News: Thousands of jobs promised for Waverley site

UK Coal plc, the UK’s biggest producer of coal and the developer of one of Britain’s largest brownfield property estates, and Helical Bar plc announce today a 50/50 joint venture partnership to develop a 660,000 sq ft government office campus at Waverley, Rotherham, on the 300 hectare site of a former coalmine owned by UK Coal. The scheme is estimated to cost some £140 million over a five year development period. The new offices are designed to house government departments being relocated from the South of England and private sector firms that work with them and is part of the larger regeneration scheme for the Waverley site that is expected to create 6,000 jobs.

News: Millers launch new investment scheme

Rotherham United are hoping to attract businesses to invest money into young player’s wages by launching the Invest in a Player scheme. In return, the investors will receive a part of any future transfer. The club are also working in partnership with the local council's town centre team which will see Millers merchandise sold in the town's visitor centre.

News: Templeborough Regeneration

The regeneration of the former site of the Templeborough Steelworks is continuing, with five schemes due to be completed over the next two years. RiDO’s £5m environmentally friendly business centre will be joined by business units within Strategic Sites’ Ignite@Magna and further office / industrial space as part of the Magna 34 development by Jaguar Estates. St Paul’s are creating office space at the Rotherham side of Templeborough with their Phoenix Riverside development, and Ordic Investments have a similar scheme at the Sheffield end.

The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in Rotherham has collected the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Learning. In the five years since the centre was established by Sheffield University and Boeing on the Advanced Manufacturing Park, tangible benefits have been felt in the regional and national economy, with key orders won for this country and jobs secured on the basis of research-led solutions which make companies more competitive.

Home-grown Rotherham company, Martek Marine are celebrating their unimaginable expansion. The company began seven years ago with three employees and £6000 in start up capital in the smallest unit in the RiDO-run Century Business Centre. The award winning company are world leaders in providing marine safety and environmental monitoring systems to the global marine industry. As one of Rotherham's biggest success stories, Martek now employs 40 people at its new purpose built premises in Adwick Park, Manvers and has a turnover of £7m.

The Star has released their list of the Top 100 SME's by pre-tax profit in the region. ASD Lighting tops the Rotherham list and is 5th in the region. News: Firth Rixson sold for £945m

By


Firth Rixson has been acquired by New York-based Oak Hill Capital from global investment group Carlyle in deal worth £945m. The engineering firm which has UK headquarters in Sheffield and a site for engineering rings in Rotherham, generates annual revenues of around £500m, primarily from the sale of products to aerospace engine manufacturers.

News: Sheffield City Region

Two reports on economic development have been released that both make reference to the regeneration of Sheffield. The COMPETE report praises the regeneration of Sheffield and the importance of the new economic masterplan but stresses that continued growth at the current level would still leave it lagging behind other major cities. The report states that there is a £1.1bn shortfall between what Sheffield could produce and what it does produce. The Policy Exchange identify Sheffield as a struggling city and discuss the “wealth gap” that still exists between cities.

News: Botswanan government officials visit Rotherham

Delegates from Botswana visited Rotherham recently to talk to Moorgate Crofts business, In-Tend about supplying the government with e-procurement technology.

The company offers a range of web-based e-tendering products, currently being used by more than 60 higher and further education facilities and local authorities across the UK, including Birmingham University, London Universities, University of Wolverhampton and Cardiff University. The significant international visit highlights Rotherham’s growing business reputation.

News: Bearings developed & produced in Rotherham are helping to harness the power of the Yangtze river

Orkot bearings, developed and produced at manufacturing company Trelleborg Sealing Systems Rotherham, have proved integral to the creation of the world's largest the world's largest hydro electric power station, at the world's largest hydroelectric river dam. The Three Gorges Dam which spans the Yangtze river in China is 1.5 miles wide and the huge power station will have a capapacity of 22,500MW.

News: Right on track

Coverage of the architectural designs for the significant upgrading of Rotherham Railway Station. Award winning international architectural practice Aedas has been chosen to prepare designs for the £2.5 million redevelopment. Incorporating a new passenger lounge, retail space and a travel information centre, the station is set to become a "dramatic and architecturally impressive gateway for visitors and daily users." Work on remodelling the station is expected to take place in 2009-2010 and will be the first phase of a four phase programme of improvements that will include lengthening the platforms, doubling the track access and providing lift access to the platforms. The improvements will upgrade links to the town centre and the catalyst for the redevelopment has been Yorkshire Forward's Urban Renaissance programme.
