News: Dearne Valley College celebrates National Apprenticeship Week

By

Dearne Valley College in Rotherham has hosted a number of events this week to highlight apprenticeships as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

The week includes a myth-busting "speed dating event", and a glitzy awards ceremony presented by key staff at the College, and local MP, John Healey. The College will also be displaying Apprenticeship case studies throughout the Manvers campus showcasing the successes and achievements made by former Dearne Valley College Apprentices.

The speed dating event on Tuesday saw employers from a range of businesses, who currently employ Apprentices from Dearne Valley College, provide a wealth of information and dispel common errors in knowledge regarding Apprenticeships. These include practical issues such as national minimum apprenticeship wage and progression routes following an Apprenticeship, to the everyday details such as weekly work load and expected College hours.

Representatives from Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, the Citizens Advice Bureau, Ramada Hotel in Doncaster and local day care centre, Little Einsteins will be on hand to deliver the sessions, among many others.

Thursday's awards celebrated the achievements made by the College's Apprentices, and the employers they work with. Local MP, John Healey, who presented the awards, also gave a speech on working with Dearne Valley College throughout his own Apprenticeship recruitment process.

Kaye Jackson, business development manager at Dearne Valley College, said: "National Apprenticeship Week is a fantastic opportunity to showcase and celebrate our hardworking Apprentices, and the employers that support them to achieve their career goals by allowing them to be part of their businesses.

"It is also an ideal time to promote progression to an Apprenticeship, for our mainstream learners, highlighting the ethos and advantage of both working and learning – What could be better. To achieve this, we like to involve local employers with events such as these, to share their experiences of what an Apprenticeship can do for both an individual's career and also for the business they work in."
