News: Rotherham's latest Tenner Tycoons

By

A group of young entrepreneurs from Rotherham have been awarded one of ten prestigious titles in the international Tenner Tycoon competition run by Dragon's Den star, Peter Jones.

The year 6 students at Brinsworth Howarth J&I School worked together to run a Macbeth themed money-making scheme.

They had a fair selling delights such as "witches brew" and "spider buns" and a whole host of games and competitions. They also helped the community with a "Cawdor carwash" and a cleaning service inspired by the idea of witches on broomsticks.

The pupils raised £879 altogether and are donating it to school-related projects, including £400 to the year 6 Macbeth production.

Head teacher Maxine Crawford said that the atmosphere in school was "electric" after receiving the news. Mrs Crawford said: "Enterprise features in every lesson – it might not always be about running a business, but it is about an exciting and relevant approach to learning that gives ownership to children and lets them take the lead."

A spokesperson for Tenner Tycoon added: "This was an outstanding idea. There really were no others which could compete with the creativity and teamwork demonstrated by children at Brinsworth Howarth. We were very impressed."

Tenner Tycoon works in the same way as Rotherham Ready's successful "Make £5 Blossom" scheme where young people are encouraged to make money, make a difference and give back.

As one of ten winners, the Rotherham pupils will be invited to meet Peter Jones and a host of other succesful entrepreneurs in London.

Currently recognised as the most enterprising place in Britain, Rotherham secured the top prize in the Enterprising Britain competition 2010. Judges were impressed by the complete package for developing enterprise - with Rotherham Ready inspiring children about business as soon as they start school, and Rotherham Youth Enterprise providing all the support young people need to make their business dreams a reality.

News: Dormer open doors of Rotherham facility

By

Dormer Tools are hosting an open house event at their state-of-the-art facility in Rotherham.

The firm is part of Sweden's Sandvik Group and has developed from a traditional cutting tool manufacturer to one of the world's largest producers of solid carbide and high speed steel cutting tools. Their tools are used in cutting edge industries including the tooling designed specifically for cutting composite material in the aerospace sector.

The purpose-built facility on the Advanced Manufacturing Park incorporates a state-of-the-art training suite and a major research and development facility - one of only four such facilities worldwide. Both areas have played a significant role in providing customers across the UK with the right cutting tools for their applications.

The open house event on July 5 & 6, will cover CAD/CAM Solutions, Tooling, Work Holding Automation, Machining, Measuring and Inspection.

The research and development centre of excellence is tasked with identifying, devising and delivering new products and machining solutions. Products are only created if there is a market need.

The centre uses the latest machinery and a recent addition is the Heller FT 4000 five-axis machining centre, one of the most powerful machines of its type. Dormer experts will showcase their latest milling technology by performing product demonstrations at the event.

John O'Donoghue, general manager at Dormer Tools, said: "The two open days will provide a perfect opportunity for people from across the country to view our new-look productivity centre.

"Visitors will be able to witness the capabilities of our latest cuttings tools, as well as the performance of some of the world's best machines – a partnership which we feel will offer significant benefits to a host of sectors."

Dormer believes its decision to place greater emphasis on training staff and customers on their products is leading to an upturn in the amount of tools being sold to blue chip organisations as well as small and medium sized enterprises.

Following the move to the AMP in Rotherham, the firm saw a significant increase in sales of more than 20 per cent for 2010, reaching the pre-recession levels of two years ago.

News: Multitask Personnel Ltd tackles Rotherham's job market

By

A Rotherham recruitment consultant has established her own business with the help of the Rotherham Enterprise project.

Multitask Personnel Ltd operates from RiDO's Moorgate Crofts business centre and aims to support local job seekers and local companies by placing the right candidate not just for the job, but for the company and the team in which they will work.

Claire Thickett, managing director at Multitask Personnel, said: "After ten years in the business, initially with few qualifications, I'm proof that hard work can carry you a long way. It gives me great satisfaction to help those looking for employment to find the perfect job for them.

"Although there aren't many jobs at the moment and businesses aren't looking to recruit as often, setting up my own business with help from the Rotherham Youth Enterprise Project has been the best decision of my life."

The Rotherham Enterprise Project, which is part financed by The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), offered Claire essential advice on how to grow the business and six months subsidised work space at Moorgate Croft Business Centre.

News: Huthwaite develop sales academy for Rezidor

By

One of the fastest-growing hotel companies in the world, the Rezidor Hotel Group, is the latest leading brand to benefit from sales expertise at Huthwaite International in Rotherham.

The Wentworth company is a market leading behaviour change consultancy and specialises in consulting and training on all aspects of sales.

The operator of Radisson Blu and Park Inn hotels has worked closely with Huthwaite International to develop its highly successful sales academy, which combines a common sales approach based on identifying and satisfying customer needs with the flexibility to work within each brand and region that they operate.

Each year, up to 300 Rezidor sales staff attend training courses based on Huthwaite International's methodology. The current series of improvement initiatives, which includes sales, sales management and negotiation, continues to expand, with a new account development programme currently underway.

Jan Spooren, people development director at Rezidor said: "Our sales teams had to develop a deeper understanding of our clients' requirements, in order to propose solutions which aligned more closely to their business challenges.

"Huthwaite International also practiced what it preached, by working hard to understand our business and its challenges before putting together an appropriate
recommendation that would meet this objective."

During the recent recession, training sessions placed even greater emphasis on how to build value for each Rezidor brand in the face of unprecedented price pressure. More locally too, programmes were also adapted to address specific problems. For example, new hotels in Johannesburg suffering a significant drop in business immediately after the 2010 World Cup.

As well as boosting sales, Rezidor has also witnessed an improvement in staff retention, as employees recognise the company's increased commitment to their personal development. "This also feeds indirectly through to greater customer loyalty," adds Spooren, "as customers build trust and confidence in longer-serving
staff, resulting in stronger relationships."

News: Empty rates tax poses growth risk

By

Leading commercial property consultancy Knight Frank has warned the return to the charging of business rates on empty small business properties could stunt economic growth in Yorkshire.

The tax changes, which took effect from the beginning of April, reduce the level at which business rates kick in for empty non domestic property – from a rateable value of £18,000 down to £2,600.

Jeremy Wilson, partner with international property consultancy Knight Frank in Sheffield, and previously the vice chair of the Achieving Board in Rotherham said: "Businesses and developers need support to re-start growth and encourage investment but the new empty rates tax measures will substantially hinder this process.

"It is disappointing that the Chancellor decided not to return to the position prior to 2008 when empty office and retail properties received 50 per cent relief and industrial properties 100 per cent relief. In the current recession businesses are ultimately the key drivers for the economy to recover and they should not be subject to this additional tax.

"Prospects of a recovery in the commercial property market are being jeopardised by the controversial tax on unoccupied property. Businesses will be reluctant to relocate to new premises if they are left to pay business rates on their vacant existing premises, whilst developers cannot afford to incur empty rates whilst seeking occupiers for new premises.

"There is the fear that when the economy does return to full steam there'll be a lack of commercial properties on the market, not only in Yorkshire but nationwide."

Mr Wilson said that the tax is proving to be obstructive, with businesses being forced to take extreme measures to protect themselves during the tough economic conditions.

He added: "Properties are not left vacant deliberately and I do not believe a charge on empty property is an effective way of encouraging redevelopment of vacant sites across Yorkshire."

Knight Frank are a key player in the Rotherham commercial property market with recent deals including MTL Group's move to a new 300,000 sq ft advanced manufacturing facility at Brinsworth and UK Mail's relocation across Rotherham to the Magna 34 Business Park.

News: Pyronix launch world-first alarm system

By

Rotherham-based security equipment manufacturer, Pyronix, has recently launched the Enforcer, a world-first fully two way wireless alarm system incorporating a transmitter and a receiver in each wireless device.

The wireless system includes a control panel and a variety of wireless devices which all use the Pyronix two way wireless technology. The technology is a vital part of the system that keeps it reliable and provides a major advantage to the installer and user.

The Hellaby company is also aiming to stay ahead of the competition by producing the system "unbranded" allowing installers to control margins and use their own branding.

Tris Young, Marketing Manager at Pyronix, said: "The unique branding on the Enforcer provides installers with a fantastic sales and marketing opportunity, as it allows them to have a panel that is distinctive to them.

"Unlike other wireless brands, consumers will not be able to find the same product widely on the internet. Just imagine your own branded product, unique to you."

Sebastian Herrera, managing director of Pyronix, added: "In today's market you have to be unique and different to gain the competitive edge, therefore providing a panel that can have your own brand on it or non-branded enables you to stand out from the crowd."

Award-winning Pyronix has now grown into one of the leading players within the security industry and is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year.

News: Plans for the restoration of Wentworth Woodhouse revealed

By

Further details of the planned restoration of Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham have been unveiled.

The regeneration plans for the Grade 1 Listed building were first revealed by Rothbiz in March and now further details for a publicly accessible restored museum, 70 suite luxury hotel and spa have been announced.

A £26m project to restore the stables, riding school and mews court buildings and their conversion into high quality business space is also planned. It is hoped that the business premises alone would create over 500 net additional jobs and be home to 60 - 80 enterprises and 770 jobs.

The Newbold family, the owners of Wentworth Woodhouse since 1999, has been examining options for the long-term sustainable uses for the buildings in order to ensure the heritage is preserved and enjoyed for future generations, as well as using the opportunity to help generate employment in the locality.

There is a claim for damage against the Coal Authority for at least £100m, in respect of the damage caused by the deep and open cast mining, which is being disputed.

The proposal for the mansion house is to create a combination of publicly accessible restored museum to the central and grandest rooms, as well as a 70 suite luxury hotel and spa to the remainder. This proposal will revive the use of the house in such a way that minimises alteration and change to the historic building, whilst making best use of the magnificent spaces that can be open to and enjoyed by the public.

A survey to establish the urgency and extent of repairs necessary to the property, together with associated budget costs, has highlighted the extensive programme of repairs that is required to the fabric of all the listed properties. The conservation and alteration of the Grade I listed buildings needs to be carried out to an exceptionally high standard, and this affects the overall financial viability of the project.

Lead consultants, Purcell Miller Tritton have been working on the plans and an experienced technical team is in place including architects, cost consultants and property specialists to bring the project forward. It is hoped that it would begin next year and aspects to be completed in 2015.

An outline business plan for the business premises has been submitted in a bid to secure funding from the European Regional Development Fund and other sources of funding are currently being examined, such as the Regional Growth Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Owner Clifford Newbold said: "Our vision for the buildings of Wentworth Woodhouse is to find sustainable long term uses that are sensitive to the unique character of the site. Our ambition is to see Wentworth Woodhouse once again play its part in the regeneration of the area, creating employment and public enjoyment of this very special place."

The BBC 2 programme, "The Country House Revealed" will feature Wentworth Woodhouse on Tuesday 31st May at 9.00pm.

News: Rotherham's new Mayor to promote economic regeneration

By

The Mayor of Rotherham, councillor Shaun Wright has pledged to promote economic regeneration during his time in office.

The Rawmarsh councillor took the role of Mayor at the annual meeting of Rotherham Borough Council at Rotherham Town Hall on last week.

Councillor Wright believes economic regeneration and education are the keys to prosperity in any area and is determined to promote both during his term of office.

He said: "Economic regeneration is vital for an area to do well because it filters down and affects all sections of the population. But a vibrant economy needs well-educated and skilled young people to fill jobs. I never recognised the value of education until I had left school and began learning for my apprenticeship and then continued in further education."

This interest has continued throughout his life and so it was not surprising that Councillor Wright became the first-ever Rotherham Cabinet member for Children and Young Peoples Services in 2005.

He wants all young people to have the same advantages and to be able to look forward to satisfying lives and futures and to that end is a huge advocate of economic regeneration.

He has long been a champion for former coalfield communities and is a trustee of the Coalfields Regeneration trust, a grant-giving body funded by central Government that supports community-led regeneration projects.

He is also a trustee of Groundwork Dearne Valley, the environment charity that works with local people to improve their environment and provide opportunities for training.

Elected onto the authority in 2000, Councillor Wright manages Urban Green Space in Barnsley. Born in Royston, he was educated at Royston Comprehensive School and gained an apprenticeship in horticulture and management with Barnsley Borough Council, where he has worked for the past 27 years.

News: Dormer Tools launch iPhone Apps

By

An iPhone App capable of calculating the exact diameter of drill required for precise thread-creation operations has been developed by Rotherham-based cutting tool specialist, Dormer Tools.

The "Dormer Tools Threadsize Calculator" has been designed by Dormer to help engineers and machinists quickly and accurately select the optimum drill diameter needed to create a thread.

Thomas Junfors, senior project manager at Dormer Tools, said: "When you want to create a screw thread using a tap, you first need to pre-drill the hole.

"There are formulae that can be used to calculate the recommended tapping drill diameter, but as there are numerous different types and standards of taps available, the recommended dimensions can vary, so it is crucial to get this right. The App takes the user through each of the various steps and factors to calculate the right diameter for you.

"The user inputs the size of their desired thread, selects the process and relevant standard and the calculator determines the correct drill size to use."

Unlike similar applications currently available, Dormer's Threadsize Calculator is free to download from the iTunes App store and is the first in a series of Apps set to be launched by Dormer.

A "Product Selector" App which will promote increased productivity and efficiency by giving users personalised advice on the best cutting tool and operating parameters is currently in development and is due to be launched in 2012.

Thomas said: "At Dormer we are committed to helping our customers carry out their machining processes in the most efficient way possible.

"We invest significantly in research and development at our Advanced Manufacturing Park base, so that we can share our expertise with industry partners and customers alike.

"This App and the Apps to come all fit in with that ethos. It's about selecting the right tool for the job in order to get the best results."

News: Royal visit to Rotherham's award winning enterprise centre

By

Matrix @ Dinnington, the £3.4m business centre in Rotherham, was officially opened this week by HRH The Countess of Wessex.

The centre is the latest of the four purpose-built centres created by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and operated by their regeneration arm, Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RiDO).

During a tour of the building, she had the opportunity to meet with a number of Rotherham companies located at the centre including Freshlook Furniture (pictured), Benditnow, Castus, 3G Controls and AVA Training.

Currently recognised as the most enterprising place in the UK, the visit to Rotherham also follows the news that in March RiDO won the UK Business Incubation's (UKBI) 2011 Incubation Champion Award for the best integrated incubation and enterprise services in the country. This is the second time that Rotherham has won the award in the past six years.

Matrix can accommodate up to 41 companies in purpose-built office and workshops. It was built by Wildgoose Construction and has been operating since 2009. The two storey office and workshop units incorporate a biomass wood pellet heating system, thermal mass insulation, photovoltaic cells and a grey rainwater system.

Councillor Gerald Smith, Rotherham Council's cabinet member for Regeneration and Development Services, said: "Her Royal Highness saw the work of the centre's companies and heard about the innovative environmental features within the building.

"She appeared to be genuinely interested in both the companies' progress, and how the Dinnington site had been reclaimed and revitalised."

The Countess of Wessex went on to visit Sandvik's £4m European Centre of Excellence (SECoE) at Beighton Link Business Park in Rotherham.

News: Response Vehicle Lighting set to shine

By

A young Rotherham entrepreneur has turned his childhood hobby into a flourishing business thanks to his fascination with flashing lights.

With help from Rotherham Youth Enterprise (RYE), Sam Goddard launched his own company, Response Vehicle Lighting, just 12 months ago and it's going from strength to strength.

Sam developed the skills throughout his childhood until he could confidently get broken lights to work again. He found that there was a market on the internet for the products and maintenance services that he could offer.

After finishing his GCSEs, Sam decided to turn his hobby into a profession and visited business coaches at Rotherham Youth Enterprise (RYE) for some valuable advice and to discuss the way forward.

Sam said: "I met with Darren McDool who supported me with my business plan and found me local premises to work from. The team at RYE have helped me turn my dream into reality and have assisted in the set up of Response Vehicle Lighting which over the last 12 months has been an exciting and successful adventure."

In April last year, Sam registered as a sole trader and has since built up a range of new and refurbished vehicle lights. He has since supplied lights for highway maintenance, recovery, mountain rescue vehicles and private ambulances.

Jackie Frost from RYE said: "Sam came to us needing a little pushing in the right direction. He was one of our youngest ever budding entrepreneurs and he has made a great success of his company. I think he surprised himself at just how capable he is with meeting demand and deadlines- not bad for a young lad who liked to play with lights!"

News: MTL Group secure multimillion pound offshore wind farm contract

By

Rotherham contract-manufacturing specialist, MTL Group, has been awarded a multimillion pound contract to supply 97 Boat Landing Systems to a leading European foundations manufacturer for a German offshore wind farm in the North Sea.

The deal is MTL Group's largest export contract to date and the first announced since the company opened a new state-of-the-art factory in Brinsworth in March.

MTL Group is one of the fastest growing project manufacturing specialists in the metals sector and is a global supplier of secondary steelwork. It works with a global blue-chip customer base in the defence, construction equipment, rail and off-shore wind energy sectors.

They handle multi-million pound contracts for customers who manufacture large offshore foundation structures for the offshore and renewable energy sectors and are a major supplier of boat landing systems, nacelle bed plates, transition decks and plate girders.

Dr Henry Shirman, managing director at MTL said: "This is a major breakthrough for us in the European offshore wind market. In order to meet the high standards to the offshore sector, MTL Group has undergone the necessary audits to be accredited to supply offshore fabrications.

"The other main area our customers are benefiting from is our on-going investment in the latest state of the art equipment offering existing and new customers an enhanced value proposition. This has been well received by our customers in the offshore sector."

The investment in technology means that MTL's Rotherham facility boasts the largest laser in the UK and a 640-tonne robotic press, which is the biggest of its kind anywhere in the world. A new high definition bevel plasma cutter and a robotic tube cutter are in place, both specially designed to support the growth in orders from the offshore renewable energy sector.

Charles Hendry, minister of state for energy said: "MTL Group is a fine example of the engineering excellence that already exists here in the UK and I am delighted that our support has led to the company winning this lucrative contract. The government is committed to helping more British companies to follow MTL Group's lead.

"MTL Group has worked closely with DECC to increase the UK supply of secondary steelwork for the offshore wind sector. With DECC's support MTL Group has invested in state of the art machinery that meets the equirements of this growing sector.

"I want the UK to be a leader in the development and demonstration of new technologies for the growing offshore wind sector, and I am keen to see the UK supply chain grow to support this."

25 of MTL's 310 employees will be working on the project at the advanced manufacturing facility in Rotherham. Work is due to commence in July 2011 with the final delivery of boat landings to be delivered by March 2012.

News: Martek equip Trefin's entire fleet

By

Greek maritime company, Trefin Tankers, has recently equipped their entire fleet of vessels with the Lifeforce AED from Martek Marine to provide effective treatment in the event of any of their crew suffering a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) while at sea.

The Manvers company is the world leader in safety and environmental monitoring equipment for commercial ships.

Trefin specialises in chemicals transportation and their six vessels now carry Martek's defibulator.

Anthony Efstathiou, chartering & operations director at Trefin Tankers said: "Trefin Tankers are proud to equip their fleet with Lifeforce, the world's only marine approved defibrillator for treating Sudden Cardiac Arrest at sea. SCA kills three million people every year. By investing in Lifeforce, Trefin have demonstrated their commitment to crew welfare across the globe."

SCA is the world's biggest killer but using a defibrillator to restore a normal heart rhythm within the first three minutes can improve survival rates by up to a staggering 70%.

Whilst on a recent sales visit to five of the largest German Ship owners, Martek's product was called into action for real. Jonathan Love, Martek Marine's Regional Sales Manager for Southern Europe, was queuing at the airport when a passanger in front suddenly keeled over.

Jonathan explains: "I went straight to her and began to administer first aid and in applying the Lifeforce defibrillator to the casualty who was now unconscious and breathing erratically, I feared the worst.

"However, the system reported in detail that the patient's heart was functioning normally and the cause of the collapse was not related at this stage to any issue with her heart.

"In such cases, the Lifeforce unit will not administer a shock in a further stage of casualty protection. With her condition still deteriorating however, I kept the unit in place as advised by my training in case the primary condition, now believed to be the result of a head trauma from several years ago, triggered an SCA event."

News: Stadium construction project kicks off with search for local contractors

By

Local contractors are being sought by GMI Construction to supply products for the £20m community stadium for Rotherham United.

The club announced that Leeds-based GMI Construction, the company currently building the new civic offices for Rotherham Council, will construct the stadium on the Guest and Chrimes site, when they unveiled designs for the 12,000-seater venue in February.

Now the company is hosting a "meet the buyer" event at Magna in Rotherham later this month to raise the awareness of potential opportunities for local sub-contractors in relation to the construction works.

The event will bring together key decision makers from GMI Construction and local sub-contractors and suppliers from the Yorkshire and Humber area, in particular Rotherham-based businesses.

The event is being coordinated by The Construction Sector Network, an innovative initiative that has been established to lead and support the construction sector in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

News: Rotherham sites in running for Enterprise Zone status

By

Development sites in Rotherham have been named amongst seven proposals for the location of a new Enterprise Zone (or Zones) to be created in the Sheffield City Region.

The Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is currently considering the following proposals: A1M site, Bassetlaw; Courthouse Campus, Barnsley; Chesterfield Waterside; Dearne M1 Corridor; Markham Vale; The Modern Manufacturing Priority Area, Sheffield and Rotherham; Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield (RHADS) Business Park.

The Budget this year announced that the coalition government would create 21 new Enterprise Zones across England, with simplified planning rules, super-fast broadband and tax breaks for businesses. One of the main benefits that the zones will offer is a business rate discount worth up to £275,000 per eligible business over a five year period.

All business rates growth within the zone for a period of at least 25 years will be retained by the local area, to support the Partnership's economic priorities and ensure that Enterprise Zone growth is reinvested locally.

James Newman, Chairman of the Sheffield City Region LEP, said: "We invited submissions from across the Sheffield City Region by the deadline of 13 May, and the LEP Board will how consider those received with a view to making a final decision by the end of the month.

"This is a huge opportunity for the Sheffield City Region to maximise the economic growth that an Enterprise Zone will stimulate and in considering proposals the LEP Board will ensure it is focussed on Zones that will bring the most benefit to the Sheffield City Region as a whole, as well as meeting the Government's requirements."

The Dearne M1 Corridor proposal includes a series of sites totalling over 100 hectares building on the Dearne Valley Eco-Vision by focussing on the growth of eco-economy enterprises and the development of green technologies.

Through partnership work and securing significant funding, the former coalfields in the Dearne Valley were reclaimed as part of the UK's largest Enterprise Zone. Since the Dearne Valley was designated as an Enterprise Zone in 1995 it is estimated that around 10,000 jobs had been created in the area by 2002.

The proposal for the Modern Manufacturing Priority Area, Sheffield and Rotherham is a strategically important area along the Don Valley, which straddles the borders of Sheffield and Rotherham, and would form one of the largest concentrations of modern manufacturing in the UK.

The Zone that best meets the LEP's criteria will be put forward to the Government in June.

News: Materialise help to realise Jaguar's C-X75 concept car

By

Specialists from Materialise UK in Rotherham have worked with Jaguar Land Rover engineers to provide solutions for the unique design challenges associated with the company's revolutionary C-X75 concept car.

Based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham, Materialise UK, has the largest capacity of rapid prototyping equipment in Europe. Their alternative production techniques matched the designer's desire to use organic shapes in the car's interior cabin.

After collaborating with the Jaguar Land Rover teams to gain a full understanding of the component requirements in relation to the rest of the car, the Materialise engineers used their expertise in rapid prototyping processes to develop ideal solutions.

Due to the client requirements, the majority of the parts were produced in ABS plastic using the Materialise suite of Fused Deposition Modelling machines (FDM), which enabled the components to be constructed directly from the supplied 3D computer data. Materialise used its engineering experience and dedicated software to add the required internal strengthening ribs and structures to provide the components with integral strength and durability.

Other components not requiring such a high degree of functionality were produced by stereolithography on Materialise's patented "Mammoth" machines, allowing large components to be manufactured in single pieces. This offered a big advantage as large components of this type traditionally need to be cut and glued, thus compromising on strength and finish.

A further benefit of the techniques recommended by Materialise was the relative speed of the processes, which typically takes around 50% less time than conventional methods. This allowed the Jaguar Land Rover engineers additional time to refine their CAD designs.

Johnathan Andrews, Account Manager of Materialise UK said: "We were delighted to work alongside the Jaguar Land Rover teams to contribute to the next generation of concept vehicles. I hope that the automotive industry sits up and takes note of the forward thinking technologies that the Jaguar Land Rover engineers applied to this car.

"By utilising additive manufacturing technologies they have set the bar to a new level for concept design by being able to create organic forms and have a freedom of creation that was previously limited."

Project C-X75 was conceived to celebrate 75 years of Jaguar and the British marque recently announced that it will go in to production. The C-X75 is a state-of-the-art supercar that will be one of the fastest, low-emission vehicles in the world.

Ian Callum, design director at Jaguar said: "This will be one of the finest looking Jaguar's ever produced. We have to make changes to bring this car to the market, but I know it will retain all the visual impact of the original concept car."

By

Rotherham glass packaging manufacturer, Beatson Clark, has supplied family-run cyder and apple juice producer, Aspall, with lightweight bottles for a new product.

Suffolk-based Aspall has launched a new range of high quality vinegars following six months intensive consumer and trade research.

The 11-strong range which includes varieties of vinegar such as Malt, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Apple Balsamic Vinegar, is packaged in bespoke lightweight white flint 250ml and 350ml bottles produced at Beatson Clark's Greasborough Road facility.

News: U-Explore powers Youth Inspiration

By

Rotherham education specialist, U-Explore, has joined forces with Downing Street as part of a recently announced initiative created to inspire and raise the aspirations of young people.

What's Your Destination? - www.whatsyourdestination.co.uk - is a new, independent and charity sector-led initiative that aims to make it easier to find and access the many organisations that are working to inspire young people.

The initiative has support from a variety of organisations including the Princes Trust, Facebook, Media Trust, Microsoft and Work Inspiration, and was launched last week by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister as part of the overall Youth Inspiration initiative. It is currently focused on bringing together all interested stakeholders to help shape the initiative and is set for a summer release.

The Government outlined priorities and packages to support young people into employment which includes U-Explore's work on inspiration. Publishing a paper on "Supporting Youth Employment," Prime Minister David Cameron said: "This is about more than getting our economy back on track. It's about more than improving the jobless numbers. It's about changing people's lives. Showing our young people we believe in them and backing that faith with action.

"It's time to reverse the trend of rising youth unemployment that has held back our country for far too long and help our young people get the jobs on which their future – and ours – depends."

The What's Your Destination? site has been developed and designed by U-Explore, building on its existing technology and expertise, and will now be developed from the initial beta site, which has been positioned to support the Prime Minister's announcement, to the release of the main site in late August.

Andy Pickles, CEO at U-Explore, said: "We are incredibly proud to be developing and powering "What's Your Destination?" to support the Youth Inspiration campaign. U-Explore was set up with the sole purpose to inspire and inform young people about their futures, and the campaign completely resonates with our vision and ethos.

"We are introducing local interfaces in partnership with local authorities such as Lancashire County Council to signpost students, parents and teachers to products and websites to support progression and raise aspirations, and so this was a natural extension to offer our expertise and technology to power a national interface.

"I think it's important to communicate that this is not "another" website for young people but an interface to enable them to find the sites and support that already exist; it's just a case of getting them connected.

"We look forward to launching the main site in August with partners and helping young people to find that inspiration they need to make a positive progression."

In 2009, the Templeborough company helped to create the Work Inspiration toolkit designed to help employers across the country "turn work experience into work inspiration."

News: Willmott Dixon recruits Rotherham apprentices

By

Willmott Dixon Partnerships has recruited four local apprentices in Rotherham as part of the National Apprenticeship Service's 100 in 100 campaign.

Stacey Bann, Jack Smith, Tyler Shaw and Daniel Essex will join Willmott Dixon's Rotherham branch through the company's pledge to recruit eight local apprentices each year and its partnership with Rotherham College of Arts and Technology (RCAT).

Willmott Dixon Partnerships is working with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council's arms length management organisation 2010 Rotherham to deliver a repairs service to 12,000 council-owned properties in the areas of Wentworth South, Wentworth Valley, Rother Valley West and Rother Valley South.

David Coldwell, Rotherham branch manager at Willmott Dixon said: "We were keen to recruit Building Maintenance Operations apprentices but there were no college providers to deliver the training in the local area.

"We contacted the National Apprenticeship Scheme and Rotherham College of Arts and Technology and both organisations were willing to investigate the options, meet to discuss requirements and find a way forward. We were thrilled when months of hard work paid off and the college was given centre approval to deliver the training programme.

"It's allowed us to recruit four new local apprentices and give two existing employees, Nick Booth and Robert Lane, the opportunity to further their careers.

"Through our contract with 2010 Rotherham we're aiming to provide opportunities for eight apprentices every year. It is our aim to leave a lasting legacy in the communities where we are working and this is an important step forward, not just for Willmott Dixon, but also local youngsters and an opportunity for new qualifications and jobs to be created in the area. We would welcome the involvement of other local companies who wish to invest for tomorrow rather than just today."

Charles Grayson, senior business advisor at RCAT, added: "We are focused on supporting the training needs of local employers and opening career opportunities for our region's young people.

"The Building Maintenance Operations apprenticeship offers a wide range of construction skills ranging from carpentry and joinery to painting and decorating, and even maintenance plumbing.

"We received over 100 applications and the six successful candidates have really shown the enthusiasm, drive and willingness learn which embeds the ethos of apprenticeship training today."

Stacey Bann, is one of the apprentices who has started work with Willmott Dixon. She said: "I did a six month training programme through 2010 Rotherham and learnt basic construction skills, like plastering and tiling. It helped me to realise that I wanted to do plastering as a career, but I couldn't find a job and ended up being unemployed for five months which was horrible.

"When I wake up in the morning I need to know that I've got something to do and a routine because I like to be active. I've always preferred doing practical things so a hands on role is perfect for me.

"Finding out that I'd got the apprenticeship was fantastic and I just can't wait to start work and training for my industry qualifications."

The 100 in 100 Apprenticeship campaign has the aim of 100 South Yorkshire companies committing to recruit or start to train 100 apprentices in 100 days.

News: Funding bids invited by Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership

By

The Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is inviting applications from potential Projects and Programmes for Round 2 of the Government's Regional Growth Fund (RGF).

Round 2 of the RGF invites submissions from both Projects and Programmes – the key difference being that Programme bids must demonstrate a clear over-arching investment strategy for a specific geographical area, rather than for individual sites.

The LEP will provide endorsement for eligible Project bids and, where possible, play a co-ordinating role for suitable programme bids within the City Region.

James Newman, Chairman of the LEP, said: "The Partnership has a key role to play in bringing together stakeholders from across the City Region and, in particular, is keen to have a co-ordinating role for Programme bids to the Fund as far as possible, while providing its backing to suitable strategic Project bids.

"We want to see submissions which demonstrate a significant contribution to the LEP's objectives and priorities for the City Region and crucially that they contribute to economic growth and the creation of jobs and private sector investment."

In Round 1, Doncaster Council and its private sector partners secured £18m from the Fund to progress The Gateway to the Sheffield City Region project. 21 bids were submitted from the Sheffield City Region to the fund under round 1 with the Local Enterprise Partnership Board endorsing bids for FARRRS, Chesterfield Waterside, Markham Vale and the Barnsley Dearne Employment and Housing Growth Initiative.

News: A57 planning application submitted

By

The planning application for the £14.7m transport scheme to upgrade the A57 from junction 31 of the M1 to Todwick crossroads has been submitted.

In addition to improving safety and addressing capacity issues, the scheme is expected to bring huge economic and regeneration benefits to the area.

Planning permission for the initial scheme was secured in 2009 for a dual carriageway between and a new roundabout replacing the existing crossroads.

The new scheme is slightly different from the one previously supported by the DfT. This reflects the drop in funding from the Government; the disbanding of Yorkshire Forward, which was also contributing to the scheme, and the cuts to local government.

Under the revised scheme the road will have a signalised crossing to replace the plan for a subway under the road and, as a result, the road will also have a 50mph speed limit instead of the original 70mph limit.

The scheme imrpoves an important section of road between the M1 and A1 and supports the continued regeneration of the former coalfields at Dinnington which is now a thriving business location.

The Department for Transport has granted £11.8m for improvements and the council have themselves committed £2.9m for the long-awaited scheme.

News: New Channels move to larger premises in Rotherham

By

Leading TV, satellite and digital installation company New Channels has successfully relocated its operations across the borough to a larger office space in North Anston, Rotherham.

The move highlights the companies' significant growth since it was formed by directors Mike Sendall and Phillip Flinders 22 years ago.

Moving from Swallownest, the firm has taken a two floor unit on the North Anston Trading Estate, close to junction 31 of the M1 and the new premises will house a state of the art call centre, demonstration room, repair hub, director's suite and office space for 25 operational staff.

Mike Sendall, director at New Channels, said: "Our operations have grown considerably since we opened in 1989 and we hope this is set to continue over the coming years."

Phillip Flinders, also a Director at New Channels added: "The move is a key step towards our goal of been recognised as the leading digital homes specialist across Central and North England."
