News: MTL sees exports double to over £7m

By

Manufacturing specialist, MTL Group, has almost doubled its export sales to £7.3m since moving to a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Rotherham last year.

MTL Group is one of Europe's fastest growing project manufacturing specialists in the metal sector and is a global supplier of secondary steelwork.

It works with a global blue-chip customer base in the defence, construction equipment, rail and off-shore wind energy sectors.

Founded in 1995, MTL Group processes around 30,000 tonnes of material annually and provides a range of services from laser cutting and machining to press braking and surface treatment. They underwent a management buyout in 2006 and has doubled its turnover in the last five years to £50m.

The company moved into a £5m, 300,00sq ft state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Brinsworth last year and has invested £1m in new machinery.

The investment has enabled MTL Group to become a specialist in volume manufacturing, enabling it to make a vigorous move into exports which have risen from less than 1% of the group's turnover to 22% with products now being shipped around the world to mainland Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North America and India. The company has also seized the opportunity to move into the flourishing offshore wind energy market.

David O’Hara, group finance director at MTL Group, said: "We have established a worldwide reputation as a specialist processor with the capability to cut, bend, machine and fabricate steel to customers’ specific requirements. This expertise is increasingly being sought by overseas customers with exports growing to almost a quarter of our turnover.

"Last year, we were awarded our largest ever export to supply 97 boat landing systems to a leading European foundations manufacturer, for a German offshore wind farm. Since then, our export success in the offshore wind market has continued as we have secured several multimillion pound export orders to supply boat landings for the Borkum West and Meerwind offshore wind farms in the North Sea."

MTL's Rotherham facility boasts the largest laser in the UK and a 640-tonne robotic press, which is the biggest of its kind anywhere in the world.

A new high definition bevel plasma cutter and a robotic tube cutter are also in place, both specially designed to support the growth in orders from the offshore renewable energy sector.

David continued: "Having made a significant investment in larger, more efficient manufacturing facilities and also in training our workforce to the highest level of competency, we have been able to meet this demand from overseas and also to explore new sectors such as offshore wind farms. As an expanding business in an expanding sector, we have a very positive outlook and plan to further develop our export business with significant work from Europe, the Middle East and South Africa.

"South Yorkshire has been a great base from which to build our global business, benefitting from a highly skilled workforce, a solid base of sub contractors and good support from Rotherham's inward development organisation."

Peter Edwards, director at Grant Thornton in Sheffield, the firm's auditors and advisers, added: "It's fantastic to see businesses like MTL Group keeping South Yorkshire's manufacturing expertise on the world map. It's a great example of a forward-looking British firm that has not only exploited opportunities in new markets by establishing a successful export business, but has also been swift-footed and targeted emerging sectors such as the fast-growing offshore renewables industry."

News: Dormer export specialist lands diploma

By

An international business specialist at Dormer Tools in Rotherham has passed a diploma with flying colours – after doing most of his studying on aeroplanes.

John Eustace, regional business area manager with Dormer Tools International on the Advanced Manufacturing Park, has been awarded the Institute of Export's Diploma in International Trade (DIT) to add to his Advanced Certificate in International Trade (ACIT).

He studied four subjects over three years for the diploma and in one of them, Management of International Trade, scored the highest marks in the country. John received the Diploma at the Mansion House in London, home of the Lord Mayor of London.

John, who has worked for Dormer for 23 years, said: "It's been hard work finding the time to study and a lot of the work has been done on aeroplanes while travelling to visit customers in different parts of the world.

"The course takes you through all aspects of international trade from indirect exporting to wholly owned subsidiaries and gives real-life scenarios that call for decisions to be made, so it's been really useful in my day-to-day work.

"It also brings enormous confidence to know you have the knowledge to fall back on. Much of the course is about developing new business in virgin markets and that has proved to be very helpful.

"Dormer's international business continues to go from strength to strength and I am sure that the ACIT and DIT have been significant factors in our success."

The course was funded by Dormer and its parent company, Swedish-based Sandvik Group.

Lesley Batchelor, Institute of Export director general, added: "John's achievement is well deserved and reflects the accessibility and flexibility of the Institute's distance learning packages and the expert support from our tutors."

Dormer Tools International sells more items than any other Dormer Tools location around the world, apart from the United States, and makes up a fifth in quantity of the group's overall global sales. They have more than 250 active distributors in more than 40 markets around the world.

Last year they placed more emphasis on delivering bigger volumes of its general purpose, solid carbide and high speed steel cutting tools to distributors, particularly across the Far East.

News: Recognition for Rotherham regeneration project

By

The regeneration of Dinnington colliery in Rotherham has made it into a Top 100 list put together by a leading industry magazine.

The Top 100 Regeneration Projects 2012 includes development schemes in the UK that are receiving over £10 billion of investment. They are separated from straight property development by having input from the public sector or public investment.

The £123m Dinnington project centres on the industrial-led regeneration of the former colliery. The whole site has been successfully reclaimed and the first phase of development has been completed with over 40,000 sq m of employment space created.

Work began in 2000 on the £14m reclamation project which saw the 85 hectare site eventually developed to provide ares for industrial, business and mixed use and large areas of Urban Green Space. The site reclamation won prestigious national environment awards for the way bioremediation was used to clean 30,000 cubic metres of contaminated soil.

The Dinnington Business Park has transformed the area into an established business location. Inward investors include Johnston Press, who invested £60m in a state of the art printing facility (pictured, above).

Leading companies on the park include construction experts, Macalloy; Assured Fire and Security; Marussia Manor Racing; and innovative security company, Connexion2.

The site is also home to the Matrix @ Dinnington business centre (pictured, right). Operated by Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RIDO), the regeneration arm of Rotherham Council, the £3.4m incubation centre provides high quality office and workshop facilities, ideal for start-up businesses.

The sinking of Dinnington Colliery began in 1902 and coal started to be raised in 1905. By 1911 the colliery was providing employment for 2,000 people. It closed in 1992 resulting in 1,000 job losses.

The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the national housing and regeneration agency for England, which owns the site, estimates that 620 jobs have been created so far and expects 2,408 jobs to be created as the scheme progresses.

To move the scheme forward, the HCA recently put 17.86 hectares at Dinnington up for sale for commercial use under their property and regeneration programme. They expected the fully services plots to be sold during the first quarter of this year.

Pat Ritchie, chief executive of the HCA, said: "As this year's Top 100 demonstrates, regeneration delivery across the country is still strong and there are still resources to be tapped and different approaches to be taken.

"But we mustn't underestimate the challenges of continuing this success – a lot less funding from the public and private sector against a backdrop of continuing challenging economic conditions which is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

"Our best response will be a flexible approach through a mix of grant, investment, and the maximum use of public assets, while working with local authorities and other public and private sector partners. It is this locally led and integrated approach which will best use scare resources and capacity against agreed local priorities."

News: Manufacturers in Yorkshire and Humber are increasing sales, creating jobs and investing more

By

Manufacturing SMEs in Yorkshire and Humber are bucking sluggish growth forecasts with encouraging reports of increased sales and new jobs.

Yesterday, the CBI reported on the national picture where UK manufacturers reported weaker order books in May, and the pace of expected output growth over the next three months has slowed.

However, more than half of local respondents (53%) to the first ever Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) National Barometer had seen turnover rise in the last six months, with 61% expecting further growth between now and the end of the year.

The quarterly survey also revealed that 49% of companies are planning to take on staff in the coming year with another 41% expecting employee numbers to remain the same, as the level of new business enquiries holds strong despite difficult economic conditions.

Martin Coats, Area Director at MAS, said: "This is the clearest indication yet that our manufacturers are enjoying increases in sales and, reassuringly, they expect this trend to continue.

"Investment by the major Original Equipment Manufacturers and interest from overseas companies to source from England has helped facilitate demand.

"The Barometer includes the views of manufacturers from all sectors and, against the backdrop of improvements in turnover, is showing a renewed commitment to create new jobs.

"It will be interesting to see if employers can find the skilled staff they require to fill the positions, bringing into focus the need for companies to create and support Apprenticeships so we can start to fill the talent pipeline again."

The MAS National Barometer has been based on the successful model conducted in the South West for the last three years. It predominantly provides a snapshot of trends in English manufacturing SMEs, as well as an overview of economic conditions and issues faced by the sector.

The report revealed that 49% of companies in Yorkshire and Humber are planning to increase spend on premises and machinery, whilst 37% plan to invest in developing new technology which will help them to remain ahead of global competition.

It appears that the MAS message of continuous improvement is also being understood, with more than 82% of firms admitting they would secure business growth through making improvements in operational efficiency.

MAS is funded by the government and is available to all manufacturing businesses across England. It is delivered by the Manufacturing Advisory Consortium (MAC), which is comprised of Grant Thornton, Pera, WM Manufacturing Consortium Ltd and SWMAS Ltd.

News: Rotherham selects masterpiece for Gallery Town

By

A masterpiece by French Post-Impressionist painter, Georges Seurat, will be the stand out piece in the new collection at Rotherham’s open air gallery.

Visitors and residents were asked to choose which one of five world renowned artwork pieces they would like to see feature most prominently in the next phase of the Gallery Town project.

Ballot boxes were located within a number of town centre businesses, with customers at Peter Bird Hairdressers, the Central Snooker Club and Pantry Green submitting almost all of the ballot papers available.

Bathers at Asnières, a large scale oil-on-canvas painting showing a group of young workmen relaxing on the River Seine, came out on top and will be displayed in the largest, most prominent location in the town centre.

The spring / summer 2012 Gallery Town art trail is due to be officially launched in June on the seasonal themes of holidays, travel and water. The ballot included artwork by famous painters including Edouard Vuillard, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Jan Van Eyck and Georges Seurat.

Dating from 1884, the winning piece was painted whilst Seurat was 24. He used different techniques to create the heat and haze of a summer's day and made bridges and factories somehow compliment the relaxing scene.

This was the first of Seurat's large-scale compositions and shows him starting to develop his pointillist technique - using countless tiny dots of pure colour, placed in close proximity to each other that relies on a trick of the eye to create a brighter picture, much like modern televisions and computer monitors use pixels.

The original can be seen at The National Gallery in London and despite being rejected by the Paris Salon in 1884, it is now considered one of the best on display in their vast collection.

Nick Cragg, local entrepreneur and member of the Rotherham LSP Board who are leading the project, said: "I'm looking forward to seeing the Seurat take pride of place in Rotherham town centre. The whole collection is being refreshed, much like in a traditional art gallery, and we expect to see increasing numbers of visitors enjoying the art on display.

"Many thanks to everyone who voted and to the town centre businesses who hosted ballot boxes. It is pleasing to see more and more people getting involved in this unique project."

Large-scale reproductions of the masterpieces from The National Gallery will be displayed alongside work by Rotherham students and local artists.

New artwork will appear in the town centre over the coming months and tour guides will be available pointing out the location and details of the art, from the obvious, to those hidden away waiting to be discovered.

News: Relief for Rotherham manufacturers

By

A free seminar is taking place in Rotherham next week to help local manufacturers take up tax relief in the form of tax credits for companies involved in research and development.

The Government is committed to increasing R&D tax relief for SMEs to 225% of qualifying expenditure from April 2012 and 130% relief is available for larger companies.

Experts in audit, tax, and corporate finance, Deloitte has joined together with the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) to provide a free seminar at the AMP Technology Centre in Rotherham on the morning of May 30.

The event includes an overview of the R&D tax credits scheme and its application to manufacturers, highlighting HMRC’s current thinking in this area, the pitfalls that may trip up claimants and exploring the proposed modifications likely to be introduced under the 2013 Finance Bill.

Optimising R&D tax rate relief claims within the manufacturing sector often means looking at activities undertaken beyond any core technical team. The Deloitte R&D tax services team has assisted in the preparation and agreement of thousands of R&D claims, many of which include costs associated with R&D carried out in the manufacturing / production environment. The Deloitte team will explain some of their experiences in this area during the event.

Following the seminar, Deloitte will host a drop-in clinic for attendees, allowing company representatives to share details of potential projects in an initial free 30min consultation, and make initial assessment on the viability of making a claim.

News: Footfall increases in Rotherham despite April showers

By

Footfall in Rotherham town centre increased by 8.8% in April compared to the same month in the previous year, whilst the national High Street average was a decrease of 6.4%.

Springboard, the retail insights specialist that tracks footfall in over 350 UK town and city locations, released figures that showed that Rotherham was one of just a handful of towns where footfall increased.

Springboard calculates the footfall figures using cameras to measure the number of people on specific streets. In Rotherham, footfall in April 2012 was 8.8% up on April 2011. Swindon had a 5.5% increase and Newcastle was 1.0% up with Cardiff showing a slight increase of 0.2%.

The national average showed a 2% decrease and footfall weakened in all types of locations, particularly High Streets with a 6.4% fall.

Diane Wehrle, research director at Springboard, said: "There's no denying that this has been a tough few months but retailers had braced themselves for the blow in light of the weather forecast.

"Rotherham is showing that it is possible to buck the trend and grow the footfall onto the high street, in spite of economic turmoil and turbulent weather. There's no doubt it's been a tough quarter so hopefully things will be even better for Rotherham over the next few months."

High profile events for the Queen's jubilee and the Olympic torch relay are taking place in Rotherham town centre in June.

This is the third time that Rotherham has been highlighted by Springboard for bucking the national trend. Last year, Springboard's National High Street Index showed that whilst the average High Street experienced a -1.2% decline in footfall in September, and regional cities in the UK saw a year-on-year drop of -7.6%, the footfall for Rotherham in September was up by 32.2% compared to the previous year.

Springboard's figures for February 2012 showed that footfall in Rotherham was up by 28.6% compared to the same month last year. The overall national picture showed footfall was 5.7% down.

Tim O'Connell, head of business & retail investment at Rotherham Investment & Development Office, said: "Despite the April washout we are heartened to see yet another uplift in footfall to the town centre.

"This on-going trend for increasing year-on-year footfall is the result of various new schemes to put Rotherham on the map as a destination and the results are paying off. We've offered business vitality grants to attract independent retailers through financial contributions and spearheaded a vacancy filling scheme – the increase in the number of visitors mirrors the positive shopper survey results we've just had which show that town centre users are seeing an improvement in the retail offer."

Steve Booth, CEO of Springboard, added: "These towns and cities are setting an example to retail centres across UK. Tactics to turn around their performance including enhancing the retail offering and promoting community safety have clearly paid off with a trend for growing footfall over the past few months.

"With the DCLG initiatives giving town teams the impetus to think about how they can improve town centre performance, now is the time to look at the success stories and ask how we can replicate their achievements elsewhere."

Rotherham is hoping to find out in the next week or so if they have secured funding through the government's Portas Pilots scheme. A further six are expected to be chosen in June.

News: Bloodhound SSC rolls in to Rotherham

By

A full size version of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car (SSC) that aims to break the world land speed record by achieving the supersonic speed of 1,000mph, will be on show in Rotherham next week.

As part of the British project's education roadshow, the show car, virtual driving experience, and scale rocket will be at the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing on the Advanced Manufacturing Park during a half-day of activities and presentations on May 30.

Building a car quicker than a fighter jet is not, however, the primary goal of the project. Rather, it is to inspire future generations to take up careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by showcasing these subjects in the most exciting way possible.

The project is already being followed in over 5,000 primary and secondary schools across the UK and 207 countries world wide, with around seven million students able to access free curriculum ready Bloodhound information and lesson materials in class.

Ruth Amos, Young Engineer for Britain 2006, will address school students about the Bloodhound SSC project, emphasising the importance of STEM education.

Rotherham high-tech precision engineering sub-contractor, Newburgh Engineering is a project sponsor and has completed Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) gearbox casings for use in the car.

The AMRC's MANTRA (Manufacturing Transporter) will also be open to give aspiring young engineers a hands-on experience with real technologies, and a taste of high value manufacturing and engineering.

Two days earlier, Richard Noble OBE, the former land speed record holder and the project director of the Bloodhound SSC team, will be at The AMRC to give a lecture on the progress of the project. The lecture has been organised by the Sheffield branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

"The new stadium will be a massive success which is great for the town. We will be using our 1925 Club tickets internally but also to entertain clients and customers, and I am sure they will be in high demand."

They will also be able to enjoy lounge, bar and restaurant facilities and VIP parking.

Cllr Roger Stone, the leader of Rotherham Council has used his recent blog to discuss the stadium development that is nearing completion on the Guest & Chrines site close to the town centre.

He said: "The new community stadium is looking more and more impressive each day. I went along to the last game played by the Millers at the Don Valley Stadium and as always, was impressed by the commitment and the loyalty of the fans who have supported their club and the players through the trials and tribulations of the past few years. They can now have their eyes firmly fixed on the 21st July - the first game in the new stadium - and an exciting new future.

"We should all wish them well, in the knowledge that a thriving and successful team based on their own home "turf" can be a great barometer of - and contributor to - how well an area is performing on an economic front and how well the town is perceived outside the area."

News: MP visits SteelPhalt in Rotherham

By

Road surface specialist, SteelPhalt, has welcomed local MP, Kevin Barron to their Rotherham facility to see how they are making the region's roads greener and safer.

The MP for Rother Valley was given a tour of the Templeborough site where SteelPhalt has been developing and manufacturing high performance asphalt products for the UK road making industry since the 1960's.

Dean Raynor, commercial manager at SteelPhalt, said: "We were delighted that Mr Barron, as our MP, made time to visit our plant to learn out more about the process that goes into the creation of the full range SteelPhalt products."

Because of its location at the heart of South Yorkshire's steel industry, the company has always been ideally located to source slag cost-effectively from the surrounding steel industry - a sustainable way of making asphalt since at least 95 per cent of the product is recycled.

With a reputation for first class products matched by a commitment to innovation and sustainability, the company works in partnership with councils, local authorities and contractors nationwide to deliver durable roads for a sustainable world.

SteelPhalt surfaces, which are used across the region, have a high skid resistance and are also a key tool in increasing road safety in busy areas like the roads around schools and other high traffic volume sites.

Part of the Harsco Metals Group, SteelPhalt's steel slag products extends the life of roads and lengthens road maintenance intervals for resurfacing.

News: Low demand continues to affect Tata Steel

By

A low demand for steel as a result of the financial problems in the eurozone has played a part in Tata Steel Europe's EBITDA (earnings before tax) falling to $349m for the financial year ending March 31, 2012. This is down from $922m in the previous year.

The Indian-owned firm operates specialist steel producing sites in Rotherham. The steel, predominantly stainless and low alloy grades, is used in landing gear and aircraft engines.

The fall in earnings was despite turnover in Tata Steel Europe for the year increasing to $16.15 billion from $14.52 billion and sales increasing by 3.7%.

This was due to higher raw material costs.

Dr Karl-Ulrich Köhler, MD & CEO at Tata Steel Europe, said: "The continuing eurozone crisis kept EU steel demand well below pre-crisis levels in the March quarter. In addition, operational difficulties that affected strip product output caused the European operations to perform worse than in the year-earlier period. But there was an improvement in performance over the third quarter, when the cost-price squeeze caused by high raw materials volatility was at its most extreme."

A £6.5m investment in aerospace steel production has recently completed at Tata Steel's South Yorkshire sites. It will boost output of specialist steels by 30% and has led to the creation of eight new jobs. The scheme includes two new vacuum arc remelting (VAR) furnaces and specialist testing equipment, as well as a new ultrasonic immersion testing facility.

Last month GE Aviation became the latest aircraft engine maker to endorse Tata Steel's manufacturing capabilities, approving the laboratory testing procedures at laboratories in Rotherham and Stocksbridge. The company already has approvals from Rolls-Royce, Pratt & Whitney and Snecma (part of SAFRAN group).

News: Green light for Rotherham tram-train project

By

The government has confirmed £58m for a new tram-train project between Sheffield and Rotherham, the first project of its kind in the country.

The pilot scheme will see flexible vehicles run on both rail and tram networks, using the freight route from Rotherham and then joining the Sheffield Supertram network at Meadowhall South. Three trams an hour would run all day from Sheffield city centre through the redeveloped Rotherham Central station to Parkgate retail park.

The project would include major works such as the electrification of a stretch of track between Sheffield and Rotherham and the construction of 400 metre line linking the tramway to the train tracks.

Additional stations along the route (such as Templeborough) are not part of the scheme at this stage but are being considered for a later date.

The pilot will run for two years with a view to permanent operation.

The scheme would improve connectivity within the labour market and support economic growth by making better use of the existing tram network and free up capacity at Sheffield Rail Station by diverting services onto the tram network. The project is also expected to create 35 new jobs locally.

If the pilot is successful, it opens the way for tram-trains to be introduced in other parts of the country. The South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) estimate that the trial will generate potential industry benefits in excess of £38m.

Norman Baker, transport minister, said: "Providing better connections between Sheffield and Rotherham's city centres and residential areas will help to reinvigorate the local economy. It will also encourage people to leave their cars at home, making this pilot environmentally friendly.

"This is great news for passengers in South Yorkshire and potentially it could benefit people across the country wherever tram and rail networks exist together.

"Tram-trains have already proven hugely popular on the Continent. Now we will be able to test whether they can bridge the gap between tram and train networks in this country."

David Brown, director general at the SYPTE, said: "We welcome the announcement today by the Minister confirming approval of the funding for the Sheffield / Rotherham tram train project. It is further welcome investment by government in the transport infrastructure of South Yorkshire.

"The project will provide important enhanced local connectivity and demonstrate the potential, both locally and nationally, of this new technology to deliver value for money services."

SYPTE, Northern Rail and Network Rail have been working together on a pilot project, first announced in 2009, that received the backing of the government with a £150,000 grant in 2011.

With agreement from the Department for Transport (DfT), partners have developed a business case that combines the tram-train trial with the project to increase capacity on the existing Supertram network in Sheffield. The £18m project to introduce four new tram vehicles secured £12.3m from the DfT last year.

Phil Verster, route managing director for Network Rail, said: "Tram Trains offer a real opportunity to improve transport links in urban areas and today's announcement of funding is extremely welcome.

"We have already learned a significant amount about how a tram-train could benefit Britain's rail network. Now we can move into detailed design and delivery of the infrastructure to support this exciting project which will bring lasting benefits to passengers in the Sheffield and Rotherham areas."

Ian Bevan, managing director at Northern Rail, added: "We are working with our partners to pilot Tram Trains on the network as we believe these vehicles can complement heavy rail, particularly in outer urban and semi-rural areas around major cities with an existing tram network. There are lessons to be learned here and Northern cities are among those well placed to benefit from them."

The new tram-train vehicles, provided by German company, Vossloh, will operate from 2015.

News: English Heritage oppose Guest & Chrimes demolition plans

By

Plans by Rotherham United to demolish the rear of the former Guest & Chrimes foundry, in a bid to protect the building's historic frontage, are being opposed by English Heritage.

The £20m New York Stadium is heading towards completion on the site close to Rotherham town centre. The remaining Grade II listed buildings of the former iron and brass foundry sit between the stadium and the council's new offices on Main Street.

RU Estates Ltd has the overall aim to refurbish and restore the main frontage buildings after it was advised that it would take an investment of £8.8m just to bring the current property up to a marketable condition.

A planning application was submitted in March.

English Heritage works to protect and promote England's historic environment and ensure that its past is researched and understood. In response to the plans, they have asked that they be withdrawn and a new development be designed that would include the retention of all, or a substantial part of the Guest & Chrimes complex.

English Heritage doesn't accept that the significance of the foundry has been fully set out. The applicants believe that the significance of the building lies solely in its architecture and heritage consultants working for the football club concluded that the remaining buildings are of significant local interest but moderate regional, and low national interest. The interest having been eroded by more modern alterations to the buildings and recent damage.

However, "English Heritage considers that over and above its architectural significance, the Guest & Chrimes complex also has archaeological / evidential significance and historic significance."

English Heritage requires further assessment of the significance before they can assess the impact of the demolition. Their worry is that partial demolition would lead to de-listing, and further harm to the remaining buildings.

Regarding the re-use of the building, English Heritage doesn't believe that the building is incapable of conversion and is concerned about the setting harming the listed building with the regeneration of the site led by New York Stadium and Riverside House.

Craig Broadwith, historic buildings and areas advisor at English Heritage, said: "The harm ... must be considered against the clear substantial public benefit accrued through the construction of the new stadium and offices; these interventions can be the catalyst for the further regeneration of the New York area of Rotherham. However, this should not be at the cost of the further harm to the Guest & Chrimes complex, through its partial demolition, particularly as it has not directly benefited from the construction of the stadium or offices.

"English Heritage continues to believe that further options may be available, in the new context created by the Rotherham United football stadium and the occupation of Riverside House by the local authority."

They have asked for a full planning application based on the conservation and a sustainable re-use of most of the significant components of the Guest & Chrimes complex.

News: Rotherham Birthdays store to close

By

The Rotherham store at Parkgate of national greeting card retailer, Birthdays, will close, administrators confirmed yesterday.

The store is a subsidiary of Clinton Cards Plc which entered administration last week. Zolfo Cooper, the administrators, announced that all Birthdays stores will close along with approximately 200 Clinton Cards branded stores, adding that exact locations, timings and employee numbers will be confirmed shortly.

Rotherham has a Clinton store on College Street in the town centre.

The Group is the UK's largest specialist retailer of greetings cards and related products with in excess of 750 stores and 2011 revenues of over £360 million across its two retail brands, Clinton Cards and Birthdays.

Clintons was founded in 1968 and is listed on the London Stock Exchange. It has a significant high street presence and employs over 8,000 full time and part time staff.

The stores that are set to close are located throughout the country and employ approximately 2,800 full time and part time staff.

The Birthdays store opened at Parkgate in 2008 as a concession in the Pure Party unit alongside Game and Thorntons, two retailers that have also had financial struggles.

The store closure programme will begin during next week and continue into June.

Peter Saville, joint administrator and partner at Zolfo Cooper said: "Recently, Clintons has been faced with extremely challenging trading conditions, particularly in its Birthdays subsidiary, where the combined cost to the Group in terms of acquisition cost and accumulated losses is estimated to have been in excess of £130m since 2004.

"Given the sheer size of the Clinton Cards retail estate and the overall performance, we were left with no alternative to today's difficult decision. I am hopeful that the action we have taken will allow us to preserve value in the core underlying business, thereby allowing us and potential buyers to focus on a profitable and viable retail estate going forward."

News: Rotherham to host nuclear manufacturing skills academy

By

The government has confirmed funding for a new skills centre for nuclear manufacturing, led by the National Skills Academy for Nuclear with support from the Nuclear AMRC in Rotherham.

The National Skills Academy Nuclear – Manufacturing will create a single point of entry for employers and a dedicated team, based at the Nuclear AMRC's facility on the Advanced Manufacturing Park, will tackle the most urgent skills challenges facing the nuclear manufacturing industry.

The team will develop training and skills products to help companies win new business, and expand the established High Quality Provider Network into the nuclear manufacturing sector.

The £25m Nuclear AMRC is a joint initiative between the University of Sheffield, The University of Manchester, and a consortium of industry partners. It assists UK companies to successfully compete in the emerging £40 billion civil nuclear supply chain.

Currently, from large multi-nationals to SMEs, manufacturers have identified a shortage of skilled labour with the competencies required to support the nuclear programme. This is a significant barrier to them being able to maintain their existing operations in the nuclear market, and a real hindrance to growth in the sector.

The expansion will support the maximisation of nuclear opportunities for UK manufacturing industry in both the UK and globally, delivering the skills requirements they need to grow their current market share. Complementing this will be the delivery of manufacturing/engineering training to provide high quality long-term careers for people in this market.

The new project is backed by the Skills Funding Agency at the Department of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS). It marks an expansion of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear (NSA Nuclear) into the nuclear manufacturing sector, with support from Semta, the sector skills council for advanced manufacturing and engineering, and the Nuclear AMRC.

Professor Steve Court, operations director for the Nuclear AMRC, said: "This collaboration with the National Skills Academy for Nuclear and SEMTA is a unique opportunity to really make a tangible difference for employers.

"By applying our knowledge and understanding of nuclear manufacturing, we can develop products and solutions which will build workforce skills and knowledge and help companies demonstrate their capability to customers when they bid for work."

Jean Llewellyn OBE, chief executive of NSA Nuclear, added: "The opportunities for the manufacturing supply chain in this area are considerable from the UK alone, running into many millions. Combine this with the global market share manufacturers in the UK could access and the importance of this sector in delivering high value exports becomes apparent.

"The Nuclear Manufacturing expansion of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear will support the UK supply chain to ensure it is well placed and has the skilled workforce required to gain maximum value from this global renaissance."

News: Harworth submit plans for Rossington redevelopment

By

Rotherham-based Harworth Estates has submitted an outline planning application for the redevelopment and regeneration of the former colliery at Rossington in Doncaster, which has lain vacant and derelict since is closure and demolition in 2007.

Submission of the application follows the recent application for the new FARRRS (Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme) road scheme and the recent approval for the Inland Port which is immediately to the west of the colliery site.

The proposal forms an integral part of the regeneration plans for Rossington and the wider area, with a link road from the new FARRRS road to Rossington passing through the colliery site and transforming the access to and from the village with Doncaster and the motorway. The new development will deliver up to 1,200 new homes, a local foodstore, community building, hotel, restaurant and land for a new primary school.

The scheme will also provide children's play space and access to new public open space provided on the restored spoil heap land to the south.

The spoil heap will be restored following the coal washing and recycling project being undertaken by Recycoal which has recently been granted planning permission. The scheme will provide a major catalyst for regeneration and investment within the area and the Doncaster Borough as a whole, and is consistent with the Council's requirements for housing development over the next 15 years.

A decision is anticipated on the application in Summer 2012, with the initial works on the site clean-up and road link expected to start before the end of the year.

Harworth Estates is the property arm of UK Coal and one of the largest landowners in the UK with access to over 30,000 acres of land. They moved their offices last year to the Advanced Manufacturing Park which sits on the site of the former Orgreave Colliery and proposed £100m Waverley community development.

News: Stafforce joins council and Job Centre to get the unemployed reinstated into employment

By

Rotherham's fast growing national specialist recruiter, Stafforce, has been partnering Sheffield City Council and Jobcentre Plus to help newly unemployed people in the business, administration and finance sectors back into work quickly via a number of innovative recruitment methods.

An initial group of 43 recent jobless were identified, with the aim of getting at least 18 of them back into permanent work, or "temp to perm" (temporary work with the prospect of a permanent position).

Opportunities were identified by interrogating vacancies registered with Stafforce and through the company's ongoing liaison with clients; taking instructions and counselling on where there is a need for able players.

Every candidate was assessed on their job readiness and which available posts they would be most suitable for. These exercises were followed by intensive preparation and coaching of the individuals for interview, then the vacancy requirements, if successful, and, finally, in-work support for both individual and employer as they start their professional relationship.

Paul Brammer, director of services at Stafforce, said: "This is an example of private and public sector organisations with common aims adopting a flexible approach to work efficiently at helping individuals and local markets. The longer somebody is out of work the harder it is for them to get back into it. Employers baulk at a long career gap, while the grip of psychological factors, such as depleted confidence and inertia become ever tighter as weeks pass."

John Powell, senior project officer at Sheffield City Council's Employment and Skills Team, added: "The aim of the programme was to prevent job loss becoming a long term prospect, and to ensure that vital skills and experience are not lost to the economy. This partnership has enabled Stafforce to successfully engage with individuals further away from the labour market and support them back into the labour market."

Carly Cotton was one of the people supported by the programme and she has been back in work in a business administration role for five weeks now. It has already made a massive difference to her life. She said: "I hated having to take my two young children to sign on and found it so demoralising. Now I've actually managed to find a part-time job that fits in with my family and it's great. I'm really enjoying working, I feel so much happier and it has given me a boost to my confidence."

News: Rotherham students to take part in UK engineering challenge

By

Budding young engineers from Rotherham recently took up the task of researching, designing and building solutions to real engineering problems.

Teams from the Brinsworth Comprehensive School took part in a Faraday Challenge Day, part of the Institution of Engineering and Technology's (IET) Faraday education programme which includes 55 challenge days across the UK.

The aim to encourage more young people to study and consider exciting and rewarding careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) by encouraging creativity, innovation and problem solving skills.

Each event involves six school teams each made up of six 12 - 13 year old students studying Science, Design Technology and Maths.

Dee Halil, education manager at IET, said: "Students taking part in the Faraday Challenge Days experience hands-on design and practical work giving them a peek into the life of a real engineer, the variety of engineering out there and the central role it plays in our everyday lives. We are confident that this will challenge young people's perceptions of engineers and the jobs they do.

"The challenge is unveiled afresh at each event, so it's top secret until then, but with the Olympics less than a year away, we can say that it will be about finding a solution to a real engineering problem linked directly to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This is a great way to show young people the vital role engineering has played in the Olympics."

Each team member in the winning group will be awarded a prize and a trophy for their school. The top three teams from across the UK will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the national final in London in June 2012 to compete for a cash prize of up to £1,000 for their school.

News: TiTAN X-TREME launched at MACH 2012

By

Rotherham-based Nikken Kosakusho Europe Ltd and Sheffield's Techicut Ltd have formally launched a new system for machining titanium and other exotic materials.

The TiTAN X-TREME was launched at MACH 2012 and combines the new X-Treme variant of the Nikken Anniversary Type Multi-Lock Milling Chuck with Technicut's TiTAN Rippa carbide cutter.

Milling titanium is different from other metals because of the risk of heat build-up and the metal's low thermal conductivity can result in combustion.

The new system underwent cutting trials using Titanium H6 at The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham.

This has helped to increase removal rates to 267cm³ of material every minute and the combination is able to take cuts of 50mm depth. Tool life has also been increased to over an hour where the industry average is as low as 15 minutes before the cutter needs to be sent for re-grinding and calibration of any complex geometry.

Tony Bowkett, group managing director of Nikken Europe Ltd, said: "This landmark partnership between Nikken and Technicut had the potential to revolutionise cutting practices especially in the aerospace sector where there is a real focus on the use of Titanium and other exotic metals."
