News: Newburgh helping to break new ground on breaking ground

By

As development continues on the British built supercar that plans to reach the supersonic speed of 1,000 mph, Rotherham-based Newburgh Engineering has fabricated a vital piece of testing equipment.

High-tech precision engineering sub-contractor Newburgh is a project sponsor and will provide precision parts for the Bloodhound SSC supercar.

Building a car quicker than a fighter jet is not, however, the primary goal of the project. Rather, it is to inspire future generations to take up careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics by showcasing these subjects in the most exciting way possible.

A test rig was required by the team to undertake experiments and find out what effect wheels with up to five tonnes of force rotating at 10,000rpm will have on the ground they are running on and the wheel itself.

A ground test rig was fabricated by Newburgh at their Templeborough facility and taken to possible run locations to carry out the tests.

The Bloodhound SSC supercar is set to run in 2011 at Hakskeen Pan in the Northern Cape region of South Africa.

Using a modular approach, segments of the wheel are constructed so that several configurations can be trialled quickly and efficiently. The section of the wheel is pushed with increasing pressure vertically downwards and the deformation is recorded.

The results will give the team a good view of what the wheel shape will do to the ground and vice versa, helping them to get the optimum shape for a wheel that will spin 166 times a second.

David Greenan, operations director at Newburgh Engineering, said: "This is one of the most exciting design engineering projects in the world to be involved with. We are absolutely thrilled that the rig was produced right here in Rotherham and that it has played a part in finding the perfect location for the world record attempt to take place."

Richard Noble OBE, Bloodhound project director said: "Finding the perfect ground conditions and location is fundamental to the success of this project. This project is a testament to the responsiveness and skill level that resides in UK engineering companies like Newburgh.

"The rig they manufactured allows us to accurately test wheel design profiles so we can be sure of the optimum shape for the World Land Speed Record attempt."

News: Rotherham set for a low carbon future

By

Thanks to technology on the Advanced Manufacturing Park, Rotherham is well placed to respond to the Government's new Composite Strategy.

Composites are increasingly used for their lightweight, super strength properties in aeroplane wings and racing cars and in the UK Composite Strategy document Lord Mandelson estimates that the high-value composites market is currently worth about £1 billion to the British economy.

The UK offshore composite wind turbine blade and aerospace wing market alone could be worth £22 billion by 2020 - highlighting composites' low carbon credentials.

Last November saw the launch of the £4.5 million AMRC Composite Centre, located on the Advanced Manufacturing Park, a collaboration between the University of Sheffield and Boeing.

The facility provides engineers with the capability to undertake manufacturing research for next-generation civil aircraft, automotive, and off-shore energy.

The Centre works with the National Composites Network to provide expertise in product development and process optimisation to companies that wish to enter the composites industry or to expand their business in the sector.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said: "Any modern economy is built on the ability to exploit the opportunities on offer by new and existing high value markets - such as composites.

"Our approach is now to back areas of the economy which have the biggest potential to create wealth and jobs and take advantage of the skills of our people."

The new Composites Strategy explains how Government plans to support British firms involved in manufacturing, utilising and exporting composites and composite technology, with the aim of maintaining the UK's global lead in this growth field.

The strategy will combine with a £22m investment to further advance the development of composite materials. The Government-backed Technology Strategy Board is to manage a unique competition that will see a £5 million prize awarded to British business to develop innovative composite manufacturing techniques for high-performance, high-value products.

Rotherham teacher Jenni Logan attended an afternoon reception last month hosted by Prime Minister Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street.

The celebration for the Teaching Awards "Class of 2009" included exceptional teachers, headteachers, teaching assistants and school governors. Winners of the DCSF Award for Sustainable School of the Year 2009 were also present.

In July, Jenni won the enterprise teaching award category at the northern regional finals of the National Teaching Awards.

Jenni has helped Herringthorpe Infant School achieve two prestigious national awards for enterprise, including becoming the first infant school ever to receive the Warwick Platinum Award for Excellence in Enterprise Education.

Gordon Brown said: "You never forget a good teacher and the Teaching Awards recognises that important sentiment. The professionals that I welcome to this event have had a major impact on their pupils and students, and have inspired those in their schools to achieve. I congratulate them all for their creativity, their passion and their professionalism."

Caroline Evans, chief executive of the Teaching Awards said: "Our winners change children's lives forever and, without them, schools would be very different places. They are terrific ambassadors for education who deserve recognition and who remind us to value all that is good in schools today."

Rotherham is acknowledged nationally and internationally as a centre for excellence in enterprise teaching and learning, developed through the enterprise education initiative Rotherham Ready.

This was the third year that a Rotherham teacher won the top prize in the enterprise category, showing that the borough is at the forefront of innovation and excellence for enterprise teaching and learning.

News: Apprentices gain insight into world class engineering

By

The nine apprentices on the "New Era" Apprenticeship programme with Brinsworth Training in Rotherham were given an insight into specialist engineering techniques when they visited DavyMarkham in Sheffield recently.

The company, which designs, fabricates, machines and installs heavy and complex engineering components and assemblies for the civil engineering, metals, mining and quarrying and power generation industries, gave the Apprentices an in-depth tour around its site. The tour included services, fabrication, assembly and the machine shop, which gave the apprentices an insight into the importance of tight tolerances, even on huge components.

The "New Era" programme, which has been pioneered by Rotherham-based Newburgh Engineering and Sheffield-based Air Accessories, is designed to create a highly skilled breed of young engineers.

Peter Kerfoot, training supervisor for DavyMarkham said: "This was a great opportunity for the Apprentices to gain an insight into the heavy engineering sector - many of them had never seen workpieces of this size and found it fascinating! We were keen to show how, even on this scale, it is really important to be precise and accurate."

Vincent Middleton, managing director of Newburgh Engineering, said: "Company visits are an important part of the "New Era" programme.

"Throughout the 40 week course, we have a number of visits planned to some of the region's most innovative engineering companies in order to give the apprentices a taste of what it is like to work in this hugely exciting industry."

The Apprentices will visit Rotherham company AESSEAL and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham before the end of the year, to give them an understanding into all sectors of engineering from heavy industries to nuclear, aerospace and the defence sector.

News: Another global order for Martek

By

Rotherham-based Martek Marine has announced another international order for their MariNOx product.

The Manvers company is the world leader in safety and environmental monitoring equipment for commercial ships.

Major international tanker operator National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) has announced plans for reducing the energy consumption of its fleet by 28% and part of its plans include the installation of Martek Marine's MariNOx engine emissions monitoring system.

NITC currently has 42 oceangoing crude oil tankers in operation with a further 22 newbuild vessels due for delivery between 2010 and 2013.

Speaking at the ME Ship Tech 2009 conference in Dubai, Mohammad Souri, Chairman and Managing Director of NITC, said that climate change was the greatest challenge facing the world today.

He went on to advocate promoting broad participation in voluntary measures and that there was a vast potential for improvements in operational efficiency, fleet management, traffic control, cargo handling and energy efficiency.

Mr Souri announced that by installing MariNOx on new vessels, NITC would be able to tune the engines to deliver greater fuel savings.

Because the MariNOx system monitors actual emissions levels it allows the vessels to prove that even after adjusting the engine settings they are still operating within international compliance limits.

Following a trial, NITC Technical Director, Mr Mayahi, commented: "It is the policy of National Iranian Tanker Company to adopt "Best Practice" across our entire operations and be an innovator in embracing leading new advanced technologies.

"NITC have chosen to install the MariNOx NOx/C02 emissions monitoring & engine efficiency optimisation system as a statement of this policy."

News: Latest Corus financial results

By

Tata Steel, the owner of Corus, has posted a loss of 27.07 billion rupees ($584.6 million) in the July-September period, compared with a profit of 47.72 billion rupees a year earlier.

The results were affected by actions taken to restructure the business in Europe and especially in the UK were over 1,000 jobs were placed at risk at Corus sites in Rotherham.

The group also claimed that there was also an impact because of the absence in the UK of government-funded short-time work schemes.

Tata Steel Europe MD & CEO Mr. Kirby Adams said: "We took timely action during the exceptionally difficult first-half trading period, and I am pleased to report that the second half of this financial year will look entirely different.

"Steel demand in Europe and North America started to recover from exceptionally low levels during Q2. While we expect that trend to continue, the recovery remains fragile, particularly in the UK and in construction markets. But we believe that we are now over the worst in Europe and can look forward to a return to positive financial performance."

Recent press reports indicated that around 165 of the jobs at risk in South Yorkshire could be saved following a recent upturn in orders.

News: New housing development in Swinton

By

A development of seven accessible homes has been officially opened in Swinton, Rotherham.

Rotherham firm Bramall Construction were contracted by local housing association Guinness Northern Counties to create the homes in partnership with Rotherham Council's Neighbourhood Investment Team.

The seven properties comprise two three-bed homes for sale and five two-bed bungalows for rent. Two of the bungalows are designed for people with general needs but limited mobility while the remaining three are all fully wheelchair accessible.

The project, on a former Council housing site, was managed by the authority's Neighbourhood Investment Team as part of the local Housing Market Renewal programme. It was built by Guinness Northern Counties with the support of a grant from the Government's Homes and Communities Agency.

As well as purpose-built, good quality homes designed around their needs, residents will also be able to enjoy low fuel bills thanks to the inclusion of solar panels on all of the properties.

John Ray, Head of Guinness Northern Counties East Region, said: "On behalf of Guinness Northern Counties I would like to thank Rotherham's Neighbourhood Investment Team for their assistance and support at every stage of this development and the Project Partnering Team made up of external consultants and the contractors Bramall Construction, for providing a scheme of such high standards.

"We have actually been complimented by local residents, both verbally and by letter, on the way in which Bramall's have managed to keep the noise and disruption to a minimum throughout the construction process."

Local ward councillor John Doyle, who is also Cabinet Member for Health & Social Care, said: "The teams that have worked on this for the last year have been fabulous and achievements like this are happening all over the borough.

"We all should be proud of the type of homes we are providing for our residents, we're building decent homes for decent folk to live in, and that's something Rotherham should be celebrating!"

News: Rotherham Ready to help new teachers

By

Rotherham Ready has developed a new programme to equip trainee teachers to develop enterprise through the curriculum from the start of their careers.

The innovative enterprise education project has received funding from the European Regional Development Fund to work with Sheffield Hallam University to develop training modules that introduce early years, primary and secondary teachers to enterprise while they are still studying.

45 primary teachers and 72 secondary trainee teachers from Sheffield Hallam University have taken part in new "enterprise teaching and learning enhancements" where they learn how to develop enterprise through the curriculum.

Catherine Brentnall, Rotherham Ready Project Officer, said: "We are delighted about the funding from ERDF which will enable us to continue and develop innovative ways of creating a culture of enterprise in education. The "Inspire ITT" programme we have developed and piloted at Sheffield Hallam University means that we can instil enterprise into the minds of new teachers and switch them on to its impact at the start of their careers.

"We have been working for the last four years to create an enterprising culture in Rotherham and the town is now internationally recognised as a Centre of Excellence for its enterprise teaching and learning. The funding means that we can strategically embed enterprise into the fabric of what teachers learn beyond the borough now too.

"It is really exciting that once qualified, these teachers will be taking their enterprise skills and enthusiasm across the country. So while the idea was born in Rotherham and the teacher training students will visit Rotherham Schools to see enterprising work in action, the outcome will be that they will then be educating children across Great Britain and helping to foster an enterprising culture for the future."

Tom Riordan, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Forward, said: "I am delighted that Yorkshire Forward funding has contributed to such a key milestone in the economic development of Sheffield. A twice-hourly service to London, and vice-versa, means that Sheffield will now be able to compete on a level playing field with other cities in the UK.

"Until now Sheffield has been the only major English city with just an hourly service to London, so investments like this one will provide a major shot in the arm for the city, creating jobs and boosting the economy.

"As well as the obvious financial benefit of twice as many Sheffield to London passengers using Sheffield Station, we also expect to see an additional £2million to £3million pounds being generated annually in the local economy in jobs and investment."

Transport Secretary Andrew Adonis said: "I'm delighted that passengers will benefit from a more frequent service, with twice the number of trains running between Sheffield and London.

"This initiative is an excellent example of local agencies working with the train operator to improve services to meet local need."

News: Enterprise Week call to Rotherham entrepreneurs

By

To coincide with Global Entrepreneurship Week, the newly formed Rotherham Enterprise Board is outlining ways to boost levels of enterprise across the already enterprising borough.

Funded by the European Regional Development Fund and made up of Rotherham entrepreneurs who want to give something back to the community, the Board is steering the promotion of enterprise and ensuring the right support is out there for businesses and budding entrepreneurs.

A key event will be a Rotherham Enterprise Show, something currently missing locally but which budding entrepreneurs in Sheffield and other Yorkshire towns benefit from.

And the Board is giving an open invitation to existing entrepreneurs to join and throw their weight and experience behind its efforts. A "Mentor Bank" is already under way and should be up and running in January, with successful and active business people offering support to existing and new businesses.

Other projects include a new website and a Rotherham version of TV's Dragons' Den. The website will be an easy-to-use and up-to-date website, providing an invaluable local resource, while the Dragon's Den will help mentors find out about investment opportunities among Rotherham businesses and, if they wish, invest to bring these to fruition.

Board chairman John Wainwright, of Executek, said: "We know that many people dream of running their own business. But the prospect can be daunting, so we're working to ensure there is help at hand.

"The Board is new, but we have made significant progress in 2009, and 2010 will see the pace of activity quicken up and the hard work continue. We've much activity planned and the consistent support from Board members has enabled the achievements to date.

"We're focused on identifying key strategies and actions to ensure an increase in the rates of successful business start-ups and growth in Rotherham, something we'll be monitoring very closely."

News: AES in the USA

By

An American subsidiary of Rotherham manufacturers, AESSEAL is benefiting from the business decisions made by the company back in the UK.

A feature in the Greater Knoxville Business Journal highlights how the Rotherham company's commitment to research and development and its customer relationships is instrumental to seeing it through the recession and setting it up for the recovery.

The company is the world's fourth largest mechanical seal business with a global footprint in 33 countries and the Tennessee subsidiary was established in 1992 by Tom Grove.

They specialise in the design and manufacture of mechanical seals, bearing protectors and environmental control systems for process equipment, maximising reliability and protecting the environment from leakage.

A dedicated move into finding new opportunities during the recession has resulted in targeting the minerals, mining and energy sectors. The move is working in the U.S. as the company recently received a significant contract from PotashCorp. for its New Brunswick mine in Canada.

Grove told the Journal: "We custom designed products for several major projects in the mining industry. We set up product so these mines will save millions of gallons of water and this will significantly reduce the energy required in their evaporation process."

"For us the recession has been full of opportunities. As a relatively new entrant into the market in the U.S., we are constantly challenging the status quo with prospective customers and trying to overcome their resistance to change."

News: Revised plans for Waverley submitted

By

Revised plans have been submitted for the Waverley New Community in Rotherham. The 741 acre brownfield site, owned by UK COAL, covers an area bigger than Sheffield city centre and will be transformed into a bustling town of 9,000 people.

UK COAL's property arm, Harworth Estates submitted an outline planning application to Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council in August 2008 for a sustainable, high density, mixed use community, including 3890 houses, community facilities and green areas.

Following the submission of the original planning application, the masterplan has been revised through a series of monthly workshops with RMBC officers as well as through the RMBC Steering Group, RMBC Design Panel and various meetings with ATLAS - the Housing and Communities Agency's large application advisors to ensure that the scheme addresses a wide range of issues.

As a consequence revisions to the planning application were submitted to the Council in October 2009.

Changes made to the multi-million pound scheme include design improvements, inclusion of allotments and modifications to the transport interchange. Live / work units are now incorporated and new documents have also been submitted as part of the scheme.

The revised proposals will be on public display for information and comment in the AMP Technology Centre from 12 noon to 8pm on Monday November 23 2009.

News: Rotherham students RISE to the challenge

By

Rotherham is again leading the way in enterprise education with the development of a new venture that engages young people at risk of becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training).

Youngsters will be engaged in active and outdoor enterprise learning and work together to grow and make things to sell at a market stall at Christmas.

The project is designed to develop the young people's enterprise skills, raise aspirations and help them build the confidence and ambition to make a positive progression after school.

Students from Aston Comprehensive, Clifton: A Community Arts School, Dinnington Comprehensive, St Bernard's Catholic High School and Wingfield Business and Enterprise College will meet for the first time this month to share and develop plans for the enterprise.

The project is funded by the European Social Fund and has been developed by Rotherham Ready and local TV garden design entrepreneur Lee Bestall, from Inspired Gardens.

Catherine Brentnall, Rotherham Ready Project Officer, said: "RISE is about giving young people who are disengaged from the mainstream curriculum a real challenge.

"The students involved in RISE are being young entrepreneurs – coming up with ideas, making decisions, taking risks, making mistakes – but developing their skills and ambitions along the way.

"Getting five schools to work together in this way is very unusual – it's another first for enterprise education in Rotherham!"
