News: Engineering a way to keep business local

By

IntraSale, an online business referral platform "radically-different" to what has gone before, has been launched by Vince Middleton OBE, the managing director of award-winning Rotherham firm, Newburgh Engineering.

A decade in the planning, Middleton has devised a cost-effective, secure, members-only referral and recommendation tool with the aim of helping businesses flourish.

Working at the Templeborough precision manufacturer, Vince rarely had time to network - or make connections via the thousands of business cards he had amassed over the years. When he wanted to find a specialist for a job, he had to wade through his drawerful of cards, or call trusted contacts for recommendations.

The business development tool aims to unlock opportunities and prevent missed opportunities. It is fired by traditional business values Vince believes should not be lost - trust, honesty and having the generosity of spirit to blow the trumpet for people whose work you value.

Vince Middleton, founder of IntraSale (pictured, centre), said: "IntraSale members don't sell themselves or tout for work; via the site they put forward the best people they know to contacts who have a job they need doing.

"If a client needs a service I can't deliver, why not recommend them to the likes of Forgemasters? It gets me credibility, solves a customer’s problem and brings business to the SCR [Sheffield city region]."

Two other highly-regarded business names in the SCR have thrown their weight behind the scheme with personal endorsements. Professor Keith Ridgway, founder and executive chair of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in Rotherham, and Alan Lyons, founder of networking group Lyons Den, have invited hundreds of their contacts to join.

Vince anticipates referrals amounting to over £1 billion within the first five years. He believes the site has potential to go global and eventually rival both LinkedIn, which he claims is now awash with recruiters and self-promoters, and one-seat business groups whose members do business solely with each other.

Since the soft launch in April, over 230 businesses have signed up, including universities, property developers, accountants, lawyers, engineering companies, surveyors, a print shop, painter and decorator and a beauty company to name a few.

Middleton added: "My sector is engineering and manufacturing but this platform is for anyone in business. We want tradespeople and professional services, digital and creative industries to benefit too."

IntraSale has already led to work being won via recommendations from a number of members. IntraSale itself used the platform's Call Out section to find endorsements for a design company for its marketing banners and a PR team.

The platform needs to grow its database and more businesses are being sought as founder members, for a £99 one-time fee, by June 30. Afterwards the cost will be significantly more.

Enterprise Software Architecture Trends Influencing Digital Service Platforms

Vince originally wanted to create IntraSale in printed form and in 2008 approached regional authorities and business support organisations, to no avail. The idea went on the backburner until he crossed paths with software developer Sean Maloney who has since developed the complex software and interactive platform and is still involved with the running of IntraSale while also heading up his own start-up, Tower DMS.

IntraSale membership fees will be ploughed into job creation and further software development to ensure it is a worldwide success. Sheffield Hallam graduate Felix Barr is in place as business development manager and a graduate systems manager and a digital marketeer are being sought.

News: JCI Rotherham getting ready to relaunch

By

An expanding worldwide network for young business leaders is increasing its presence in Yorkshire and relaunching in Rotherham.

Junior Chamber International (JCI), which currently has 200,000 members worldwide and 150 members in five existing chambers in the region, is launching a new chamber in Rotherham later this month.

People wishing to develop their skills in Rotherham will have the chance to take part in the exciting projects which JCI offers for people aged between 18 – 40, joining existing opportunities already available in Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Barnsley, Harrogate and Doncaster as well as an exciting new monthly program held in Rotherham.

Founded in 1915 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA by Henry Giessenbier as a constructive approach to civic problems, the movement spread, and Junior Chamber International was founded with eight other countries in 1944. JCI provides young people with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurship and fellowship necessary to create positive change. Past members of JCI include Kofi Annan, Bill Clinton and Bill Gates.

The program includes networking for business and socially, developing confidence in public speaking and debating, taking part in local, national and international events and supporting the local community and charitable projects.

JCI's membership is diverse – from start-up entrepreneurs to people working in blue chip companies, non-profit organisations and charities, as well as people looking for work. JCI members come from all walks of life, and from all around the world. But they are united in one common aim: Be better by being who you want to be.

JCI Rotherham was originally founded in 1955 by DR Clarke and it spent 44 years making a difference in the local community. In 2001, JCI Rotherham and JCI Barnsley merged following the example of the chamber of commerce at that time but now the Rotherham branch is back.

Charlie Pearson, who was a President of JCI Barnsley last year and who is now the relaunching President of JCI Rotherham, said: "I have gained so much from JCI and when the opportunity came up to re-launch the organisation I wanted to give young people of Rotherham who just want the chance to better themselves or their community."

A relaunch event is being held at Rotherham College of Arts & Technology's (RCAT's) town centre campus on February 17 at 6:30pm.

Chambers of Commerce across the Sheffield city region (SCR) are launching a joint initiative to help their members grow.

The City Region Networking Breakfasts are a joint initiative between The Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, Doncaster Chamber of Commerce and Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce.

The bi-monthly breakfast events will take place on the third Tuesday of the month and will be held at Tankersley Manor Hotel in Barnsley. The first event is scheduled for February 18 at 7:30am.

News: JCI Barnsley wins European award

By

JCI Barnsley has been awarded the "Best Local Growth and Development Program in Europe" For the Diamond Challenge run in 2012.

Junior Chamber International (JCI) is a global network for young people and held its European award ceremony earlier this month.

The European award is the first to be won by JCI Barnsley in its 61 years of actively trying to make a difference in Barnsley. It was also the only European award to be won by any chamber in the UK this year on an international level.

The Diamond challenge was a program run as a last attempt to stop the chamber becoming non-existent. After a high of over 100 members and being the biggest chamber outside London in the 70's, at the beginning of 2012 membership numbers had dropped to just 12.

This challenge was put into place to find and engage young active citizens in Barnsley to make a real difference to the community. Membership numbers are now at 30 and growing with further support from 14 business patrons from across the Barnsley area.

It's a set up at that the organisers would love to see replicated in Rotherham.

With over £100 raised for Help 4 Heroes last year, this years chosen charity is The Barnsley Blind and Partly Sighted Association and over £300 has been raised so far with a swim challenge still to come.

After reforming the chamber, 2013 sees JCI Barnsley launch five full development programs to help members and visitors in Personal Development, Business, Social Skills, Support network and Charity projects.

Charlie Pearson, president of JCI Barnsley (picture above, centre), said: "Everything we do is to make a difference to the town and it's people by giving young people the skills they need to be a success. This has been done throughout our history and this award is for all our members, patrons and senators. I am incredibly proud of their efforts and honoured to be their President."

News: Oxley & Coward mean business

By

Rotherham's Oxley & Coward Solicitors has pencilled in another business networking event for later this year after a successful event earlier this month.

The event was in partnership with Rotherham-based financial advisors, Hawley & Wood and attendees were treated to a business breakfast followed by pure, uninterrupted networking.

"We'd like to thank Hawley & Wood for their support and hope even more local businesses will join us for future events."

Simon Hawley of Hawley & Wood, added: "We were delighted to support Oxley & Coward and its clients and partners in assisting with this innovative networking breakfast.

News: Fripp Design benefits from AEM network

By

A Rotherham industrial design company has seen huge benefits from membership of the AEM Yorkshire Network, which has contributed to a significant increase in business in 2010.

Based at the Advanced Manufacturing Park, Fripp Design has doubled its workforce and its turnover in the past 12 months, part of which it attributes to the excellent contacts the company has built up as a member of the AEM Yorkshire Network.

Tom Fripp, Design Director of Fripp Design said: "We are very optimistic about the future for manufacturers in the South Yorkshire region.

"AEM is a great network for companies that are involved in advanced manufacture and industrial/product design and we have found it to be very beneficial for making contacts and identifying market opportunities for our services."

The AEM Yorkshire Network was established in January 2010 and is run by NAMTEC (National Metals Technology Centre) in Rotherham. The network is a membership body that is aimed at companies and agencies involved in research and development and provides access to well researched information and insights into emerging technologies and markets.

Alan McLelland, Director of AEM Yorkshire, said: "The Network was launched to increase the competitiveness of Yorkshire and Humber businesses by helping them to identify opportunities for growth in current and new market sectors.

"We now have 500 member companies and over the past year, many have been able to benefit from making business connections, as well as accessing high quality information to facilitate growth. The Coalition Government has pledged its support for manufacturers and we look forward to continuing to promote UK manufacturing and ensure our members receive the support they need to prosper."

The AEM Yorkshire Network is part of a broader AEM programme, which also provides an opportunity for manufacturing businesses to benefit from support to undertake research and development, including help to secure funding and to access relevant training and skills enhancements.

The network runs an extensive events programme, which includes regular seminars on topical subjects directly relevant to its members.

News: AEM Innovation Network events in Rotherham

By

NAMTEC's AEM Innovation Network is hosting two manufacturing events in Rotherham in October.

The Innovation Network is aimed at companies and agencies involved in research and development and provides access to well researched information and insights into emerging technologies and markets.

In association with TWI Ltd, an event entitled Low Carbon Vehicle Technology, The Natural Way, will take place on October 12 at TWI's Technology Centre on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham.

The event looks at the use of composite materials in low carbon vehicles. Advanced composites are light-weight, high performance materials. Their use to reduce weight in automotive, aerospace and other transport applications can deliver savings in running costs, and more significantly, carbon emissions, helping increase resource efficiency and drive our shift to low carbon vehicles.

Paul Burling, technical expert at TWI will provide an overview of natural composite materials and discuss the way composites are manufactured through the curing of natural fibres bonded together with bio resin and processed with less energy.

Workshops on the day will cover technical developments in composite manufacture, the manufacture of composites using natural fibre and resins, potential development areas and funding opportunities for R&D development.

The AEM Innovation Network are also hosting the Electroplating Hub Launch at Swinden House in Rotherham on October 26.

AEM Yorkshire is looking to work with the electroplating sector to help meet the new challenges of the current economic climate, increasing legislative pressure and a shift in manufacturing to countries such as China.

Electroplating is the deposition of a metal coating onto an object to give it a desired property such as wear resistance or protection from corrosion.

An introductory event will be held specifically for companies involved in electroplating and associated processes, with Alan McLelland, Director of AEM Yorkshire, describing the scheme and explaining how it can assist companies.

Dr Nick Farmilo from Sheffield Hallam University will also outline the various funding sources and grants available to companies for business development, consultancy, research and knowledge transfer. The half-day event will also include presentations from invited experts on topics relevant to the industry.

News: Martek to launch Renewables Network

By

Rotherham company, Martek Marine, is working on a new project that will provide a range of support and consultancy services to offshore wind farm developers and their supply chain.

The "Renewables Network" is due to be launched later this summer and will host a number of events and offer training opportunities to firms operating in the offshore wind industry. In addition, it will also provide support for firms trying to find private equity funding.

Initially the network will be focussed on the Humber region before expanding to support the wider offshore wind industry.

Paul Luen, CEO at Martek Marine said: "I think for any sector, the availability of valuable finance is always going to be a challenge.

"The situation for offshore wind is slightly different because it could be argued that it's underpinned by government renewable energy targets. That's not to say that funding isn't a challenge, but part of the challenge is to create a competitive supply chain to drive down costs."

Martek is investing a five figure sum in the new network, and is already working with a number of major developers including Eon, Siemens, Centrica and Dong Energy. In addition they are also going to be working with Scandinavian developers to gain valuable insight into how to build up the industry.

The Manvers company is the world leader in safety and environmental monitoring equipment for commercial ships.

News: Dearne Valley breakfast event

By

Over 40 local businesses will attend a free business breakfast this week to help them identify how they can save money by improving their energy efficiency and environmental management.

Organised by the Dearne Valley Business Forum, the key note speaker at the event will be John Healey, local MP for Wentworth and Dearne. With the event coming just three days after the government's emergency Budget, he will be ready to discuss the consequences of this with local businesses. He will talk about the challenge of bringing about a strong economic recovery after the recession.

"We need to ensure that the Dearne Valley area and the businesses in it can work well with public agencies so that they have the best possible basis to be successful in the longer term," said John.

The event will encourage businesses to sign up to reduce their carbon footprint as part of the wider Dearne Valley Eco-Vision, an ambitious and exciting plan to transform the area into the lowest carbon community of its type in the UK.

Representatives of Dearne businesses will hear how the project aims to involve local communities, boost the economy as well as protect and enhance the natural environment of the Valley.

Dearne Valley Eco-Vision Project Manager, Joanne Wehrle, said: "We want all sections of the community in the Dearne Valley to be aware of the impact that their actions are having on the environment and what they can do to minimise this.

"The good news is that often the steps taken to reduce carbon emissions can result in financial savings for householders and businesses. We want to help local residents and businesses to realise these savings and contribute towards the delivery of the Eco-Vision."

The event, on Friday June 25, will be held at the Park Inn Hotel, Manvers, and will run from 8am -10am.

The Advanced Manufacturing Park was the venue for the latest meeting of the E3 Entrepreneurs Forum, a network which exists solely to help entrepreneurs help other entrepreneurs, by making contacts, building relationships, supporting each other, stimulating ideas, winning business together and celebrating success.

Paul Taylor, Director of Creative Space Management which managed the AMP Technology Centre on behalf of Yorkshire Forward said: "The ethos behind all the companies located in the Technology Centre is based around the principles of innovation and entrepreneurship, although the companies are working in the fields of manufacturing and technology these principles are not exclusive to this sector.

News: Executive forum for Rotherham businesses

By

Rotherham Investment and Development Office (RiDO), the council's regeneration arm, has launched an executive forum that encourages company owners in its centres to network and do business with one another. The forum meets for around two hours every month at Wath Golf Club and includes short management workshops and the opportunity to talk to like-minded entrepreneurs, sharing best practice and good ideas. RiDO's Geoff Link said: "One of the greatest challenges for small businesses is taking time out to network, yet in this tough economic climate, the company literally next door may provide a great business opportunity. "Our centres' survival rate for the crucial first three years is virtually 90 per cent, which is well ahead of the national 71 per cent average. The executive forum is just another way that we can help firms grow and succeed." Steve Hartley, publishing director of My Favourite Publications, based at RiDO’s Moorgate Crofts Business Centre, said: "The meetings give you an excellent opportunity to meet others and learn from their experiences, which I found really worthwhile." He discovered another Moorgate company – Voice Telemarketing – could provide exactly the service he was looking for.
