News: A decade at Century

By

Century Business Centre at Manvers in Rotherham has recently celebrated 10 years of helping local enterprises to thrive and grow. The Centre, designed for small and new start business, offers a range of office and workshop units, and Centre staff marked the occasion with some of their current tenant companies.

Since 2000 the Centre has been home to over 200 businesses, creating more than 600 jobs.

The Centre, owned and managed by Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RiDO), the regeneration arm of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council was originally developed to help local people in the Manvers area of the Dearne Valley to set up their own businesses following the decline of traditional industries.

Amanda Parris, RiDO's Business Centre Manager said: "This is an important milestone, not just for Century but for the fact that it started the whole culture of business incubation in Rotherham. It has been really great working with all of the businesses that have being based here over the years, and to see many of them grow and expand.

"It has also being interesting to see the developments around the Manvers area in the last ten years. Back in 2000 Century stood on its own, but now with more commercial and residential developments, the area is a great place to live and work."

Martek Marine have grown from one workshop unit and £6,000 of start up capital into a world leader in the manufacture of safety and environmental emissions monitoring systems for the global marine industry, turning over in excess of £7m per year.

Steve Coulson, Director at Martek Marine said: "Choosing Century Business Centre was a great decision in our growth story. The set-up at the Centre gave us the flexibility to develop our business in a rapid, organic way, allowing our business to incubate then accommodating our growth spurts, and eventually allowing us to fend for ourselves without bureaucracy or fuss.

"The business centre itself is only one story; the staff are the true stars. Led by Amanda Parris they always gave us the very best service, and after leaving Century to move into a self contained unit we have continued to progress, even in the harshest trading conditions in living memory."

The success at Century led the Council to expand the provision for small business incubator premises, and RiDO now has four centres, located across the Borough at Moorgate Crofts, Templeborough and Dinnington providing over 200 office and workshop units.

Earlier this year, the Wentworth firm acquired top sales and business development training provider to the legal sector, Ridley Fleming, to strengthen its professional services team.

Their new specialist legal services arm, HuthwaiteFleming, has teamed up with RBS and NatWest to host a series of conferences around the UK designed to help leaders and finance managers in law firms address the challenges they face in a fast-changing legal services environment.

Peter Fleming, partner with HuthwaiteFleming, said: "The past year has proved especially tough for many firms.

"And, with the Legal Services Act due to come into effect in October 2011, the next few months will put even greater pressure on them to meet new commercial and regulatory demands."

In response, the free-of-charge conferences provide those attending with an opportunity to hear high-profile speakers address a broad range of topical concerns. These include the growing competitive threat, pressure to consolidate, understanding clients' buying criteria and negotiating profitable fees.

Heading the line-up will be industry thought-leader, Professor Stephen Mayson, strategic advisor to the Huthwaite Group, director of the Legal Services Institute and professor of strategy at The College of Law, who will explore in more detail the new world of legal services in 2011.

News: Tata Steel Europe invests in South Yorkshire

By

Tata Steel Europe is investing £6.5m in new high-tech equipment at its Stocksbridge plant in South Yorkshire, to increase production of aerospace steels. A move that will safeguard 2,000 jobs at Rotherham and Stocksbridge.

Tata Steel Speciality has been a leading manufacturer of aerospace steels for more than 60 years and supplies special steels to aerospace component manufacturers around the world from the company's South Yorkshire sites at Rotherham and Stocksbridge.

Peter Hogg, Tata Steel Speciality's general manager, said: "This investment will make us stronger and help secure the jobs of 2,000 South Yorkshire steelworkers. It's a big confidence boost.

"As the demand for aerospace steel increases, it's vital we have the ability to increase our production of this highly technical and demanding product, which is used in aircraft landing gear, engines, wings and other safety-critical components.

"Customers want higher-quality, higher-strength and superior-performance steels. This investment demonstrates our commitment to continue supplying steel to the most demanding applications in the world."

Investment in 2005 saw the Rotherham site at Aldwarke become the focus for steel making, casting and rolling of specialist steels. The steel is manufactured at the Rotherham site before undergoing further refining at the Stocksbridge plant to improve the quality.

News: Rotherham's retail revival continues

By

The team tasked with reviving the retail offer in Rotherham town centre are continuing to bring in more outlets.

With over 30 new businesses opening since January, another three are set to open over the coming weeks and the council's The Business & Retail Investment Team are reporting a strong pipeline of live enquiries.

A new coffee shop is set to open on the corner of Imperial Buildings overlooking the Minster. Sayas coffee shop is opening with the help of a business vitality grant and will offer coffees and speciality waffles.

Pin Mei Chinese Restaurant, located in the former Dragon Peal restaurant on High Street, will offers delicious authentic cantonese cuisine.

Recently opened in the former Millets store on Howard Street, Park Mills Ex-Catalogue Shop has a great range of homeware and electricals.

In a report to the council's Regeneration Scrutiny Panel last week, Tim O'Connell, Business & Retail Investment Team Manager, outlined their successful proactive approach to securing investment into the town centre using lessons learned from RiDO's wider inward investment activity.

Direct contact with retailers with known requirements or a customer profile that matches Rotherham's demography has proved very successful along with networking with intermediates such as property agents.

As a result the team has a strong pipeline of live enquiries including two major coffee chains, one of the UK's leading young clothing brands, a retailer of perfumes and associated products, a restaurant chain operating corporate stores and franchise stores, a gentleman's outfitters and an affordable clothing and lifestyle products retailer selling clothes and home ware that has over 200 stores across the UK. Five major national stores are also interested in the units within the Interchange mall area.

The report added that the proactive approach will continue with work to strengthen relationships with agents representing national stores with a view to attracting them to the town centre and direct contact with key decision makers within retail organisations.

Early stage approaches will also be made to key retailers when there are potential losses to the town, for example, when lease terms are coming to an end. The team are also looking to work more closely with the Planning Service to ensure properties fit the needs of national stores looking to come to Rotherham.

News: FreeBee bus smashes passenger target

By

The Rotherham FreeBee celebrated its first anniversary by smashing the passenger target set when it launched last October.

The free bus service, which carries passengers around Rotherham town centre and to Parkgate, has been a resounding success, and is now carrying an average of up to 9,000 passengers every week. Market Research has shown that the FreeBee is leading to people shopping more in both the Town Centre and Parkgate, which is great news for Rotherham.

David Young, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) Director of Customer Experience said: "We are delighted that the service has been such a big success in its first year. FreeBee offers a free and attractive service to local people, and provides good links to the town's thriving markets, shops and events, as well as to the complementary retail offer at Parkgate. It has made a really positive contribution to Rotherham and we hope it will continue to do so."

The number of passengers using the free bus service recently exceeded 10,000 in one week for the first time.

Parkgate Operations Manager, Billy Smith, said: "We have seen steady weekly increases all year, but the message has really got home that the free bus service is both free and frequent, and an idealway to combine shopping visits to Parkgate and the town centre. With the approach of the busy Christmas shopping period, this is a real plus for Rotherham."

The service is funded by SYPTE and operated by Powells, who are both members of the Travel South Yorkshire partnership. The environmentally-friendly buses used were the first of their kind in the town.

86% of customers say they are very satisfied with the service, which runs every 12 minutes from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm.

News: Outline plans approved for Rotherham United's Community Stadium

By

Rotherham United's outline planning application for a 12,000 seater community stadium has been approved by members of the planning board at Rotherham Council.

Members agreed with the recommendation from planning officers that the site of the former Guest and Chrimes foundry on the edge of the town centre is appropriate for a stadium development.

As the site is allocated as business use in the borough's development plan, the application will be referred to the the Secretary of State for confirmation and if they decide not to intervene then planning permission will be granted subject to a number of conditions.

Chairman Tony Stewart said: "We are delighted that the Council have supported the application, for what is a significant regeneration scheme in central Rotherham, which is proceeding at a pace despite the worst recession in 30 years.

"This represents another significant step towards our goal of bringing the Millers back home to Rotherham and we're all determined to make Rotherham United a Football Club that everyone in the town can not only be proud of but will feel a part of too."

The approved outline plans focus on the location, scale, design and access and the impacts on flooding, noise, transport, ecology and listed buildings.

Details of the plans can be found here.

The report concludes that the benefits of a stadium development outweigh any negatives. Benefits including employment opportunities, a positive impact on the town centre with increased visitors and trade, bringing a brownfield site back into use, improved public realm and landscaping, bringing forward a flood protection scheme, protecting the biodiversity of the site and creating space for community use.

The site is sequentially preferable to other sites in the borough, including Millmoor and is also considered to be in an accessible sustainable location, close to the town centre and its railway station and bus interchange.

A condition of approval has been agreed by the club that would see a second vehicular / pedestrian access road to Main Street created adjacent to the railway line at the North West of the site.

An Events Management Plan will also need to be put in place to ensure there are no access problems on match days.

Conditions are also in place regarding the use of the car park and the club will need to provide details on how how the proposal will help preserve and enhance the nearby listed building until it can ultimately be brought back into use.

Separate planning applications are expected regarding the listed building as well as for raising the land levels for flood protection and any additional community and other uses on the site.

Detailed plans and a reserved matters application will now be submitted, and with construction estimated to take 12 - 14 months, the club hopes that the new stadium will be built for the start of the 2012/13 season.

News: AMF at the cutting edge

By

The Advanced Manufacturing Forum returns in December with an exclusive look at cutting tools and supplies for exotic and difficult-to-machine materials.

The AMF is the technology network for manufacturing businesses and run by the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing. The regular AMF events cover a range of topics of relevance to manufacturing businesses, offering insight into current and emerging technologies and supply chain issues.

Hosted by Dormer Tools on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham, the next event will show how cutting tool companies and suppliers are innovating to improve the performance and increase the life of their products.

Leading companies in the aerospace, defence, medical and energy markets are increasingly demanding difficult-to-cut materials such as titanium and nickel alloys and carbon-fibre composites. This presents new technology challenges to their manufacturing suppliers and tool providers.

Working closely with specialists at the forefront of technology, Dormer has acquired valuable, in-depth expertise in the field of aerospace component machining. Partnerships with leading universities and research centres around the world have provided a unique perspective into the latest technologies and processes.

Dormer's cutting tools are designed to be used in aerospace applications where superior performance and quality are demanded, often in the drilling of rivet holes. Ricky Payling, Dormer's key account manager, aerospace and composites, explains: "This is the most common aircraft manufacturing procedure and is typically undertaken in a number of steps.

"Dormer's rivet drills, have, however, been designed to promote precise, "one-shot" drilling of countersunk holes, enabling significant cost-per-hole benefits through increased tool life and productivity."

The event is on Tuesday December 7 and other speakers include Sandvik Coromant, Technicut, Nikken Kosakusho, and Houghton.

News: Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership announces Chair

By

James Newman has been named as the chair of the newly established Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

The former Master Cutler and current chairman of Finance Yorkshire helped to bring the bid together with businesses and local authority representatives across the City Region in the summer.

Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) are the government's new model to promote economic development. The intention is that LEPs will provide the strategic leadership required to set out local economic priorities, and better reflect the natural economic geography of the areas they serve.

The Sheffield City Region was given the green light to establish one of the UK's first Local Enterprise Partnerships in October.

James Newman said: "I am delighted to be taking on the role as first Chairman of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). Having been closely involved in the development of the original proposals submitted to Government at the beginning of September, I am delighted that our LEP is in the first wave of 24 LEPs being set up across the country – a fantastic achievement and a timely recognition by the Government of what the Sheffield City Region has to offer.

"The formation of the LEP is a fantastic opportunity for business and local government to work together in partnership to make a real difference to the economy of the whole area. Our commitment will be to ensure the growth of a rebalanced local economy, lead by the private sector, which will also contribute significantly to the renewal of the national economy as a whole.

"I am very much looking forward to leading the next very important phase in the formation of the LEP, which will be to create a real private and public partnership on the Board. This will involve developing more detailed business plans for the region by building on the success of existing partnership structures, in a more focused and collaborative way, so as to stimulate and encourage economic growth."

An announcement on the full LEP board members is expected by the end of the year.

News: ROAR hoping to secure some of the People's Millions for Rotherham

By

Rotherham Open Arts Reniassance (ROAR) is hoping to secure a grant of £50,000 today that will help create a dedicated arts space in Rotherham town centre.

ROAR is one of eight other projects in Yorkshire for the People's Millions Big Lottery Fund Programme and will be up against a project in Holgate, York. A short video about the projects will be shown on the ITV regional news between 6.00pm and 6.30pm.

ROAR's project is to convert 5,000 square feet of empty office space into low cost artists studios and community space – suitable for workshops and temporary events – accessible to all.

ROAR has identified the top floor of Westgate Chambers in Rotherham town centre as a suitable site. Close to the mini arts hub in the Imperial Buildings and next to the newly developed Old Market, (the ground floor of which is currently being used for exhibitions and events), the site offers fantastic opportunities to enlarge the independent artistic offer for Rotherham.

Currently many arts based groups meet and deliver workshops sessions in community centres and office spaces or general meeting rooms and many visual artists work in isolation at home and in inappropriate or not ideal surroundings.

ROAR wishes to create a space where artists (from all disciplines) can get together, work, network, learn, inspire and be inspired. The space is large enough and suitable for around ten artists studios, workshop, meeting, office and rehearsal space as well as for short or long term storage.

Karen Sherwood, CEO at ROAR said: "ROAR is absolutely delighted to have been shortlisted for this money and is now campaigning for support for our project. We really believe that our proposal will offer new opportunities for the people of Rotherham through the arts and economic benefit to Rotherham town centre. All we have to do now is win the TV vote!"

News: Rotherham company launch innovative product that saves homes £100 a year on electricity bills

By

A revolutionary energy saving solution for the home, Voltage Optimisation 4 Home, or VO4HOME, has recently launched by a Rotherham company.

Available nationwide, the innovative system, which is based on proven technology currently used by many commercial electricity users, allows households to reduce their carbon footprint by an average of 330 – 500 lbs per year, save between £90 and £150 annually on electricity bills and prevent wear and tear, normally caused by electrical over supply and power surges, on household appliances.

VO4HOME is designed to maximise the delivery of energy into the home to 220V/230V. Currently the voltage supplied to homes by UK energy companies averages 242V, while electrical equipment in the home is designed to operate on 220V/230V.

An innovative energy saving device VO4HOME, which relies on magnetic interaction, has no moving parts and requires no maintenance. In addition, it delivers low impedance, high efficiency and comes with a 5 year warranty.

There are an estimated 27 million households in Britain, with most having the carbon footprint the size of a cow. If each household were to be installed with a VO4HOME system, the UK as a whole would save between £2.7 billion and £4 billion each year on energy costs and reduce its carbon emissions by 9 - 13.5 billion lbs per year.

Dr. Alex Mardapittas, developer of the innovative VO4HOME solution, said: "We have developed a product that will have a huge impact not only on the amount of carbon that is emitted by households across the UK, but across the world.

"With a VO4HOME installed households will soon be able to make significant, tangible savings on their annual electricity bill, whilst at the same time doing their bit for the environment."

News: Planners back Rotherham United Community Stadium application

By

Members of the planning board at Rotherham Council have been recommended to approve the outline application submitted by Rotherham United for a community stadium on the edge of the town centre.

The club submitted its formal outline planning application for the new 12,000 all-seater stadium in July and is confident of a favourable decision at the meeting of the planning board on November 25.

Details of the planning application can be found here.

In the report to the board, Senior Planner and case officer, Sandra Siner has recommended that the application be referred to the Secretary of State for confirmation and if they decide not to intervene then planning permission be granted subject to a number of conditions.

Planning consultants, Signet Planning worked on the outline plans that show how the stadium will be located at the Guest and Chrimes and Gloystarne site.

Also assessed are plans for design and access and environmental assessments looking at the impacts on flooding, noise, transport, ecology and listed buildings.

The report concludes that the benefits of a stadium development outweigh any negatives and states that the site is appropriate for a stadium despite it being allocated as business use in the borough's development plan. It also states that the site is sequentially preferable to other sites in the borough, including Millmoor.

Other benefits are highlighted including employment opportunities, a positive impact on the town centre with increased visitors and trade, bringing a brownfield site back into use, improved public realm and landscaping, bringing forward a flood protection scheme, protecting the biodiversity of the site and creating space for community use.

The site is also considered to be in an accessible sustainable location, close to the town centre and its railway station and bus interchange.

Access is one of the biggest issues with the South Yorkshire Police raising concerns over what they describe as "an island site". The report outlines how another access point in addition to Don Street is required but the applicant discounted a bridge over the River Don to Sheffield Road / Westgate as not being economically viable.

A condition of approval has been agreed by the club that would see a second vehicular / pedestrian access road to Main Street created adjacent to the railway line at the North West of the site.

An Events Management Plan will also need to be put in place to ensure there are no access problems on match days.

In the interests of road safety and concerns over the build up of traffic at peak times at Main Street roundabout, a condition is also included that would restrict the use of the 500 space car park so that it cannot be utilised by the general public, unless attending a football match, at any time.

The Rotherham Civic Society and English Heritage did not object to the stadium development but raised the issue of its impact on the listed building on the site. The planner's report concluded that the development would have a negligible impact on the listed Guest and Chrimes building and bring significant benefits, including immediate benefits to the protection of the listed building, especially against the threat of flooding.

A condition is included to require details be submitted on how the proposed development links into the listed building, and how the proposal will help preserve and enhance the building until it can ultimately be brought back into use.

Mori Seiki's collaboration on the project will help to develop growth within the industry and local communities, ensuring that the UK continues to play a leading role in aerospace in the 21st century.

News: The drinks are on Beatson Clark

By

Rotherham glass manufacturer Beatson Clark has been selected by leading drinks producer Intercontinental Brands Ltd as it launches additional and exciting products to its iconic St Helier range.

Intercontinental Brands Ltd (ICB) successfully launched its distinctive St Helier Pear Cider drink in 2007 utilising 500ml and 1 litre beer bottles which were designed and manufactured by Beatson Clark. The amber glass containers were designed during a joint venture and benefitted from different closure systems.

ICB is now launching two new varieties in the 500ml capacity – a cherry flavoured pear cider extending the popular fruit flavoured cider range and a pre-mixed lager shandy, aimed at adults who require drinks at the lower end of the abv spectrum. Also new to the market by ICB is Tesco's pre-mixed cocktails in three flavours; Cococabana and Pineapple, Jeeves and Lemonade, and Savanna and Lemonade. This product will utilise the 1 litre version of the bottle and will be presented for sale fully sleeved.

Mike Carthy, Operations Director at ICB said: "The increase in demand for unusual drinks does not seem to be diminishing, and, as a premier drinks manufacturer our packaging and branding is of high importance. Beatson Clark has once again delivered in terms of product innovation, production quality and delivery, ensuring their continued support of our core business requirements."

The Greasborough Road firm also helped Halewood International test the market for its new Crabbies alcoholic ginger beer.

Crabbies, which was launched at the end of last year, was propelled to iconic status as a desirable alcoholic drink, with sales exceeding all expectations. However thanks to its flexibility in production, Beatson Clark was able to respond and ensure a constant supply.

"The service we have received from Beatson Clark over the last year has been excellent," commented Ian Duffy, Purchasing Director Halewood International. "They were able to supply us with a quality standard 500ml amber ale bottle to test the market for our new Crabbies brand, and reacted quickly and efficiently when demand increased, proving they are a supplier who you can rely on and one who really can react to changing market."

Following on from this success, when retailers wanted a smaller bottle to market in a multi pack, Beatson Clark was also able to step in with its standard 330ml beer bottle.

Halewood International is now launching a new adult soft drink in the same Beatson Clark 500ml amber ale bottle. "Iron Press" is targeted primarily at men who require a soft drink but in a traditional masculine package.

News: Call for final tenders for local waste scheme

By

The call for final tenders will be issued shortly for a waste facility on land at Bolton Road, Manvers, in Rotherham. These will now be judged according to a fixed set of criteria and a preferred bidder will be chosen early in the New Year.

Two leading specialist waste organisations – SITA Lend Lease and 3SE, a consortium of Shanks Group plc and SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy plc) – have put forward different proposals to deal with the waste.

£77.4m of Private Finance Initiative (PFI) funding has been secured from central government's Waste Infrastructure Development Programme to deliver the development.

Most leftover waste ends up in landfill, but councils across the country must reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, or face hefty fines.

The 3SE partnership will use proven waste treatment technology at the site to produce a renewable and green fuel for use at Scottish and Southern Energy's Ferrybridge site. The "green"' energy produced can then be used by the region's residents and businesses.

SITA Lend Lease's proposal is to develop a modern and high-tech recycling and energy recovery centre at Bolton Road, Manvers, which will be called the Dearne Valley Treatment and Energy Centre (DVTEC). This facility will have two main parts: a recycling area and an energy recovery area.

A new Project Director has also been appointed to take the project through to the next stage of the PFI process. John Holden-Ross of APSE (Association of Public Sector Excellence) is a lawyer who specialises in procurement and major PFI schemes, including waste management.

BDR Waste Partnership chair, Cllr Richard Russell, paid tribute to the work of former Project Director Geoff Birkett.

He said: "Geoff has done a great job to bring the project to this important milestone and the Project Board have placed on record their thanks and appreciation. "From this stage onwards different skills are needed to bring the project to fruition, and we extend a warm welcome to John Holden-Ross who has a great deal of experience in this field."

The chosen scheme will be subject to planning permission, and there will be a lengthy consultation and planning process when local residents will be able to make their views known.

News: Martek wins contract from Canadian Navy

By

Innovative Rotherham company, Martek Marine has signed a breakthrough contract with the Canadian Navy.

The deal will see Martek supply 12 MM2000 marine gas detection systems, with Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) capability, to the Canadian Navy's fleet of patrol frigates based in Victoria, British Columbia, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The systems are designed to provide an early warning of any refrigerant leaking into the atmosphere and to detect the presence of flammable gas.

This is the first contract that the Manvers firm, one of the leading manufacturers of marine safety and environmental monitoring systems, has secured with the Canadian Navy.

Steve Coulson, Business Development Director, Martek Marine, said: "This is an important order for us as it demonstrates the adaptability of the MM2000 system to detect different gases, and its suitability for use on different types of vessels operating in varied, and sometimes extreme environments.

"The system has been tested for work in ultra-low temperature environments similar to those found in northern Canada during winter, and has been certified to operate without any problems in temperatures down to -55oC."

The contract was awarded by Canada's Department of National Defence, as a result of Martek's ability to satisfy a number of demanding technical and commercial criteria. This included long term stability, ease of maintenance, mean time between failure (MTBF) performance, and the costs of the systems and their installation.

Martek staff supported by certified engineers will carry out the commissioning of the MM2000 hardware onboard the 12 Canadian Navy vessels over the coming year. In addition, Martek will be supplying a full spare parts and technical support package for the equipment.

News: Rotherham named as the most enterprising place in Britain

By

Rotherham's status as a world-leader in enterprise education has been recognised at a national awards ceremony that has named the borough as the most enterprising place in the UK.

The prestigious Enterprising Britain competition recognises and rewards local organisations that have worked together to drive the social and economic transformation of a place. Now in its sixth year, it is a key part of the Government's drive to increase entrepreneurial activity in the UK and a major part of Global Enterprise Week.

Rotherham was named the most enterprising place in Yorkshire in July after enterprising school children and young entrepreneurs from the town wowed a panel of tough, private sector judges.

In October three judges visited Rotherham to find out more about the project and colleagues from the council, teachers and head teachers, children and young people, young entrepreneurs and members of the business community helped to bring the project to life and show the impact that enterprise is having in Rotherham.

Jackie Frost, Rotherham Council's Enterprise Projects Manager said: "This award means so much to the people of Rotherham and we are absolutely delighted to win.

"Enterprising Britain has not only been a fantastic opportunity to celebrate what has been achieved through Rotherham Ready; it has enabled us to share what we have learnt to inspire other communities that want to embrace enterprise."

Primary and secondary school pupils told the panel how enterprise education was making a difference to their aspirations, and Young Entrepreneur Luci Bennett described how she successfully developed her own fashion label, Roc and Doll.

Their stories showed how Rotherham has the complete package for developing enterprise - with Rotherham Ready inspiring children about business as soon as they start school, and Rotherham Youth Enterprise providing all the support young people need to make their business dreams a reality.

Rotherham Ready, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, has trained hundreds of teachers to develop enterprise in schools and colleges, and harnessed the passion of the business community to promote enterprise and entrepreneurship in education.

An astounding 103 schools and colleges in Rotherham have also achieved the Warwick Award for Excellence in Enterprise Education - the quality mark for enterprise learning.

Rotherham Youth Enterprise provides start up support, business coaching and incubation workspace for young entrepreneurs - enabling 232 youngsters to start businesses in the last five years.

The awards were announced at the House of Lords at a ceremony attended by Mark Prisk MP, Minister of State for Business and Enterprise and Peter Jones. A delegation from Rotherham including Jackie Frost, Rotherham Ready Project Officer Catherine Brentnall, Lauren Stanley and James Wass, students from St Bernard's Catholic High School, their enterprising teacher Kevin Wright and Rotherham young entrepreneur Dominic Beck were there to hear the results.

Tom Bewick, CEO of Enterprise UK, who run the competition on behalf of the Department for Business Innovation and Skills, said: "Rotherham Ready and all of the projects that entered this year's Enterprising Britain competition are great examples of organisations working collaboratively to foster an entrepreneurial spirit, encouraging aspiring entrepreneurs to take up the challenge to make a job, rather than take a job.

"Today we are celebrating their accomplishments and throughout this week during Global Entrepreneurship Week, we will challenge more communities, policymakers, education, business and the investment community to back Britain's entrepreneurs and to make this the entrepreneurial decade."

After beating 11 other finalists from across the UK, the Rotherham team will now go on to represent the UK at the European Enterprise Awards next year.

Rotherham was named the most enterprising place in Yorkshire and the Humber in 2006 and Scarborough was named the most enterprising place in the UK in 2008.

News: Manvers boat club install innovative heat pump

By

Manvers Waterfront Boat Club in Rotherham is one of the first buildings in the UK to heat its clubhouse through a ground source heat pump system laid in a lake, in a system supplied by Sheffield-based Danfoss Heat Pumps.

The new boat club, which offers Canoeing, Angling and Triathlon, draws energy from loops placed in the lake in an innovative method that makes the best use of natural resources, with a very high recovery of energy. The heat pump is providing space and water heating for the café facilities, changing rooms and showers, meeting rooms and offices for use by members and visitors to the boat club.

Canoe England, which runs the club, was looking for an affordable and sustainable method of heating the property that could then be used as a blueprint for other boat clubs around the country. The organisation reviewed the various energy sources available to them and heat pumps proved to be much more affordable to run and, when heat was to be derived from the lake, they found they could be expected to deliver a very high efficiency – many times higher than a high efficiency gas boiler.

Chris Hawkesworth, Chairman of Manvers Waterfront Boat Club, said: "We are really excited about being the first club in the country that has the capability to use energy from a natural water resource to heat our building.

"After many reviews of the alternatives, we chose Danfoss' heat pumps because they are a major manufacturer with a strong reputation and it also helped that I have their heat pumps fitted at home so knew they would provide a high quality, reliable, efficient form of heating.

"I don't think any of us expected them to be able to deliver such efficient performance as they have done – achieving a very high performance, which will save us significantly on our running costs, whilst delivering a consistent level of heating and hot water."

The pipes were laid in 12 metre depth of water, with divers placing the 4 x 200m ground loops deep on the bed of the lake, which were then secured at regular intervals. They then dug a 130m trench which led from the lake to the building entrance to accommodate the loops from the lake.

Chris Dale, Director of Danfoss Heat Pumps, said: "Water source heat pumps are a tried and tested method in Scandinavia and other Northern European countries, but it is great that this exciting method installation of heat pumps is being used here in Rotherham.

"There are many properties located close to water that could take advantage of closed loop water source heat pumps and this is the perfect example of how effective they are in providing space heating and hot water, even for larger buildings."

The Manvers Waterfront Boat Club, which officially opens in May 2011, offers members and visitors a wide range of activities including canoeing and kayaking, angling, sailing, model power boating, triathlon and supervised open water swimming. They currently have 500 members and expect to attract 6,000 visitors at major events in 2011.

News: Tata Steel Europe profits in the first half

By

In their latest financial results, Tata Steel Europe, which includes the sites in Rotherham, has posted an increase in turnover and earnings despite weaker market conditions during the summer months.

Turnover at Tata Steel Europe Limited of $8 billion in the first half of the financial year was up 13% from the $7.12 billion in first half of 2010. EBITDA (earnings) of $501m in the first half were an increase of $1.3 billion from the loss of $813m posted in the first half of 2010. Liquid steel production and deliveries were also up on the same period last year.

Turnover in the second quarter was also up on figures announced for quarter 1 but EBITDA (earnings), production and deliveries were down over the summer months compared to the previous quarter.

The profitability in the first half of the year reflects the benefits of the cost saving and restructuring measures that were implemented during the financial crisis that saw Corus announce in 2009 that 1,100 jobs would be lost in Rotherham.

Tata Steel Europe will focus on costs as the economies of Europe continue their slow recovery in order to ensure these benefits are sustained in the event of weakness continuing or recurring in European steel markets.

Dr Karl-Ulrich Köhler, the new Tata Steel Europe MD & CEO, who took up his post in October, said: "The profitability of this first half, in Europe, is a tribute to the cost and restructuring measures implemented in response to the financial crisis and our discipline in securing these benefits as demand returns to the market.

"In September our lenders showed their confidence in the Group's future prospects by agreeing to a refinancing package to stabilise our debt arrangements. We now have a sound platform on which to strengthen our recovery and to develop our product and service differentiation initiatives. But, with an uncertain demand outlook in Europe, our operations also remain focused on cost control and stable manufacturing."

The company also announced that the Speciality Steels business in South Yorkshire also consolidated its return to profitability in the first half of 2011. The business has shown the benefits of a strategy that focuses on exceptional high-value products and sectors. The proportion of high-value sales in the Speciality Steels portfolio has risen from 50% to 90%.

By

Signs Express business owners Steve & Carol Morris are delighted to announce they have purchased an additional territory to their franchise package, expanding the market leading sign company to cover the whole of Sheffield.

With their production base in Templeborough and previously covering just the north of Sheffield and surrounding areas, the husband and wife team decided to expand their operation following consistent growth and the award of a number of high profile contracts.

One such contract is the recent award to provide all signage to Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, a fourth successive contract win for the council work for Signs Express (Sheffield) since they first opened in 2004.

Now covering all of Sheffield there are high hopes of expansion as the production centre grows its customer base further. Hopwood Park is situated on Manvers Way and will comprise two- and three-bedroom homes. Construction work is expected to be completed next Spring with the first show homes ready in February 2011.

This development is great news for the people of the Dearne Valley and our investment of £296,250 will help 67 local people move into their new homes in the next few months."

Robert Orr, from Leicester-based Westleigh New Homes, added: "Hopwood Park will be a delightful development offering new homes for first time buyers and those seeking their next family home. Homes are expected to be ready next Spring but homebuyers are invited to register their interest with us now to avoid disappointment."

News: More council contracts for Powerstar

By

Three more local councils are set to lower the amount of energy they use by deploying Powerstar voltage optimisation systems from innovative Rotherham company, EMSc (UK) Limited.

Due to Powerstar, Tower Hamlets Council, Cotswold District Council and Derby City Council will altogether save more than £24,000 in electricity bills, 240,651kWh of electricity consumption and over 153 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Powerstar is the only voltage optimisation system designed and manufactured in the UK and is the highest rated with an efficiency of 99.91%.

Tower Hamlets Council, in London's East End, has installed a Powerstar system at Albert Jacob House, after Powerstar identified an opportunity to save a minimum of 12% in electricity consumption. Following the installation, an annual saving in electricity consumption of 54,065kWh will be achieved, equating to savings of £6,411 in annual electricity charges and 30 tonnes of carbon emissions per annum.

Derby City Council is aiming to reduce its carbon emissions by 25% by 2013/14 as part of a "Climate Change Strategy". Due to this, the Council decided to install Powerstar systems in the Eagle Centre market, the Environmental Services Parks Management depot and the Market Hall. The council is set to save at least £10,000 per annum in electricity costs, 128,972 kWh in electricity consumption and 69.2 tonnes of carbon emissions, with the system installed at the Eagle Centre market alone expected to reduce electricity consumption by 14.6%.

Cotswold District Council has a carbon management plan that aims to cut CO2 emissions by 25% by 2015. Powerstar was commissioned to install a unit at Cotswold Leisure Centre, enabling savings in energy consumption of 57,614KwH and an overall energy saving of 8%. The Centre has also decreased its carbon footprint by reducing CO2 emissions by 54 tonnes. In monetary terms, Powerstar is projected to make an annual saving of £7,800 on the Leisure Centre’s electricity costs.

Councillor Mark Tufnell, cabinet member for environment and communities, Cotswold District Council said: "The introduction of the Powerstar unit at the Leisure Centre building is a significant contributor to Cotswold District Council's energy saving programme. I am particularly pleased that we have reduced costs while contributing to our goal of achieving a 25% reduction in harmful carbon emissions by 2015."
