Rotherham manufacturer, CMD, has launched Miro, an innovative, dynamic monitor arm made in the UK. It has already received the prestigious Red Dot award for product design.

News: CMD acquired again

Rotherham manufacturing firm, CMD Ltd, has been acquired by another manufacturer, Luceco plc, two years after it was bought by industrial private equity investor, Rubicon Partners.

Eastwood-based CMD is a designer and manufacturer of power distribution and ergonomic solutions in the workplace and makes products such as workstation hardware and power track systems for use in the commercial office, retail and hospitality sectors. The company employs 158 people and has been a market leader of award-winning products and services since 1988.

Rubicon has already bought and sold CMD, a company it first acquired in 2000. CMD was the subject of a management buyout in 2008 and was acquired by American firm, IDEAL Industries Inc., in 2017.

Luceco plc is a supplier of wiring accessories, EV chargers, LED lighting, and portable power products and has its UK manufacturing and distribution centre in Telford.

The acquisition of CMD comes with the purchases of its ultimate parent company, Baltic Topco Limited, from Rubicon Partners and management for cash consideration of £30m, on a cash and debt-free basis.

It was confirmed that CMD has an experienced senior management team which will remain with the business, continuing to operate from its headquarters in Rotherham.

For the audited 12-month period ended 31 December 2023 CMD reported revenue of £23.1m and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of £4.0m. Luceco said that the acquisition is expected to be earnings enhancing in its first full year of ownership.

Rotherham manufacturing firm, CMD Ltd, has been acquired by industrial private equity investor, Rubicon Partners, for an undisclosed sum.

Eastwood-based CMD is a designer and manufacturer of power distribution and ergonomic solutions in the workplace and makes products such as workstation hardware and power track systems for use in the commercial office, retail and hospitality sectors. The company employs 158 people and has been a market leader of award-winning products and services since 1988.

The deal sees Rubicon return to CMD, a company it first acquired in 2000. CMD was the subject of a management buyout in 2008 and was acquired by American firm, IDEAL Industries Inc., in 2017. CMD posted a turnover of £20m for 2021.

RSM’s M&A and due diligence team supported the preparation of the carve out financials and a financial factbook, identified suitable purchasers, negotiated all aspects of the deal and project managed to completion on behalf of IDEAL. The transaction was led by corporate finance partner Helen Brocklebank, with support from Davin Kandola, Louise Berrie and James Smith; while Phil Parkes, Thomas Sinden and Jake Mallet provided due diligence advice.

The disposal of a non-core business by IDEAL enables the company to focus on its key markets of professional electrician products, high power density connectors and charging systems.

News: Multimillion pound property deals done

A number of commercial properties in Rotherham have been sold as part of multimillion pound property deals.

At Eastwood, manufacturing firm CMD Ltd has acquired the building it occupies from property firm, St. Mowden, which itself bought the site in 2010. CMD will continue to use the 17,701 sq ft building as its headquarters.

Acquired last year by US firm, IDEAL INDUSTRIES, INC, the innovative company integrates power and technology with furniture and has a product range offering underfloor power systems, lighting and power busbars, lighting control systems, together with office power, cable management and ergonomic solutions.

St. Mowden also sold its Claywheels Lane Business Park in Sheffield, with the separate deals being for in excess of £3.3m.

Paul Brustad, asset manager at St. Modwen, said: "The successful sale of Claywheels Lane and Sycamore Court is testament to our investment and hard work in transforming commercial properties. The future looks bright for these sites and we wish the new owners all the best. Their disposal is in line with St. Modwen's strategic objectives and we will continue to bring similar properties to the market in order to support investment into larger commercial developments in the region."

A range of Rotherham properties have changed hands as Network Space's 630,000 sq ft Network North portfolio was acquired by investment firm, Columbia Threadneedle in a £41.9m deal.

Formerly Langtree, the rebranded Network Space was established in 1982 and directly owns and manages an investment portfolio of over 3 million sq ft of modern industrial and office developments across 60 locations with a combined value of over £130m, the majority of which has been self-developed.

The advertised portfolio includes Units 1 & 3, Eden Close, Hellaby. The 16,191 sq ft Unit 1 is occupied by Pearson Education Limited (pictured).

Also in the portfolio is Sheaf House, on Bradmarsh Business Park in Templeborough which is the 36,000 sq ft headquarters of specialist healthcare equipment distributors Harvest Healthcare Limited.

The third Rotherham property in the portfolio is Unit 6 at Farfield Park, Manvers. Currently undergoing refurbishment, the 21,072 sq ft building was previously occupied by Purex.

News: Jobs boost as Sheffield city region attracts foreign investment

Nearly 60% of all new jobs created by foreign investment in Yorkshire and the Humber last year came into the Sheffield City Region (SCR).

New figures from the Department for International Trade show that foreign investment into the SCR leapt by a massive 73% in the financial year to the end of March 2017 compared to previous 12 months.

This makes it the most successful year for international investment in the region since the SCR was created.

The Government figures, produced annually, show that there were 46 investments by foreign businesses, creating 2,308 new jobs and safeguarding another 217. Another five projects were UK-wide investments at multiple sites and the Department could not give the numbers of jobs created by region.

The successes are broken down into expansions which comprise 47% of the investment; mergers and acquisitions make up another 18%; and new investments 36%.

Yorkshire and The Humber recorded 132 investments, creating 3,872 new jobs and safeguarding another 1,079.

The latest Government figures back up the picture painted by figures released earlier this year, compiled by the SCR, which represented the most successful year for foreign investment into the region since the SCR was established six years ago to drive economic growth and jobs.

In the Sheffield City Region, the key automotive sector attracted six projects; metals, minerals and materials five; and advanced engineering four.

Teams from the regeneration departments of the nine local authorities are supported by the region-wide SCR Trade and Investment team to work together to attract foreign companies from overseas, and others already based in the UK looking to relocate and expand.

Rachel Clark, director of trade and investment for the SCR, said: "These excellent figures are the exciting result of collaborative work with our local authority and business partners and the Department for International Trade. It's rewarding to see a team effort bringing in such fantastic returns in terms of jobs and economic growth."

Headline-grabbing investments include Amazon's fourth warehouse in Doncaster – the largest number it has in any one place in the UK, and the announcement of the creation of high-value jobs by supercar manufacturer, McLaren Automotive, and US aero giant, Boeing.

Recent foreign investments relating to Rotherham include the £330m deal that saw ENGIE, a French headquartered multinational firm that specialises in electricity generation and renewable energy, acquire Keepmoat's Regeneration division which includes a significant operation in Rotherham.

Earlier in the period, one of Rotherham's manufacturing success stories, Pyronix, was acquired by China's Hikvision, the world's largest supplier of video surveillance products and solutions.

In January, Rotherham manufacturing firm CMD Ltd was acquired by US firm, IDEAL INDUSTRIES, INC. for an undisclosed sum. In November, Rotherham's Envelopemaster was taken over by a rapidly expanding division of a German industrial firm, VP Group.

Last August, the global aerospace and defence company, General Dynamics, took on new office space in Rotherham for its UK-based IT business.

Also during the period, GLASSOLUTIONS, part of French multinational Saint-Gobain announced that it is restructuring its contracting business that is centrally based in Rotherham, confirming an investment of £5m and a restructure of its operating model.

News: Celebrations continue at CMD

Rotherham manufacturing firm CMD Ltd has taken the opportunity to recognise the achievements of some of their longest serving members of staff as part of its 30th Anniversary celebrations.

Based at Eastwood, the office solutions company has a product range offering underfloor power systems, lighting and power busbars, lighting control systems, together with office power, cable management and ergonomic solutions.

Between them, six members of the CMD workforce have clocked up 124 years of service.

Peter Rodgers is the longest serving member of the team, looking forward to completing 25 years with CMD by the end of this year.

But not far behind him are Mark Windle with 23 years, Claire Scattergood with 21 years, Mandy Bulcroft with 19 years,Steve Robinson with 18 years and Margaret Timmings, also with 18 years.

Peter, who is an electrical operative at CMD, said: "I've seen a lot of changes in that time.

"The company has grown enormously in the time I have been here and I suppose it is nice to think that I've been part of that."

Huthwaite International, the world's leading company in behaviour change for salespeople and negotiators, is also recognised by Plimsoll. The Wentworth company is a market leading behaviour change consultancy and specialises in consulting and training on all aspects of sales. It works with major blue chip companies across the world including Rezidor, Dell, Motorola, UPS and Zurich Insurance.

Huthwaite International's revenue from non-UK business grew from £3.8m in 2010/11 to £5.7m in 2012/13 and exports are now 76.6% of Huthwaite's turnover.

Also on the list is Exol Lubricants, the largest independent lubricants company in the UK. Based in the West Midlands, its large blending plant at Northfield has recently expanded. Exol has successfully grown its export business throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, appointing strategic partners in various countries.

Acorn Industrial Services Ltd has also been recognised in the year that it completed a £1.25m investment in new premises in Hellaby. The firm is one of the largest power transmission distributors in the country and supplies bearings, power transmissions and linear systems to a global customer base.

With new premises twice the size of the previous sites combined, and more than capable of housing the company's £4m worth of stock alongside all head office functions, the firm has recently significantly extended its range of power transmission products with the launch of a brand new coupling division.

Rotherham manufacturing firm CMD Ltd is expanding at home as it also looks to expand abroad.

CMD is expanding its operations by bringing Preston based technical and sales staff to its head office in Rotherham.

CMD integrated its manufacturing and warehousing operation over 18 months ago and by bringing the complete technical and sales teams under one roof, the company will now offer a fully streamlined service from one location.

The move is part of a wider plan for growth as CMD Ltd plans to expand globally. Former head of sales, Andy Pearson has made the move to head of export and will focus on expanding CMD Ltd's reach across the globe. Andy has been part of the CMD Ltd team for three and a half years and prior to this he spent over 16 years at Legrand, a leading French manufacturer and a key competitor for CMD. Jon Holding will take up the position of head of sales, Jon has returned to CMD after a briefly exploring other opportunities, and had previously worked for the company for nine years.

These changes indicate exciting times at CMD Ltd and the move and team expansion reinforces the company's 2013/14 business plan of "one strategy, one brand, one business, one operational base with one prestigious London showroom."

News: CMD launch Ergonomics in Education campaign

Innovative Rotherham manufacturing company, CMD Ltd, are taking ergonomic equipment and advice to schools in a bid to help improve the health and well being of children in the classroom.

This autumn, CMD will reach out to over 3,500 schools to educate school leaders about the benefits of good ergonomics in classrooms, including offering advice on better posture and suggesting specialist ergonomic equipment to streamline classrooms.

According to the British Chiropractic Association nearly half of children under 11 have suffered from some kind of back pain. Much of this pain is caused by a combination of poor classroom ergonomics, children carrying heavy bags to school and young people not getting enough exercise.

CMD aim to educate schools on the importance of ergonomics and ease the pressure on young people's backs by providing schools with information on the key equipment needed for an ergonomic classroom.

Inexpensive and easy to install products such as monitor arms, tablet supports and laptop supports enable teachers and pupils to maintain a good posture in classrooms while they work. Ergonomic equipment such as this, as well as CPU units and cable ties, make classrooms tidier, safer and healthier places to be.

CMD Ltd has received a glowing report after the Rotherham based manufacturer surveyed over 400 of its customers and asked them to rate the company's customer service levels.

The survey revealed that the top three values most important to CMD's customers are the company's approachability; product and service quality and that CMD are British manufacturers. The survey was not just an opportunity for CMD to ask their customers how well the company was serving them, it was also a chance for CMD to spot areas which require improvement and to avoid the common trap of complacency which many companies fall into.

As well as asking customers about their thoughts on its services, CMD also asked its customers what they thought about the products the company produces, and asked for suggestions for improvement. This information will enable CMD to review its current product range and look at developing future products which will be designed with customer feedback in mind.

Innovative manufacturing company, CMD Ltd, has appointed Chris Birch as the new head of Manufacturing and Logistics.

Chris will be responsible for the product manufacturing and warehouse operation at CMD and joins from The Manitowoc Company, where he was manufacturing and continuous improvement manager for nearly nine years. Previous to this, Chris worked for automotive carpet manufacturer Rieter.

Established in 1984, CMD underwent a management buyout in June 2008 and still strongly believe in the benefits and traditions of British manufacturing. For example, 95% of the parts used in the making of the Air and Motion Arms, the lightweight monitor arms, are sourced in the UK, with 80% sourced locally.

Chris (pictured) said: "I chose to join CMD as they are an established company with great potential for improvements and growth in the future. I have always enjoyed a challenge and CMD will provide me the perfect platform to build on the already successful business.

"There is a really good feel about the place as CMD is a company which is willing to embrace change and move the business forward."

As head of Manufacturing and Logistics, Chris will lead a team of over 100 people into lean manufacturing, with the ultimate aim of having a world class manufacturing and logistics facility at the company's Head Office Site in Rotherham.

Manufacturing company, CMD Ltd no longer sends any waste to landfill at its head office site in Rotherham, following the implementation of a new Integrated Waste Management service delivered by Biffa, the specialist waste management company.

Based at Eastwood, the company is a specialist in innovative office products including underfloor power systems, lighting and power busbars, lighting control systems, together with office power, cable management and ergonomic solutions.

All of its waste is now sent for recycling.

Graham Gillott, quality manager at CMD Ltd, said: "It is encouraging to see businesses like ourselves working effectively with Biffa to achieve this industry leading target of zero waste to landfill.

"As well as demonstrating the importance of environmental responsibility, implementing more effective recycling services to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill makes good business sense: landfill tax costs continue to rise and increasingly, collection contracts such as this will be the most economic way for businesses of all sizes to deal with recycling as well as general waste. This news is a tremendous achievement for us and demonstrates our commitment to cut carbon emissions across our business.

"All recycled waste is collected by Biffa and rebates are received for recyclable materials, which substantially reduces our costs. Biffa worked with us to implement new recycling systems, introducing a Dry Mixed Recycling (DMR) service for materials like plastic bottles, paper and cans as well as general waste recycling services."

Rotherham manufacturing company, CMD Ltd, has been awarded the prestigious Made in Sheffield status for their innovative office products.

Based at Eastwood, the company has a product range offering underfloor power systems, lighting and power busbars, lighting control systems, together with office power, cable management and ergonomic solutions.

CMD can apply as it holds a Sheffield "S" postcode but in order to be awarded the mark, a company must first demonstrate their commitment to producing high-quality products.

CMD's new Air and Motion screen arms have been recognised with the Made in Sheffield mark. Designed, precision engineered and manufactured in the UK, the new flat screen monitor stands are lightweight, streamlined and designed with both practicality and aesthetic appeal in mind.

News: Rotherham firm wired for further growth

The Star reports on the management buyout at Rotherham firm, CMD Ltd. The firm was created last year by the merger of two companies, Rotherham based DPG/Form Fittings, which was founded 20 years ago, and Preston based Powerplan and is a UK specialist in under floor wiring and power cable management. RBS, Grant Thornton, DLA Piper, PriceWaterhouseCooper and Hammonds all helped the buyout go through. CMD's managing director, Steve Cole told The Star that the buyout was the opportunity to: "take the company forward to the next stage supported by a clear strategy and our commitment to developing new products, leading technology and world class logistics. "We have a great team who is dedicated to the business and will keep us at the forefront of the industry. We remain very optimistic for the future of CMD and look forward to strengthening our working relationship with RBS."
