News: Man of Steel brought to life

By

The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing has completed production of a two metre model of a proposed landmark sculpture for the Sheffield city region.

Last year, planning permission was granted conditionally for the 27.3m high art installation based on work by local sculptor Steve Mehdi, on a former land fill site in Rotherham.

Mehdi was introduced to the AMRC for help with producing a large model of the Man of Steel to raise awareness of the project.

The model is made from polyurethane resin board, a material normally used for creating prototypes and models of automotive and aerospace structures. This was sculpted at the AMRC Composite Centre on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham on its CMS five-axis machining centre, using cutting tools from Sheffield-based Technicut.

The assembled model will now be given a stainless metal coating, and mounted on a two metre column made by Sheffield-based Tool and Steel Products.

John Halfpenny, manufacturing engineer at the AMRC with Boeing Composite Centre, managed production of the model Man of Steel. He said: "This was a totally different project to our usual work in the Composite Centre – it's nothing like what we've done before. But it's good to work on a project that's potentially going to be in Sheffield for the next 200 years."

Steve Mehdi, sculptor, said: "This project honours the past and embraces the future, bringing together the heritage of the old industries and signposting the new technologies of the Sheffield city region.

"These rapid developments in design technology and manufacture are led by the University of Sheffield AMRC in Rotherham, so I am delighted that the AMRC has used its expertise to create this version of the Man of Steel."

The finished model will be on show at the AMRC during the Global Manufacturing Festival in April, which commemorates the centenary of stainless steel's discovery by Sheffield metallurgist Harry Brearley. It will also be exhibited at the Magna Science Centre in Rotherham and Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield.

The Man of Steel will also play an important role in promoting education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem). "Education experts across the region are working with the Man of Steel project team to develop curriculum material across all key stages," Mehdi says. "The AMRC Man of Steel will appear at various exhibitions throughout the year, promoting our industrial heritage, the new technologies and Stem education for the future."

News: Xeros Joins EarthShare to raise awareness

By

Xeros Inc., a subsidiary of innovative Rotherham company, Xeros Ltd, has parntered with EarthShare, a US federation that supports the country's most respected environmental organizations, in a bid to boost exports of its "virtually waterless" washing machine.

The Leeds University spin-out, based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP), has developed a patented system using a unique method of special polymer beads rather than the usual large amounts of fresh water to clean clothes. Instead a small amount of water is added to loosen clothing stains and activate the beads.

As Xeros enters the United States market, the company will work with EarthShare to introduce its patented cleaning technology and educate people about the importance of water and energy conservation. Xeros will provide support for EarthShare's mission of environmental stewardship, while EarthShare will support Xeros' sustainability efforts through consumer education and outreach.

Bill Westwater, Chief Executive Officer of Xeros Ltd, said: "Xeros is proud to be partnering with EarthShare to continue to build awareness of our business and brand.

"EarthShare supports America's most responsible environmental and conservation charities. We're honored to be working with EarthShare to create a better world for all of us to live in."

At the end of last year, Xeros secured its first deal with a US hotel when the 518-room Hyatt Regency Reston in Virginia installed the eco-friendly commercial scale Xeros washing machine.

The Xeros system, that uses up to 70-90% less water than traditional washing machines, was installed at a first site in America last August, at Sterling Linen Services, a high-quality linen processing and rental service for area hotels, hospitals and restaurants, in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Kal Stein, president and CEO at EarthShare, added: "We were impressed by Xeros' mission to introduce a product that will help commercial and private users reduce their water and energy consumption, and by their commitment to supporting critical environmental issues.

"We are grateful for their support and excited to work with them toward their goal of introducing a product that can have a positive impact on the environment."

News: Eton to build new town centre office development

By

Rotherham-based Eton Construction has secured a contract to build a new landmark office building on the edge of the town centre for J Parkinson & Sons.

The Wellgate contractor is continuing to expand its portfolio and will construct a purpose built office and workshop for the undertakers, who at present occupy an adjacent older property on Wellgate.

J Parkinson & Sons was established in 1875 and today the fifth generation of Parkinson funeral directors operate the business. It has now outgrown its current site.

Adjacent to the former Wellington boot pub, which now operates as a music academy, construction recently began on the site for the three-story building which has been designed to fit in with the surrounding area as it lies within the town's conservation area.

When completed, it will provide 350 sq m of floorspace with an office and reception plus workshop and preparation space.

Cain Green, commercial director of Eton Construction (pictured, centre), said: "We are pleased to have been awarded the contract and pleased to have formed a partnership with J Parkinson & Sons, a long established company within the borough. The town centre will no doubt benefit from the investment in a new development."

Established 2010, Eton was trading as Harris Construction (Yorkshire) Ltd as a residential developer. Following a management reshuffle the firm rebranded as Eton Construction Ltd, to concentrate on commercial contracts. The first major contract was the refurbishment of Swinton Grange nursing home, Swinton.

Other contracts include internal fitout work to an industrial unit in Meadowbank and an office refurbishment and extension for a solicitor in the town.

Cain added: "Being a small company we are very competitive in similar sized projects and we provide a full professional service working closely with our clients at all times, with the main aim of producing a quality finished project."

News: Ree-Cycle in the frame for business success

By

An enterprising Rotherham man has turned his passion for classic BMX bicycles into a business by launching Ree-Cycle, Rotherham's premier second hand bike store.

Based on the Barbot Hall industrial estate, the environmentally-friendly business has been established by Glynne Ensor and his wife Keeley with free help from Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce.

Ree-Cycle provides quality second hand and vintage bikes and specialises in new and reconditioned, BMX, Lowrider and dirt bikes as well as stunt scooters and beachcruisers.

Glynne Ensor, owner of Ree-Rcycle, said: "Since we opened our doors in September, we have received a really positive response with many people saying we have struck on a great idea.

"The bikes we sell are put together by hand with care and our customers really like that personal touch. The bonus is that we are helping the environment by using parts and bikes that would otherwise have been destroyed."

The startup business received assistance from the Chamber through the Regional Enterprise Programme (funded by ERDF), in the form of marketing tips from Business Advisor Jav Khan.

Keeley Ensor, director at Ree-Cycle, said: "Jav explained the ways in which we could get the Ree-Cycle name out there, using our website, our Facebook page and Google. He also steered us towards some different avenues we hadn't considered, such as getting in touch with the Bolehills BMX track in Sheffield and using online biking forums to generate interest.

“As we have created a show area in our workshop, Jav advised us on making it customer friendly without losing the welcoming feel which has been generated by people dropping in to look around and chat about biking. You can sometimes feel alone when starting a business, so the free help from the Chamber has been really welcome."

News: Gala Tent seeks new installers

By

Growing Rotherham business, Gala Tent is looking to expand its distributor and installer network across the region.

The company is the UK's largest supplier of marquees and gazebos, exporting across Europe and to the US. They moved into new 53,000 sq ft headquarters at Fairfield Park in Manvers in 2011.

Over the past 13 years, Gala Tent has helped dozens of hire businesses to set up throughout the country, which often starts with individuals who have bought a Gala Tent for an event and spotted the opportunity to run their own business.Gala Tent is looking for new partners, particularly in the Yorkshire region, but also UK-wide to serve growing demand from customers.

Jason Mace, managing director of Gala Tent, said: "We have some great success stories of Gala Tent hire companies setting up and expanding rapidly, even in the tougher economic climate of the past few years.

"Entertaining at home is becoming more popular which means people are extending their home into the garden with a marquee. There are also some great opportunities to hire out to pubs and clubs, due to the new legislation regarding live music. Weddings are a very lucrative area too and for many of our customers this is their main income stream.

"We are looking for more Gala Tent hire companies, especially in Yorkshire and the North, where there are some huge opportunities. We provide all the support for a new business starting out and an extensive, high quality product range. This means the payback time is quick and setting up a hire business involves a relatively small investment to get it off the ground."

David Blackett, owner of Sawtry Marquees in Cambridgeshire, had bought a Gala Tent for a party and started hiring it out on a part-time basis, whilst working a full time job. He packed in his job so he could concentrate on his marquee hire business.

David Blackett said: "I really wanted to set up my own business and Gala Tent provided a great opportunity. It was not about the money but the freedom that self employment offered me, along with the fact that I really enjoy providing marquee solutions for customers' events."

News: Acorn grows into new Rotherham premises

By

Acorn Industrial Services Ltd is celebrating the New Year with the opening of a new £1.25m central distribution centre in Rotherham.

The growing company is one of the largest power transmission distributors in the country and supplies bearings, power transmissions and linear systems to a global customer base.

The move across the borough sees three Masborough warehouses relocate into a single facility at Hellaby.

Acorn's 80 strong team worked day and night over the holiday period to move over 1 million stocked items and relocate the former Optare site to ensure they were ready for business in the New Year.

Martin Povey, financial director at Acorn, said: "We're absolutely delighted with the new premises. Acorn are now more conveniently located for national and international distribution channels, enabling us to fulfil orders even more effectively and doubling our space will literally open the door to further growth, increases in stock lines and more new jobs for local people."
Des Spillings, sales director at Acorn, praised staff saying: "It has been an enormous undertaking to move premises, but it is with thanks to our dedicated workforce, who sacrificed their holidays and worked tirelessly through the Christmas period, that we were able to complete the move in such a short space of time."

A £700,000 injection of funding from Barclays enabled Acorn to purchase the new 40,000 sq ft premises that is twice the size of the existing sites combined and more than capable of housing the company's £4m worth of stock alongside all head office functions.

The business has achieved year on year growth for the past ten years and reported a turnover of £17.4m in the year to 31 December 2011, up from £14.3m a year earlier.

News: Temperance Bar set to be added to Rotherham's retail mix

By

A retro Temperance Bar where customers can enjoy Sarsaparilla and other special cordials could open soon in Rotherham town centre.

The plans have been outlined by the enterprising owners of The Whistle Stop Sweet Shop in the Imperial Buildings as part of the next stage of growth for the company.

Plans include moving next door to take over a unit twice the size of its exiting one. The new space will be used to house an expanded sweet shop, a sweet manufacturing area and a Temperance Bar.

Popular in the North of England in the 19th century, the bars were established in conjunction with the Temperance Society who advocated a moderate approach to life and warned against excessive alcohol consumption.

Kara Chapman, owner of The Whistle Stop Sweet Shop, said: "Over the past two years we have constantly been asked by our customers to find and stock Sarsaparilla, as they remembered Rotherham's three Sarsaparilla Bars. We sourced the Sarsaparilla cordial from the only Temperance Bar left in England. We have been stocking this cordial range in our shop for the last six months, and the response has been fantastic."

The store opened in October 2010 offering a huge range of quality traditional, retro and modern sweets. It is hoping to access new financial support through the "Portas pilot" scheme operated by the council to help current retailers undertake significant business development projects.
Funding from UK Steel Enterprise's Kickstart Fund has also allowed the shop to launch an e-commerce website which has proved a springboard for growth.

The Kickstart Fund is a business finance scheme that provides grants of up to £500 to start-up businesses to purchase essential equipment and or services that can get them trading.

UK Steel Enterprise is a subsidiary of Tata Steel with a main investment fund that provides business finance in amounts from £25,000 up to £750,000 to companies in South Yorkshire and other areas affected by changes in the steel industry.

Kara added: "I think the website has given people confidence in us as a business. They find us on-line and then come down to see the shop. We have over 600 individual jars of sweets but it is our special gift packs that people look for on-line. We specialise in unusual gifts and when people come in the shop their faces glow at what they see on offer."

Allan Wood, regional executive for UK Steel Enterprise says the business has built itself a great platform for growth; "It is very customer focussed and with the combination of retail and manufacturing I can see this truly niche business going places in the future."

News: Rotherham firms combine to research the use of bio-composites in the automotive industry

By

The potential use of biocomposites, such as hemp and cashew nut resin, to make bodywork panels for cars is being researched by engineers based at the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham.

The £100,000 ELCOMAP (Environmentally friendly lightweight composite materials for aerodynamic body panels) project will research the potential alternatives to composite technologies currently in use such as carbon fibre and epoxy resin systems. The technology has the potential to revolutionise the production of low volume specialist components for high performance vehicles.

Project partners include Performance Engineered Solutions (PES) Ltd, TEKS UK Ltd and the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing.

The project is supported by a £50,000 grant from the Niche Vehicle Network. Robert Anderson, the Niche Vehicle R&D Programme Manager said: "The NVN systems funding programme is playing a vital role in supporting UK engineering innovation. In the global automotive sector, highly creative and dynamic niche businesses are sometimes overlooked, and our three month funding packages worth up to £50,000, provide important support to R&D projects such as the ELCOMAP project."

Performance Engineered Solutions (PES) Ltd is leading the project, and design director, Dan Fleetcroft added: "This is an exciting project, both in terms of the untapped potential for biocomposites in the automotive industry, and having the opportunity to work on the project with key strategic partner organisations such as TEKS and the AMRC.

"Annual production revenue in the UK composite sector currently amounts to around £1.1 billion, about £0.4 billion of which is exported. UK demand for composites is expected to grow rapidly over the next 5 years to £2bn in 2015. The UK growth rates for glass fibre (9% pa) and carbon fibre (17% pa) composites are faster than those forecast for the UK and the rest of Europe, and match or exceed those of emerging markets."

PES Ltd, grew out of AMP-based Bromley Technologies Ltd and specialises in enhancing the performance of components, products and systems by delivering integrated engineering thinking alongside innovative design, materials, manufacturing and testing technologies.

Roland Krain, General Manager TEKS SARL Ltd added: "According to some predictions 80% of the world carbon fibre production will be taken up with the production of aircraft parts by such companies as Boeing and Airbus. In such cases carbon fibre composites will become more costly with increased production lead times.

"The biocomposite systems being researched in this project will offer a viable alternative to such carbon fibre composites with the added benefit of the biocomposite being green."

TEKS is a privately owned French SME actively involved in process design and optimisation, project management, training and technology exploitation.

Dr Tim Swait, research engineer at the AMRC Composite Centre, said: "There are a number of areas we need to investigate before these biocomposites can go into commercial production. We will research how we can increase the concentration of fibres to give material properties that are at least a match for synthetic composites, and how we design the lay-up for a biocomposite component to optimise its performance.

"We're also investigating the use of other techniques to improve the energy efficiency of composites manufacturing, such as microwave curing."

A state-of-the-art facility allows the AMRC Composite Centre to provide a full range of design, manufacturing, assembly and structural testing services for advanced composite materials.

The award follows the recent announcement that a grant has been secured for an advanced manufacturing "proving factory" in Rotherham to develop the mass production of new low carbon technologies for the vehicles of tomorrow.

News: AMP set for momentous year

By

Looking back on 2012, Simon Spode, marketing manager at the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham, tells Rothbiz about a significant year for the UK's premier advanced manufacturing technology park, and also looks forward to 2013, a year that is set to be equally momentous.

"When the AMP concept was first muted back in the late 1990's, the idea was for it to bring together world-class research and development activities, alongside high quality manufacturing operations on a single site.

"It has taken a number of years, with some ups and downs, but the AMP is now at the stage where it is really fulfilling the original ethos, along with the added element of helping address the skills issues that are prevalent within advanced manufacturing industries.

"The two planned Rolls-Royce facilities at the AMP were (and continue to be) the most high-profile developments to date on the Park. Construction of the Advanced Blade Casting Facility begun last summer following an official ground-breaking ceremony undertaken by the Business Secretary, Dr Vince Cable. The construction phase is due for completion in summer 2013, with the facility operational and producing up to 100,000 aero engine turbine blades by mid-2014.

"The second Rolls-Royce facility, Project PoWeR, is planned to manufacture and assemble large pressure vessels for the next generation of nuclear power stations. The precise timetable for the construction of the new facility is still unclear as Rolls-Royce continues to develop its plans for the civil nuclear manufacturing facility in line with the needs of its customers.

"Further construction is underway at the AMP with the development of the University of Sheffield AMRC with Boeing's facilities for the AMRC Training Centre (pictured) and their new UK centre of excellence for industrial design, prototyping and structural testing.
"The Training Centre will provide the practical and academic skills that manufacturing companies need to compete globally from autumn 2013, allowing students to develop from apprenticeship through to doctorate and MBA levels, plus officering continuing professional development.

"The AMP Technology Centre [the park's business incubation centre] now boasts over 75% occupancy of the lettable space, with all the workshop space currently occupied. In addition to providing a base for in excess of 30 companies, the Centre has provided a venue for a number of events for organisations including; Deloitte, Rolls-Royce, UKTI, and Yorkshire Business Gold.

"Plans are currently being finalised by landowners Harworth Estates to assess the potential development platforms across the remaining AMP site and including additional land which would take the full size of the development up to around 150 acres. This includes the development of a second phase of light industrial / hybrid units similar to the existing Evolution @ the AMP units, which were fully occupied in 2012.

"At the same time the wider Waverley development, of which the AMP is a key part continues to grow, with 15 families already moved into the first phase of housing as construction carries on."
And looking ahead to 2013, Simon continues: "The AMP has always been a hot-bed for the development of new technologies and manufacturing processes and 2013 will see at least two of these technologies set to gain greater impact in their respective markets.

"Xeros Ltd is focused on bringing to market a variety of polymer based cleaning applications that dramatically reduce cost and environment impact. The company now have their laundry systems installed at commercial laundry operations in both the UK & US and aim to further increase this penetration of the laundry markets in 2013.

"Icetope Ltd is due to launch a revolutionary solution which is set to dramatically reduce power consumption in IT data centres by cooling servers at the source of the heat: the component level.

"It is not only new technologies that are being developed at the AMP, but current technologies and processes are being further developed to meet new market needs. Examples include work by The AMRC, TWI and and Fripp Design.

"Despite the tough financial conditions experienced by all, a number of the AMP's companies are bucking this trend. These include X:cel Superturn who beat rivals from America and Asia to secure a three-year deal to make precision gaskets and sealing rings for operations in the U.S., Brazil, Scandinavia and Singapore.

"2013 will also see the AMP host this year's Global Manufacturing Festival (GMF): Sheffield, with the conference and trade show taking place at the AMRC. The event will be themed around key manufacturing sectors such as aerospace, renewable energy and civil nuclear, with speakers and visitors expected from around the world. The AMP will also be hosting events linked to the 100 years of Stainless Steel celebrations this year.

"The success of the AMP is down to a combination of the visionaries that created and backed the original concept of an advanced manufacturing technology park, at a time when financial services and other business support industries were in fashion, and the partner organisations that have worked together and maintained their faith in the Park's concept throughout the years.

"The AMP will continue to be home throughout 2013 to new products, technologies and skills, and maintain its role as an asset to advanced manufacturing industries regionally, nationally and internationally."

News: Polish entrepreneur all smiles in Rotherham

By

A Polish entrepreneur is set to grow his business in Rotherham by offering more affordable dental and medical care overseas.

Krzysztof (Christopher) Suski from Warsaw has benefited from the support of the ERDF-funded project called Growth and Prosperity in Rotherham (Soft Landing Zone) and established B & T Solutions Ltd, based in RiDO's Moorgate Crofts business centre.

The project helps overseas companies looking to establish operations in the UK, explore the UK market or to use the UK as a base for further European activities. It also helps local companies to grow by boosting their exports.

The Health and Travel side of B & T Solutions Ltd will enable UK residents to access medical and cosmetic dental treatment at approved clinics in Poland for less than the same treatment would cost in this country.

With extensive connections with high quality Polish dental clinics, arranging the surgery, flights, transfers and accommodation are part of a complete package. In the UK, dental services are far more expensive than in Poland and, in some cases, the cost of overseas treatment will be reimbursed by the NHS.

The company will also be offering advice to UK businesses which are looking to set up in Poland, providing support with company registration, recruitment of staff, location of workspace and advice on legal and tax issues.

Christopher Suski, managing director of B & T Solutions, said: "I decided to start my business in Rotherham because of the support available through RiDO and I have been really pleased with the advice I've had on registering the company, taxation and market research through them.

"Moorgate Crofts Business Centre is a great place for BT Solutions to be based and I hope it will grow rapidly and enable me to create new jobs in the South Yorkshire area.

"As the UK has some of the highest costs in Europe for dental care, my aim is to make specialist dental treatments more affordable, whilst giving UK residents the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful sights and culture of Poland."

News: Reflex secure airport contract

By

Rotherham-based Reflex Systems has successfully installed safety and security at the new £11m passenger terminal redevelopment at Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBIA).

The leading independent security specialist based in Hellaby has worked with LBIA since 2005 and the bulk of the latest project was taken up with upgrades. CCTV has been upgraded for the entire site in passenger and airside areas, while the access control was overhauled.

The new solution includes the installation of the very latest access control systems, providing a high level of traceability as well as sophisticated management information and auditing tools. Enhancements were also made to CCTV in car parks and other external areas.

Tim Beynon, Head of Airport Development and Planning at Leeds Bradford Airport said: "Reflex understands our environments and the demands upon us. As a border control authority we have to work to strict government guidelines and if systems fail for any reason, our airport closes and the knock-on effects can be significant both commercially and from a public perception perspective.

"Partnering with a company like Reflex is critical to the smooth day-to-day running of the airport. And we have been pleased with how the relationship has developed into a genuine partnership over the years."

Steve Ward, operations director at Reflex, added: "As with all airports, there was a clear need for best in class safety and security systems, in respect of strategic border controls. Additionally, enhanced general security and safe provisions for the millions of passengers who pass through LBA every year would bring the airport up-to-date with the latest technologies and make it one of the best equipped transport hubs in the country.

"Reflex contributes regularly to the planning and maintenance regime at the airport, so our contract represents much more of a partnering relationship than a traditional supplier-client relationship. We feed our sector expertise into the management system at LBIA and for their part they keep us abreast of the latest national and global changes that require action in terms of systems and planning."

LBIA is one of the UK's fastest growing airports. The redeveloped terminal was officially opened in December and includes a new larger departure lounge, a range of new food and beverage units, a major walk-through Tax and Duty Free store and additional retail brands.

News: Local MP looking for an apprentice

By

John Healey, the MP for Wentworth and Dearne, is advertising for an apprentice administrator and caseworker to work in his busy constituency office in Wath.

The former Shadow Health Secretary is working with Dearne Valley College, who will provide training for a NVQ in Business Administration.

Employed full time for a year, the apprentice will face tasks such as enquiry responses, communications and liaison with relevant parties, to important aspects of the work, such as dealing with matters on the MP's behalf and managing his diary. The MP is very keen to promote employment through schemes such as Apprenticeships across the region, which has been hard-hit by the recession.

Mr Healey said: "I am sure an Apprentice will be a great addition to the constituency team and help me in the work I do as local MP. This shows that Apprenticeships aren't just for people who want to train as plumbers or electricians – there are Apprenticeships out there that allow young people to take a first step in a wide range of different careers.

"Nationally youth unemployment is touching 1 million and in the constituency the number of young people out of work for at least a year has more than tripled in the last 12 months.

"I want to encourage more employers to offer apprenticeships and I want the Government to do more to help them do so."

The College continues to build an extensive portfolio of success stories of placing young, talented individuals into local businesses to be trained on-site in a specific industry, benefitting both the Apprentice and the business. The College deal with a broad range of Apprenticeships including IT, Health and Social Care, Hairdressing, Retail, Team Leading and Accounting, among many others.

News: Cepac on acquisition trail

By

Cepac, a leading UK producer of corrugated and retail-ready packaging based in Rotherham, has confirmed that it has completed two acquisitions and reached an agreement on a third.

Founded in 1999, Cepac has established one of the largest and most technologically advanced corrugated packaging plants in the world in Manvers.

A deal has been finalised for DS Smith's Darlington operation, formerly known as SCA Branded Packaging. It had been pending approval from the European Commission, which was finalised on 19 December 2012.

DS Smith had to dispose of the business as a condition of the European Commission's approval of its £1.4bn acquisition of SCA Group's packaging business.

Cepac has also reached a further agreement with DS Smith to acquire its Specialty Packaging plant in Rawcliffe Bridge, East Yorkshire.

A third deal sees Cepac acquire point of sale display manufacturer, Screenprint Doncaster Limited.

The deals are expected to compliment the existing plant at Brookfields Park and see the company, which is part of the Yemen-based HSA Group, considerably expand its operations to meet increasing demand for high quality packaging across a range of sectors.

Rod Ainslie, managing director at Cepac, said: "Having built up Cepac over 13 years, we have established a strong position in the industry, serving a solid base of FMCG customers. As we welcome our new colleagues and customers, our priority for the immediate future is involvement, communication and clear direction.

"The addition of the former DS Smith operations in conjunction with Screenprint Doncaster will enable us to operate an independent multi-plant network within the UK, satisfying customer demand with a wide and complementary range of market-leading products and enabling us to expand our customer base."

The deal was supported by three Sheffield-based teams. Grant Thornton provided advisory services. Legal advisers were from Irwin Mitchell Solicitors and banking facilities were provided by Lloyds TSB.

Matt Ainsworth of Irwin Mitchell Solicitors said: "Cepac is already a very successful business and these acquisitions give it an even brighter future – this is truly a South Yorkshire deal and it's fantastic that a Sheffield based team of advisers and funders has been able to work together seamlessly to make this happen."

News: Network Rail commits to Rotherham tram train project

By

Network Rail, the owners and operators of Britain's rail infrastructure, has committed £13m to the Sheffield to Rotherham tram-train pilot project and outlined other improvement to the rail network in the city region.

Network Rail's strategic business plan, which has been submitted to the Office of Rail Regulation, sets out proposals which will help drive Britain's economy and make its railway as efficient as the best in Europe.

With year-on-year passenger and freight growth continuing at unprecedented levels, Network Rail plans to spend £37.5bn on running and expanding Britain's railway over the five years to 2019 (known as control period 5, or CP5).

The plan includes £13m for the tram-train project, the first project of its kind in the country, that last year secured £58m from the government.

The pilot scheme will see flexible vehicles run on both rail and tram networks, using the freight route from Rotherham and then joining the Sheffield Supertram network at Meadowhall South. Three trams an hour would run all day from Sheffield city centre through the redeveloped Rotherham Central station to Parkgate retail park.

The project would include major works such as the electrification of a stretch of track between Sheffield and Rotherham and the construction of 400 metre line linking the tramway to the train tracks.

At a recent transport liaison group in Rotherham, the SYPTE reported that contract negotiations and design discussions continue in respect of the project. They anticipate that construction work will begin on site during the Spring 2013, with expected completion of the project during 2015.

Network Rail's business plans included a £514.61m commitment for the electrification of the Midland Mainline that links London to Sheffield. It will allow more frequent, more reliable and quicker trains to run on the route.

Line speed improvements at various locations along the Midland Main Line between London St Pancras International and Sheffield will raise the speed for passenger services from 110mph to a maximum permissible speed of 125mph.

Martin Frobisher, route managing director at Network Rail, said: "Our route plan sets out the investments we are making for the future, particularly our focus on new technology and electrification and creating more capacity."

The extension to Nottingham allows electric operation of the two Nottingham – St Pancras services each hour by December 2019. The route via Derby to Sheffield is then expected to be electrified by December 2021 in Network Rail's next control period (CP6).

It is anticipated that electrification of Sheffield – Doncaster, Swinton to South Kirkby Junction and Chesterfield – Beighton Junction – Rotherham would be part of an on going rolling programme of electrification to complete these parts of the Electric Spine in CP6.
On the London North Eastern line that connects the capital to Doncaster, commitment has been made to the Northern Hub project (£560m). The massive upgrading of the rail network of the North is set to create 20,000 jobs and increases rail capacity across the north of England by 700 services per day. Elements includes £45m for doubling Dore junction and Calder Valley journey time improvement.

It was hoped that the Northern Hub would lead to a faster journey time of 40 minutes between Sheffield and Manchester and trains every 20 minutes between Sheffield and Manchester.

The Northen Hub also has the potential to bring faster services to the recently redeveloped Rotherham Central station and an extra train every hour throughout the day to Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool.

Other Network Rail projects include increasing capacity at Sheffield with suburban train lengthening and delivery of extra capacity following electrification of the Midland Mainline and the Northern Hub.

In Rotherham, critical junction renewals are planned for Rotherham Masborough in 2013, Aldwarke Junction in 2014 and at Holmes Junction in 2015.

Network Rail also gave its support to the High Speed 2 project, the second phase of which will see lines extending north from Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds by 2033, including the construction of an intermediate station in South Yorkshire.

By

Inspire Rotherham, the borough's literacy campaign, has come up with a novel idea to fill an empty retail unit in the town centre.

The Pop Up Story Shop on Corporation Street is described as "a magical new venue to ignite a spark of creativity in all of us."

The ground floor of the former Copycatz unit showcases local talented artists, illustrators and authors, including Gervase Phinn, Gail Jones, Peter J Murray and the young writers of the "Cube."

Once complete, the venue will host workshops including book-making, illustrating stories, storytelling, digital stories, cartoons, family reading, and there will be opportunities to meet authors, creative writers, historians, artists and illustrators.

Michael Rosen, broadcaster, children's novelist and poet and previous children's laureate, visited the shop in December. He said: "It's great to be in at the very beginning of an exciting new writing venue for people of all ages.

"It's right on the high street, a place where older groups, playgroups, any groups, can come in, discover they've got a voice, talk about what's important.

"Reading and writing is transformational. When you read and write you can feel immediately, the world around you is full of possibilities and you can be part of what can change it – and that's what's going on here."

News: Chamber continue business support into 2013

By

Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce is offering valuable support to those wanting to start up a new business in 2013.

People thinking of kicking off their own venture can access free guidance through the Chamber, from the initial start-up process right through to the growth and development of their business, via the Regional Enterprise Programme.

Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber is the regional lead contractor for the programme across Yorkshire and the Humber, working in partnership with BCC-accredited Chambers and accredited Enterprise Agencies.

The Regional Enterprise Programme project is part financed by the Yorkshire and Humber European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Programme 2007 to 2013.

The programme includes intensive start-up support, introductions to like-minded businesses on a local, sub regional and national level, post-start support and the opportunity of being mentored by successful business owners.

Gary Dunne, programme manager at he chamber, said: "Everyone thinks about going self employed at some stage. If you have the drive to do it and the support from family that is 95 per cent of the battle.

"In the current economic climate, we have people being with a lot of skill and experience that they can put to good use, rather than signing on or going to work for someone else, going self employed is a viable option if they have a business plan and have researched their idea.

"Through the programme, we handhold potential entrepreneurs while they gain confidence and learn how to do things for themselves. This makes the experience less daunting and relieves the pressure on them in the early stages.

"The bigger picture is that we hope the programme can improve communities by giving people new opportunities, boosting the local economy and creating jobs."
