing this Diamond Partnership of businesses that the profile and subsequent fundraising for the Rotherham Hospice not only continues, but accelerates.

The partners are AESSEAL, Equisolve Consulting Ltd, Hughie Construction Ltd, IPM Group, Mears, and Steelphalt.

Rotherham United Commercial Director Steve Coakley said: “For the forthcoming 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship campaign we were determined to look at doing something different, innovative and community-based because we felt that best represented what Rotherham United is all about.

“This unique partnership will be the first of it’s kind in Rotherham United history. It has allowed us as a club to provide a platform for an allegiance of business associates to unite in the name of charity to become our first ever Diamond Partners."

News: Steelphalt secures funding to improve energy efficiency

Rotherham road surface specialist SteelPhalt has secured a share of more than £12m government funding to help energy-intensive industries cut their carbon emissions and energy costs.

The funding for the 22 winning projects will help businesses across England, Wales and Northern Ireland clean up their industrial processes and improve their energy efficiency – benefiting industries including pharmaceuticals, steel, paper, and food and drink.

This £12.4 million funding was awarded as part of the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund (IETF), which has awarded grants to British projects across the country to increase the energy efficiency of their industrial processes, from car manufacturing to steel production and food processing.

SteelPhalt - part of the Harsco group of companies - has been developing and manufacturing high performance asphalt products for the UK road making industry since the 1960s. Harsco has a site at Aldwarke and Steelphalt has an extensive facility at Templeborough.

This energy intensive process of drying, heating, crushing, grinding, conveying currently utilises large volumes of natural gas, gas oil and electricity from the grid, but thanks to government funding, the company is investigating ways to capture the waste heat in the exhaust gases and transform it into electrical power, reducing the fuel demand of the road burners and supporting manufacturing in the local area.

Graham Stuart, Minister at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said: "Boosting the energy efficiency of industrial processes is a critical step not only in our transition to a lower-carbon economy, but also by helping businesses to cut their energy costs and protect valuable British jobs.

"That’s why the government has stepped in once again to support energy intensive industries, with a fresh funding round to unleash the next generation of green innovators who are re-shaping the way technology can reduce carbon emissions."

So far, £34.8 million of funding has been awarded through the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund, which was first launched in June 2020.

A Harsco Metals company spokesperson said: "Harsco has welcomed the IETF grant offer from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to continue its journey to help continue our commitment to innovation and sustainability. With this IETF feasibility funding grant, we have been able to investigate how we can recover heat from our asphalt plant to optimise our use of energy and reduce our carbon footprint."

News: SteelPhalt opens new asphalt plant in Rotherham

Rotherham-based SteelPhalt has opened new asphalt plants for the first time in sixty years.

The new plants, located in Cardiff and an additional plant at the existing Rotherham facility, manufacture sustainable asphalt products using 95% recycled aggregates. This manufacturing process has a carbon footprint that is 40% less than the asphalt manufacturing process that uses natural aggregate.

SteelPhalt - part of the Harsco group of companies - has been developing and manufacturing high performance asphalt products for the UK road making industry since the 1960s. Its extensive Rotherham facility is at Templeborough.

Martin Gray, managing director of SteelPhalt, said: "We are able to provide an innovative approach to quality management of slag by transforming it into a high-quality material that can be used in asphalt products. The new plant in Rotherham will be located on the same site as SteelPhalt’s existing Rotherham plant, which is the busiest independent asphalt plant in the UK. The opening of an additional plant on the site will allow for an increase in service and product offering as demand for more sustainable asphalt products increases.

Gray added: "Opening these additional plants offers Harsco another resource for the handling of slag from our steel mill customers while also responding to the ever-increasing demand to be more sustainable and mindful of our impact in everything we do. News: SteelPhalt restores historic Wentworth Woodhouse driveway

21st Century road surface technology is being used to restore Wentworth Woodhouse to its full glory.

Vital repair work is well underway at the largest privately-owned house in Europe, under the guidance of the owners, the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust (WWPT).

As part of the trust's plans for a major restoration of the site, Rotherham road surface specialists SteelPhalt have given their products, experience and time for free to repair and upgrade the house's grand drive way.

The company is laying its acclaimed SteelSurf product, whose durable properties have proved popular with local authorities for use in high stress locations such as roundabouts and industrial estates.

The project is also being supported by bitumen supplier Total and Rotherham Council's high performing Highway Delivery Service carried out the surfacing work.

Historic England is overseeing spending of a £7.6m grant funding for emergency repairs through its repair grants for heritage at risk but WWPT, estimates it will need up to £200m to restore the historic Grade I listed mansion to its former glory.

News: "Banana" site appeals to Steelphalt

Rotherham-based SteelPhalt, has identified a former colliery site which could contain materials that it could use to create new road surfaces.

SteelPhalt - part of the Harsco group of companies - has been developing and manufacturing high performance asphalt products for the UK road making industry since the 1960s. Harsco has a site at Aldwarke and Steelphalt has an extensive facility at Templeborough.

The firm has been in discussions with Rotherham Council over a parcel of land that the authority owns. Know locally as "Banana Tip" or "Banana Plantation" because of its shape, the land at Infirmary Road borders the Roundwood Golf Club.

Steelphalt wants to undertake exploratory works on the land and the investigations would involve digging some trial pits and sinking two bore holes. The works would take a few days to complete and the land would be fully reinstated afterwards.

Investigations would show whether slag tipped on the land several decades ago could be extracted for use in the road-stone manufacturing plant at Templeborough.

Rotherham Council will shortly be deciding whether to agree to SteelPhalt's request to undertake initial exploratory work, and is therefore asking for residents' views on the plans before works go ahead.

A drop-in session has been arranged at Rawmarsh Joint Service Centre on Wednesday April 11 between 4.00pm and 5.30pm so that residents can view the plans and discuss the proposals.

Damien Wilson, Strategic Director of Regeneration and Environment at Rotherham Council, said: "The Council recognises the value of local green spaces such as this, and remains committed to ensuring residents can continue to access and enjoy them.

"At this stage, Steephalt are simply asking to carry out exploratory works. If we agree to this, and SteelPhalt find that the site is viable, they would then need to provide a full proposal for the Council to consider which would of course need to go through the planning process and obtain the necessary planning permission.

"We are keen to understand local people's views on this so these can be taken into consideration in deciding how to proceed."

Roundwood Colliery was established in the early 1860s. It was bought by John Brown and Company which owned a number of collieries in the area. Having been nationalised, the colliery closed in the early 1960s.

A Rotherham-based business is extending its partnership with Sheffield United Football Club, providing a boost for the development of young players and the fast-emerging Ladies section of the club.

In a three-year deal, SteelPhalt will continue to boast the naming rights of the Championship club's Academy at Shirecliffe and will extend its sponsorship across the United Ladies section of the club, which includes the Regional Training Club, helping develop junior female players.

SteelPhalt has been developing and manufacturing high performance asphalt products for the UK road making industry since 1964, sourcing slag cost-effectively from the surrounding steel industry and providing a sustainable way of making asphalt, with at least 95 per cent of the product the result of the recycling process.

Part of the Harsco Metals Group, the company works in partnership with councils, local authorities and contractors nationwide and is based on Sheffield Road in Templeborough.

United Ladies continue to go from strength to strength and, after winning their league last season, are currently doing well in the FA Premier Women's League Midlands Division.

Meanwhile, United's Academy, widely regarded as the best in the region, has enjoyed great success in recent years. Recognised by the FA Premier League for its ability to provide youngsters with the skills required to forge professional careers, it counts the likes of Premier League players Kyle Walker, Matt Lowton, Harry Maguire, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and most recently, age-group international David Brooks, as graduates.

Rotherham road surface specialist, Steelphalt, has played a key role in laying the foundations for the local community.

The SteelPhalt plant in Sheffield Road, Templeborough - part of the Harsco group of companies - converts steel slag into a surface course for road making.

And when its specialist product, SteelFlow, was being used by Rotherham Council outside the school in Lime Grove, Swinton, pupils had the chance to discover the potential dangers of getting too close to heavy equipment.

Lee Birkbeck, business development manager at Steelphalt, said: "We thought the children might be interested in the resurfacing work that was being carried out on their doorstep but we were overwhelmed by their enthusiasm and their great questions.

"We had around 50 children visit us in total, all keen to learn about the dangers of playing around construction sites, particularly in locations like busy roads.

"They also found out just how specialist steel slag materials can make an enormous difference to road safety.

"And we made sure they all received their own hi-vis jackets so they’ll now also be safer on the roads around the school once the darker winter nights start again."

Across the borough, Steelphalt and its clients, has created a new staff car park at Rotherham Hospice which almost doubles the amount of places available and reduces stress for all.

The new parking area has been created from the garden of neighbouring property, Fox House on Broom Road, which was donated to the the hospice by a supporter many years ago. The building has been used by the Hospice fundraising and admin teams in recent years.

Using land at Fox House was a solution suggested by SteelPhalt boss Martin Lee two years ago. With Hospice Facilities Manager Barry Chilton, he drove a scheme forward and drew in experts from his many business contacts.

CS Surveying, Dinnington, assisted with gaining planning permission and Doncaster company Derek Lewis Ltd prepared the site and ground work. Specialist Surfacing of Scunthorpe provided the labour and machinery for the laying of asphalt donated by SteelPhalt.

Tonnes of stone were donated by Cemex and Matlock based Slinter Mining, soil by AC Aggregates, Maltby, and Hather Plant Hire, Rotherham, provided machinery. Other companies who gave generously were Specialist Surfacing of Scunthorpe, Parkway Sheet Metal, Nynas Bitumen, South Yorkshire Tarmacadam, Everitt Haulage, Attercliffe and Right Mix Concrete, Sheffield.

Aaron Firth, head of fundraising at Rotherham Hospice, said: "This is a shining example of local communities and businesses pulling together to support a local charity. They pitted their time, skills and materials to solve a problem and have saved the hospice tens of thousands of pounds into the bargain.

"We cannot thank them enough for their generosity and hard work, particularly SteelPhalt, who lead the entire project from start to finish. We now have 20 more spaces which will make life so much easier for patients and families visiting loved ones."

News: New manager at SteelPhalt

Rotherham road surface specialist, Steelphalt, has promoted Carl Brown as its new senior operations manager.

SteelPhalt - part of the Harsco group of companies - has been developing and manufacturing high performance asphalt products for the UK road making industry since the 1960s.

Brown, who is 33 and lives in Rotherham, has been with Harsco since leaving the Royal Navy in 2003, working his way up from team leader to management.

He has worked at Harsco sites around the country in many different roles and will now primarily be based at the Harsco Metals site in Aldwarke and at the SteelPhalt site at Templeborough.

Carl Brown, senior operations manager at Steelphalt (pictured), said: "Having worked in many different parts of the Harsco operation, I am very pleased now to be taking on this new challenge."

News: SteelPhalt to begin major car park project for Rotherham Hospice

Rotherham road surface specialist, Steelphalt, is set to begin a major new project to extend parking spaces at the town's hospice.

SteelPhalt is providing asphalt and expertise for the project which is expected to double the amount of spaces for cars at Rotherham Hospice.

And the Templeborough company has also brought in some of its own clients to help bring the project to a successful conclusion.

Dean Raynor, commercial manager at SteelPhalt, said: "The hospice currently has extremely limited parking facilities and this can cause problems at busy times.

"The creation of this new car park, which should double the amount of spaces, should help alleviate some of those those issues.

"We are particularly pleased that we have been supported in this project by Doncaster company Derek Lewis Ltd, who are preparing the site and doing all the ground work such as kerbs and drains, while Specialist Surfacing of Scunthorpre are providing the labour and machinery for the laying of the SteelPhalt asphalt.

"Everybody involved is giving their time and services for free because we know how important the work of the hospice is for the people of Rotherham."

The firm's SteelStop road covering was named Global Slag Product of the Year at the 2016 Global Slag Conference and Exhibition in London.

He said: "Their kindness is saving the hospice a considerable sum and the project will make a huge improvement to our car park. It is doubling the amount of spaces, which will benefit patients and families."

He also assured the work was being carefully planned to ensure only minimal disruption for hospice visitors.

The project is set to begin in early April and is expected to be finished within 12 weeks.

The charity needs £5m a year with half of that needed to be raised each year through voluntary support.

Rotherham road surface specialist, Steelphalt, has won a major national award for one of its most important products.

SteelPhalt - part of the Harsco group of companies - has been developing and manufacturing high performance asphalt products for the UK road making industry since the 1960s.

And its SteelStop road covering was named Global Slag Product of the Year at the recent 2016 Global Slag Conference and Exhibition in London.

Designed in conjunction with the Ulster University and tested at trial sites across Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster, SteelStop high friction surfacing was developed to help put the brakes on traffic in busy or skid prone areas, providing extra grip for road users and safety benefits for pedestrians.

SteelPhalt surfaces, which are used across the region, uses steel slag, which is a co-product of the steelmaking process, and have a high skid resistance and are also a key tool in increasing road safety in busy areas like the roads around schools and other high traffic volume sites.

News: SteelPhalt launch centre of excellence

Rotherham road surface specialist, Steelphalt, is taking its expertise worldwide with the launch of its new centre of excellence.

SteelPhalt has been developing and manufacturing high performance asphalt products for the UK road making industry since 1964, sourcing slag cost-effectively from the surrounding steel industry and providing a sustainable way of making asphalt, with at least 95% of the product the result of the recycling process.

The SteelPhalt Development Centre, based at the company's headquarters at Templeborough, is now analysing slag samples from around the world and creating new ways to take that raw material and transform it into safer road surfaces.

At the moment the team is working with companies as far afield as China, Australia, Brazil, India, Portugal and Belgium, with many other countries already expressing an interest in working with the SteelPhalt team.

Part of the Harsco group of companies, SteelPhalt has invested more than £100,000 in the project, which currently employs a specialist team of four and is expected to create more jobs as the centre’s reputation for excellence grows.

Dean Raynor, Commercial Manager at SteelPhalt, said: "We have installed the latest steam expansion tester which allows us to investigate slag samples for expansivity, but also have the capabilities to measure performance of skid resistance, strength, abrasiveness and absorbency, all the areas that go into making safer roads.

"From there we can then design create new mixes to suit the specific needs of the countries we are working with.

"For a country like China, with its massive industrial complexes, there are hundreds of tons of slag being generated and with our support some of that will go into created safer road surfaces.

"It is an environmentally friendly and cost efficient way of creating safer driving conditions and after more than 50 years of growth, SteelPhalt is deemed the world expert in the creation of asphalts for all road surfaces."

The company, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, has invested in laboratory facilities, a learning hub and new offices in recent years.

Rotherham road surface specialist, Steelphalt is paving the way for future football stars by becoming the new naming rights sponsor of Sheffield United's highly regarded Academy.

Part of the Harsco Metals Group, the company works in partnership with councils, local authorities and contractors nationwide to "deliver durable roads for a sustainable world."

SteelPhalt, which employs more than 50 people, supplies 20% of Yorkshire's demand for asphalt from its site at Templeborough.

The three year long six figure sponsorship will see the facility renamed the SteelPhalt Sheffield United FC Academy. Former sponsors Redtooth will continue its association with the League One club under a new commercial partnership which will be announced over the coming months.

Current first team squad members Louis Reed and George Long have gained international age group honours.

From its plant at Templeborough, SteelPhalt specialises in the conversion of steel slag into a surface course for road making. The new DAF trucks – all fully branded with the SteelPhalt logo and colours – will be delivering the company's highly acclaimed road surface coverings around the region.

They also include the latest trackers, meaning deliveries can be much more closely monitored, improving time management for both the company and the client.

And the new lorries feature the latest fuel-efficient technology, improving transport costs, while lower emissions make the vehicles more environment friendly.

Ian Bunce, transport manager at SteelPhalt, said: "The new lorries are designed to keep our asphalt material warm, meaning it is in the same excellent condition when it reaches the site that it was when it left us.

"This represents a £500,000 investment for us and it is something we are extremely proud of.

"As we enter a new year we are delighted that these new lorries will be helping extend the SteelPhalt name even further."

News: SteelPhalt cyclists fighting cancer

A trio of friends from Rotherham road surface specialists, SteelPhalt, have taken part in a special Tour de France cycle challenge to raise money for a cancer charity.

Paul Monson, Dan Rogers and Lee Burgdol were among the competitors taking part in a 122 mile Grand Depart trek from Leeds to Harrogate in support of top charity Cyclists Fighting Cancer, the organisation that enables children and young people living with cancer to regain their physical fitness, strength and confidence by giving them new bikes, adapted trikes, tandems, other equipment and support.

And as SteelPhalt is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, the company decided to give the friends a £1,000 boost to their bike riding efforts.

Paul Monson, weigh bridge operator at Steelphalt, said: "It was a tough challenge. The route took us through some spectacular scenery but it was also a very challenging course and it took us around nine hours to complete.

"It's great to know that SteelPhalt have decided to give us a £1,000 boost too because this is a great charity and it makes all our effort seem that much more worthwhile."

News: SteelPhalt completes £2m Rotherham contract

Rotherham road surface specialist Steelphalt has completed work on a £2m contract to provide a new surface for the town's historic canal towpath.

From its plant at Templeborough, SteelPhalt specialises in the conversion of steel slag into a surface course for road making.

The waterway, which threads through the industrial heart of Rotherham to join the national canal network at Tinsley, is a popular route for walkers and cyclists, who will benefit from the improvements to the towpath completed by Rotherham Council and the Canal Board.

SteelPhalt provided its unique ColdBit recycled base course for the teams laying the new surface.

ColdBit, produced from recycled asphalt planings and complying fully with the requirements of Environment Agenda 21, was chosen because it proved easier and safer for contractors to move to the towpath site and also has the advantage of being a more environmentally friendly material.

Dean Raymnor, commercial manager at SteelPhalt, said: "Unlike hot mix basecourse materials, ColdBit does not become unusable when cold and therefore all the material is utilised, with no waste generated.

"ColdBit is easier and quicker to lay than hot mix materials and can be laid either by paver or by hand. And since there is no heat involved in laying the product, the risk of burns and fume inhalation is eliminated.

"Also, using recycled asphalt preserves the natural environment by conserving energy and reducing transportation, with Hot Plant emissions avoided altogether along with the need to quarry and landfill."

News: New lab for SteelPhalt

Road surface specialist Steelphalt has continued to invest in new facilities at its Rotherham site.

Specialising in the conversion of steel slag into a surface course for road making, the company is marking the start of its 50th anniversary year with a £40,000 investment in an expanded laboratory and learning centre at its Sheffield Road site at Templeborough.

The newly extended and improved laboratory facility will give the opportunity for increased research and development work and also for even higher levels of product screening and quality assurance.

At the same time, the company has also invested in an extension of its central learning hub.

Martin Gray, senior operations manager at Steelphalt, said: "We are now bringing in people from as far afield as Glasgow and South Wales for vital training in industry best practice as well as support and development.

"This amount of investment in both the laboratory and the learning hub really does make our site a centre of excellence for hot work, building on the company's vast pool of expertise and experience."

The new facility follows on from investment last year in new purpose built offices to bring together departments on the Templeborough site.

The move brings together for the first time departments that have previously been at different locations around the company's Sheffield Road site at Templeborough.

News: Harsco launches 2013 apprentice search

Rotherham based Harsco Metals and Minerals has launched its 2013 search for six new apprentices.

The supplier of environmental and logistical solutions to industry operates the Steelphalt site at Templeborough, and began its apprenticeship programme eight years ago.

And it is now firmly established as a key developer of the next generation of mechanical, electrical, fabrication and welding skills.

Andrew Needham, business manager at Harsco's Rotherham plant, said: "I myself come from an apprenticeship background so I know all about the full benefits of this sort of scheme.

"Industry always needs good practical people and an apprenticeship can give those people an early opportunity to shine.

"A purely academic background does not always provide the skills that we require in this business and with such a limited supply available we decided to create those skills for ourselves.

"We want and need to attract young people into the business because they are the future of the business."

The Harsco scheme is a four-year apprenticeship, combining on site experience and college day release, with the opportunity to work not only in Rotherham but also at other Harsco sites across the country.

At the end of the apprenticeship there is then the chance to embark on a fifth learner year under the guidance and mentorship of a maintenance supervisor

Andrew added: "We have very strong ties but with local colleges and also centres like Sheffield Hallam University, taking our apprentices to higher levels of learning and development.

"The opportunities are absolutely immense for anybody who wants to put in the effort and learn through experience and education."
