Manufacturing companies in Sheffield and Rotherham are being invited to visit two local companies to view Powerstar's energy saving technology installed on their sites, that is helping reduce their electricity bills and carbon footprint.

The Powerstar system is the only voltage optimisation system wholly designed and manufactured in the UK and works by reducing the the voltage supplied by the National Grid. It can actively reduce electrical energy consumption by an average of 12-15% of consumed electricity.

It was developed by Dr Alex Mardapittas at EMSc (UK) Ltd, which employs over 100 people and has manufactured more than 4,000 systems installed in 15 countries. Having grown up in Rotherham, the company expanded from its premises at Templeborough and relocated to St Paul's Developments' Smithy Wood Business Park in Sheffield, increasing manufacturing capacity by 500%.

In conjunction with Powerstar, Swann Morton in Sheffield and Newburgh Precision in Rotherham are opening their facilities to allow other manufacturing companies in the region to take a "behind the scenes" look at the voltage optimisation systems in operation, on site.

Attendees will also benefit from a short presentation from representatives of Swann Morton and Newburgh Precision about their experiences following the installation of the solution. Powerstar representatives will also be on hand to answer any questions relating to the technology.

Nick Lee, marketing manager at Powerstar, said: "Aimed at senior managers responsible for managing energy costs, we are delighted to be working with current clients to showcase real life voltage optimisation installations to other companies in the region. Rotherham firms, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions and Newburgh Precision, have joined other established Yorkshire manufacturing companies such as Swann Morton and AESSEAL, in installing locally engineered voltage optimisation solution, Powerstar to cut their energy consumption.

The Powerstar system is the only voltage optimisation system wholly designed and manufactured in the UK and works by reducing the the voltage supplied by the National Grid. It can actively reduce electrical energy consumption by an average of 12-15% of consumed electricity.

Dave Burrows, plant provision manager at Newburgh Precision, where they have seen a 10% reduction in energy consumption and annual financial savings of £14,079 at their Templeborough facility, said: "Powerstar gave us an effective, guaranteed option to reduce our electricity consumption and carbon emissions. We have seen a reduction in motor drive failures, giving us greater efficiency and providing further savings on top of those promised."

Newburgh Precision is a contract manufacturing specialist whose components and assemblies are benchmarked against the best in the world and are distributed globally to customers in all major industrial sectors.

Speaking of the installation at Trelleborg, which saw savings of 11.2%, production engineer Daniel Durrant commented: "Powerstar presented their findings and showed us we could make further, significant reductions as well as reducing harmonics and correcting the incoming voltage for our equipment on site. The guaranteed savings presented were exceeded and the installation was quick with minimal disruption. I'd fully recommend voltage optimisation through Powerstar."

Also based at Templeborough, Trelleborg's Rotherham facility is part of the Swedish industrial group that is a world leader in engineered polymer solutions that seal, damp and protect critical applications in demanding environments.

EMSc (UK) Ltd is celebrating 13 years of UK design and manufacture of the innovative Star range of energy saving products.

EMSc employs over 100 people and has manufactured more than 4,000 systems installed in 15 countries. Since being launched in 2001, two new Powerstar systems have been added to the range. In 2010 Powerstar MAX was introduced as electronic-dynamic voltage optimisation, for those with fluctuating voltage or varying loads. And in 2012, Powerstar HV MAX was launched which uses a low-loss amorphous core HV transformer combined with its optimisation system. Both products continue to lead the market, and have joined the original low voltage Powerstar variation in saving a plethora of clients millions of pounds on their energy bills whilst reducing their carbon footprint over a successful 13 year period.

Last year the firm secured £3m of additional funding from RBS to support further expansion. It aims to become a £60m company in the next five years.

With internationally renowned Powerstar inventor Dr Alex Mardapittas at its helm, the company has appointed a new non-executive chairman and two new directors to the board as part of a long-term strategy to continue growing Powerstar across the UK and internationally.

Stephen Hepplewhite, who joins as non-executive chairman will work alongside managing director Dr Mardapittas, together with the board, on future strategies, best practice and corporate governance, as the company continues to go from strength to strength.

Mr Hepplewhite has PLC main board and private company experience in a wide variety of sectors including steel, shipping, logistics, food ingredients, chemicals, solvent recovery, ultra sound and brewing.

The two new directors, who have also become board members are, Robert Macklin and David Taylor.

Mr Macklin, who has held a number of senior finance positions in both the metals and food industry, has joined the company as group finance director from his previous role as the commercial financial controller for The 2 Sisters Food Group. Mr Macklin is a qualified accountant and studied accountancy and finance at the University in Sheffield.

Operations manager David Taylor has been promoted to operations director. Mr Taylor has eight years experience as a consulting engineer within the energy sector. He also has 15 years previous experience as an engineer and manager within the motors and drives industry. He is a member of SOE IPlantE and member of the Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET).

Current board member Stuart Clegg, commercial director, who has been with the company for over five years will expand his responsibilities to head up the restructured Powerstar sales department, as well as being the first line responsibility for corporate business development.

The innovative firm expanded from premises in Rotherham last year to a 23,620 sq ft unit in Sheffield comprising the head office, manufacturing space and R&D facilities.

The Powerstar system is the only voltage optimisation system wholly designed and manufactured in the UK and works by reducing the the voltage supplied by the National Grid. It can actively reduce electrical energy consumption by an average of 12-15% of consumed electricity.

It is hoped that the new funding from RBS will help enable the company to capitalise on significant demand from both domestic and international markets.

The demand was shown recently when a £50m tranche of funding, made available to private and public sector companies seeking to install energy saving solutions in the last quarter of 2013, was completely allocated. EMSc (UK) Ltd received over 1,300 applications for the funding.

Following continued export growth, Rotherham based manufacturing company EMS UK Ltd has expanded its international network by signing a distribution contract with Polish company On Sp. z o.o. based in Rzeszów.

Rotherham-based manufacturing company EMS (UK) Ltd, has added a new product to its Powerstar range of voltage optimisation systems.

Powerstar uses a patented design, which can actively reduce electrical energy consumption by an average of 12-15% of consumed electricity.

The Powerstar system is the only voltage optimisation system wholly designed and manufactured in the UK and works by reducing the the voltage supplied by the National Grid.

At a recent manufacturing sustainability conference, the Templeborough firm launched Powerstar HV MAX, which uses a low-loss amorphous core HV transformer combined with its optimisation system.

Older transformers have high levels of standing losses and the majority of modern transformers used on commercial sites use Cold Rolled Grain Oriented steel (CRGO) within their core, which still provide significant losses for buildings in comparison to amorphous steel.

Dr Alex Mardapittas, managing director at EMSc (UK) Ltd, said: "Powerstar HV MAX can be used to replace older transformers on existing sites, or be included in new build projects in order to provide the optimum voltage output for the site. This will not only reduce standing losses by around 75%, but will also lower electricity costs by reducing on-site energy consumption."

The company is hoping for interest from new build developers and the system is ideal for sites with secure data and critical operations such as office buildings, hotels, hospitals, supermarkets and education facilities.

A typical payback period for installing the system is less than five years.

The Powerstar system is the only voltage optimisation system wholly designed and manufactured in the UK and works by reducing the the voltage supplied by the National Grid.

The decision was made earlier this year due to the overwhelming success Powerstar has achieved in Australia over the past few years and the Melbourne office will allow the company to further develop its market presence.

As part of its expansion strategy, the company will be looking at establishing partnerships with a number of energy consultants and third party distributors to help promote and sell Powerstar across Australia.

EMSc (UK) Ltd, the Rotherham-based manufacturer, will launch the latest addition to its innovative range of energy saving solutions at the inaugural Manufacturing Sustainability Conference in Rotherham next month.

The free to attend conference at the Magna Science Adventure Centre on Sept 18 will be delivered by EMSc (UK) Ltd, manufacturer of the Star range of energy saving solutions, in partnership with Made in Sheffield.

The Conference will provide a platform to promote innovative British manufacturing as well as to provide the manufacturing sector with comprehensive information relating to sustainability issues and ways to improve energy efficiency.

News: New Greek distributor for EMSc (UK) Ltd

EMSc (UK) Ltd, the Rotherham-based manufacturer of the Star range of energy saving solutions, played host to a number of representatives from its newest international distributor, Athens-based Redex Societe Anonyme (SA), in July.

The team from Greece, headed by Mr Alexandros Alivizatos, attended a week-long dedicated product training course aimed at educating them on Powerstar, its applications, selling strategies, and service at EMSc (UK) Ltd's premises in Templeborough.

Powerstar, the voltage optimisation system designed and manufactured in Rotherham has been named as the winner of the Technology Innovation of the Year Award during the regional PwC Private Business Awards in Leeds last month.

The award, which recognises world-leading technology, was presented to EMSc (UK) Ltd and the Templeborough company will now be entered into the national PwC Private Business Awards 2012, scheduled to take place in September in London.

Powerstar is the only voltage optimisation system wholly designed and manufactured in the UK and works by reducing the the voltage supplied by the National Grid. Using a patented design, the system can actively reduce electrical energy consumption by an average of 12-15% of consumed electricity.

The company also recently succeeded in invalidating an EU trademark registration for the term "VPO – Voltage Power Optimisation."

In upholding the request for invalidity, the EU trademark registry confirmed that the term is devoid of any distinctive character and that it is descriptive of the goods in relation to which registration was sought.

Commenting on the ruling Dr Mardapittas, said: "We are very happy with the ruling that the term "VPO – voltage power optimisation" cannot be registered. It is great news for all manufacturers of voltage optimisation products, as it will not only allow them to compete on a level playing field, but more importantly it will allow the market to flourish as the technology of voltage optimisation will become more transparent."

News: Powerstar installed at Swann-Morton

The Swann-Morton Group, the world leading manufacturer of surgical blades, scalpels and handles, has installed a Powerstar voltage optimisation unit at their Sheffield premises.

Supplied by Rotheham-based EMSc UK Ltd, The Powerstar system is the only voltage optimisation system wholly designed and manufactured in the UK and works by reducing the the voltage supplied by the National Grid.

The system will help Swann-Morton achieve energy savings of 9.9% – or £11,559 – per annum while also reducing its CO2 emissions by 102.5 tonnes. The award-wining solution was selected as part of an initiative to support British entrepreneurship and manufacturing, and in line with Swann-Morton’s aims of reducing the environmental impact associated with the products and materials purchased and used by the group.

News: Powerstar installed at engineering school

Rotherham-based EMSc UK Ltd, the market leading manufacturer of the world's most efficient voltage optimisation system, Powerstar, has successfully installed their system at St Hild's Church of England School, a specialist engineering college in Hartlepool.

Powerstar was installed after Year 8 students at St Hild's identified the need to effectively reduce the energy output of the school in order to reduce its overall environmental impact and carbon footprint.

In addition to lowering energy consumption by 9.2%, the installation will reduce annual CO2 emissions by 27.1 tonnes, which will decrease the school's CRC tax payments by £325 per year. The installation will see the school save £4,795 per annum in electricity costs.

Rotherham manufacturer, EMSc UK Ltd, has installed their market leading voltage optimisation system, Powerstar, into the Palace of Westminster and London City Hall.

The Powerstar system is the only voltage optimisation system wholly designed and manufactured in the UK and works by reducing the the voltage supplied by the National Grid.

The Palace of Westminster is the home of Big Ben and the House of Commons and the results of the installation will be monitored over the next few months.

The installation of Powerstar at London City Hall, which was designed by leading architect Sir Norman Foster to maximise energy efficiency, has resulted in annual energy consumption savings of 13.6%.

Rotherham manufacturer, EMSc (UK) Ltd has been helping a government department to save money, just in time for the Budget.

Award-winning Powerstar voltage optimisation units have been installed at the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS), resulting in immediate savings in energy consumption and a substantial reduction in electricity costs and CO2 emissions.

The Powerstar voltage optimisation system generally achieves average savings of 12-15%, improves the life expectancy of electrical equipment, and enhances power quality by reducing harmonics.

The system is the only voltage optimisation system wholly designed and manufactured in the UK and works by reducing the the voltage supplied by the National Grid.

Installed after a site survey indicated that the incoming voltage at a number of BIS buildings was high and that the power quality was poor, the Powerstar units have achieved savings of between 6.2% and 13.7% on total electricity consumption, resulting in a significant annual cost saving in excess of £30,000 for BIS. In addition, annual CO2 emissions from the buildings have been reduced by a collective 265 tonnes.

Dr Alex Mardapittas, designer of Powerstar and managing director of EMSc (UK) Ltd, said: "Our team's engineering expertise and project led approach ensured that we were able to tailor the correct solution for BIS. This meant that we were not only able to optimise savings, but also address the power quality issues."
