News: Newburgh secures Perkins engine contract

By

Newburgh Engineering has secured a prestigious contract with one of the world's best known engine manufacturers, Perkins Engines Company Limited.

Newburgh's Rotherham site won a contract to produce engine components after successfully completing Perkins' stringent supplier tendering process.

Newburgh's founding site, based in Bradwell, Derbyshire, has previously worked on smaller contracts for Perkins, but this contract win is a considerable boost for the Rotherham site's dedicated team.

Newburgh is a specialist contract manufacturer of component parts and assemblies for the nuclear, defence, oil and gas, petrochemical, aerospace and power generation industries.

Formed in 1932 and based in Peterborough, Perkins manufactures diesel and gas engines with thousands of different specifications in market sectors including agricultural, construction and electric power. Nearly 18 million pieces of equipment worldwide have ran- or are running – with Perkins power. The company was acquired by Caterpillar Inc in 1998 for US$1.325 billion, creating the world's largest diesel engine manufacturer.

Matthew Jewitt, commercial manager at Newburgh, said: "We are overjoyed to have been awarded this prestigious contract with such a well-known, long-established company."

Newburgh utilises manufacturing cells at their Templeborough facility, dedicated groups of resources operated by a team of multi-skilled individuals that are committed to producing a product or products for one customer. This provides the expertise and manufacturing capability to produce high quality engine components.

Vincent Middleton, managing director at Newburgh, added: "This is a fantastic achievement for the Rotherham team, who have worked tirelessly to secure a contract which will see us build a working partnership with Perkins as we move forward into 2012."

News: Rotherham outdoor market is the best

By

The street market in Rotherham town centre has been named as Britain's Best Market by the country's leading markets organisation.

The National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) awarded Rotherham first prize in the category of "Best Street / Outdoor Market" at their national awards ceremony held recently in Birmingham.

NABMA has successfully promoted the interests of its local authority members for over 80 years. The competition is important in raising the profile of individual markets and bringing media attention to winning markets.

Rotherham has been a successful market town for over 800 years - its original royal market charter was granted by King John in the year 1207. The outdoor market sees 44 quality stalls line Effingham Street every Tuesday.

Retail marketing consultant, Mary Portas, saw for herself how the bustling, lively market brings the town centre to life when she visited Rotherham last September.

Robin Lambert, general manager of the markets, said: "The market attracts traders from across the region and beyond and offers a range of quality goods at great prices.

"The market gives shoppers a great reason to Shop Local and the comparably high number of visitors in the town centre on street market day gives the town a real buzz.

"I'd encourage anyone who's not visited before to give our award winning market and sample the great value fresh food, clothing & accessories, electricals, textiles and home-ware."

Cllr Gerald Smith, Cabinet Member for Town Centres, Economic Growth and Prosperity, added: "We knew following the Mary Portas visit that we had got things right in Rotherham but to be voted the best in the whole country is a significant honour and one that we are rightly proud of.

"A great deal is being done to ensure that Rotherham is an attractive place for all shoppers and this significant award should go even further to attracting people to this wonderful town."

News: Apprentices work wise at Newburgh

By

Rotherham-based Newburgh Engineering is attracting good candidates for its apprenticeship scheme through the innovative work-wise programme.

The programme has been developed by Business & Education South Yorkshire and a partnership of local manufacturing and engineering companies in response to their concerns that not enough young people are attracted to the sector as well as not having the basic work ready skills to take up apprenticeships and jobs.

Newburgh is a specialist contract manufacturer of component parts and assemblies for the nuclear, defence, oil and gas, petrochemical, aerospace and power generation industries. They were co-founders of the programme.

Vince Middleton, managing director at Newburgh, said: "We needed one route to engage with schools and provide meaningful work experience monitoring and grading the future employability of the young person, and providing guidance where needed.

"The "hands on" approach also helps equip young individuals with the skills and attitude necessary to get a job straight from school, living up to the work-wise description as the "ultimate interview.""

Adam Flood and Ryan Froggatt are both work-wise success stories. Their work-wise placements gave them the relevant experience and hence the edge over other applicants to secure one of the highly competitive apprenticeships at Newburgh, after impressing in interviews.

After starting a course Adam became aware of an apprenticeship at Newburgh - he applied and was given the job. The daily diary he kept during his work-wise placement meant he could refer back to and reference some of his experiences at Newburg in his job interview. He is now an apprentice at the Sizer Pelleting Solutions (part of the Newburgh Group) and is currently studying for his NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Maintenance.

Adam said: "The work-wise programme gave me hands on experience at the job and made me feel comfortable within the working environment."

Ryan applied for an apprenticeship after having a really positive work-wise experience at Newburgh. He was offered an apprenticeship on Newburgh's New ERA programme and is currently studying at Brinsworth Academy of Engineering for an NVQ Level 2. For Ryan the work-wise programme gave him a confidence boost giving him the motivation to work hard to master new skills.

Andy Millward, apprentice training instructor at Newburgh, said: "Our apprenticeships are tailored to the individual, so we look at what interests them and what they are good at.

"The future of many engineering firms depends on the training and recruitment of the younger generation."

News: Rotherham jobs saved in CTS deal

By

Rotherham-based cash machine installer Complete Technical Services (CTS) has been bought out of administration in a deal that will secure 57 jobs.

Lindsey Cooper and Russell Cash from accountancy firm Baker Tilly were appointed as joint administrators of the Hope Street firm on January 25.

They led the acquisition by New Wave ATM Installations, a subsidiary of UK cash machine operator, Bank Machine. Itself a part of the US company, Cardtronics.

Lindsey Cooper said: "CTS, which was established in 1996, had suffered in recent years from the effects of the maturing ATM market and, despite efforts to restructure its cost base, was issued with a winding up petition by HMRC in December.

"We are extremely pleased to have concluded the sale of the CTS business, preserving all 57 jobs and the associated experience and expertise held within this established business.

"CTS has an excellent reputation and it is because of this that it has been acquired by a company positioned to refocus and further develop its service and its people in line with the challenging requirements of the ATM market."

News: Young Enterprise "unbelievably important for Britain's future"

By

Business and enterprise education charity, Young Enterprise received praise from Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg at a recent gala evening.

Young Enterprise helps young people learn about business and the world of work in the classroom under the guidance of volunteers from 3,500 companies.

Held at Sheffield City Hall and organised by students, the event brought together the South Yorkshire business community and the Young Enterprise volunteers along with the students who have benefited from the charity's programmes.

Mr Clegg said: "The basic purpose of Young Enterprise is such an unbelievably important one. It is important for the country and especially for South Yorkshire as a sub-region.

"It is important to have young people inspired by what Young Enterprise does - to create their own futures; create companies; and create jobs."

The aim of the evening was to raise funding and secure more volunteers to provide young people in the county with the invigorating and challenging experience of running a business.

Ben Marshall from Wickersley School in Rotherham, winner of last year's Managing Director Award, was the Master of Ceremonies.

Meryl White, chair of South Yorkshire Young Enterprise, said: "This event was an opportunity for the Young Enterprise students to demonstrate how they had set up and run YE companies in this region.

"We are delighted by the support we've had from businesses across the region and want to give our thanks to the Deputy Prime Minister for giving up his time to talk to businesses and to the young people for organising this event."

News: Long term hope for tram-train project

By

Innovative tram-trains running between Rotherham and Sheffield could become a long term operation rather than a trial.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), Northern Rail and Network Rail have been working together on a pilot project, first announced in 2009, that received the backing of the government with a £150,000 grant in 2011.

Passengers could see tram-trains running between Sheffield and Rotherham on the current freight route from Rotherham and then joining the Sheffield Supertram network at Meadowhall South. Three trams an hour would run all day from Sheffield city centre through Rotherham Central to Parkgate retail park.

The pilot project would inform the government on the use of the tram-trains as a cheaper alternative in extending transport networks. It could lead to tram-trains being introduced in South Yorkshire in 2014.

An update from the SYPTE to the South Yorkshire Integrated Transport Authority indicates that running a trial would require significant investment of up to £55m.

As the project progressed it became apparent that the feasibility of a longer term passenger service between Sheffield and Rotherham should be considered.

With agreement from the Department for Transport (DfT), partners have developed a business case that combines the tram-train trial with the project to increase capacity on the existing Supertram network in Sheffield.

The £18m project to introduce four new tram vehicles secured £12.3m from the DfT last year. To save on costs, the vehicle requirement for both aspects of the combined project would be met by one supplier with the same vehicle design.

Using seven additional vehicles, the routes would be operated by Stagecoach with special vehicles travelling every 20 mins from Parkgate to Sheffield Cathedral via Rotherham Central and Meadowhall South.

An £8.5m redevelopment of Rotherham Central is nearing completion.

The operation would need subsidising in the short term and additional stations along the route (such as Templeborough) is not part of the scheme at this stage but "these will be costed options to be considered at a later date."

The SYPTE added: "There would be significant new investment required on the heavy rail side. This includes new platforms at Meadowhall South, Rotherham Central and Parkgate. The line from Meadowhall South to Parkgate will require electrification and new track work is required at Meadowhall South and Parkgate. The cost of this infrastructure investment is in the region of £15m - £20m."

The signs from the government are positive. The business case for the investment was taken to DfT's Rail Investment Board in December 2011 and approved. A decision by ministers and the Treasury is expected soon.

News: Kiddicare to open flagship store in Rotherham

By

Kiddicare, the UK's leading specialist online retailer of baby products, is to open a new flagship store in Rotherham.

Kiddicare.com, acquired by Morrisons in 2011, has agreed to take over the leases of 10 former Best Buy stores from Carphone Warehouse.

This includes the 45,000 sq ft unit at Parkgate Shopping in Rotherham.

Investment of around £15m will convert the stores to the full Kiddicare offering. The move adds to its existing flagship store in Peterborough – the largest kids store in Europe.

The company estimates that around 700 new jobs will be created across the country with the first store expected to open before the autumn of 2012.

The first location to open will be put to a customer preference vote via social media. Once open, all of the stores will be rated on the customer service experience delivered, with the results displayed to customers, setting Kiddicare apart from its competitors.

At these destination stores customers will be able to benefit from Kiddicare's VIB (Very Important Baby) service, as well as enjoy hands-on learning about products and free car seat fittings. For parents purchasing in a new retail category for the first time, this will enable them to experience the exceptional value and support that the multi-channel model Kiddicare offers, including purchasing by app, kiosks, and online – with free next day delivery in a one hour time slot as standard.

Scott Weavers-Wright, chief executive of Kiddicare, said: "These 10 flagship stores will put Kiddicare within easy driving distance of nearly a third of the UK population.

"As well as being fantastic destination superstores for families across the country, they are the ideal platform for Kiddicare.com to lead the baby market by giving a true multi-channel experience."

The award-winning online retailer was acquired by Morrisons in 2011 for £70m. The acquisition was the first step in developing Morrisons online business.

The company trades separately as kiddicare.com, led by Scott and Elaine Weavers-Wright. It was founded in 1974 by Neville and Marilyn Wright and has grown into the UK's leading specialist online retailer of baby products. 400,000 customers placed orders in the last 12 months.

Turnover in the 2010 financial year was £37.5m and has grown by 75% in the past three years using leading web technology and picking software. Over 80% of sales are through the online channel with the business now set to offer in store channels from units at key retail park destinations in the UK.

Electronics retailer Best Buy, closed their 45,000 sq ft store at Parkgate earlier this month after it made the decision to close all 11 of their UK stores.

News: Torrent Trackside expand Rotherham operation

By

Torrent Trackside, a company which supplies specialist equipment and machinery to the railway maintenance industry has moved its Rotherham depot to larger premises.

In a letting arranged by Rotherham commercial property agents, Burgess Commercial, the company has taken a new lease on a 13,000 sq ft light industrial unit at the Meadowbank Industrial Estate moving its operation from a smaller unit on nearby Masbrough Street.

The Staffordshire company has seven centres across the UK and provides a range of services to the railway maintenance industry including plant hire and staff training.

Paul Collier, manager of the Rotherham depot for Torrent Trackside, said: "The increasing growth of our business meant we were looking to move to larger premises. We chose to work with Burgess Commercial of Rotherham, who are specialists in industrial lettings, and helped us to secure this unit, which is ideally suited to our purposes.

"It has two trailer-height doors which will enable us to separate the equipment coming in from that going out, increasing the efficiency of our operation.

"The location also provides excellent access to the motorway system, which is important in minimising the time it takes to transport the machinery out to customers."

Neil Keally, director of Burgess Commercial, added: "It is always good to be able to work with national businesses like Torrent Trackside that are choosing to expand their South Yorkshire operations.

"We were very pleased to assist them in finding premises which would enable them to achieve the ideal operating environment for the movement of specialist hire equipment.

News: CBRE see opportunities in the Yorkshire property sector

By

Diminishing supply levels combined with steady take-up figures in the Yorkshire industrial and logistic market paints a more positive picture for the year ahead according to property firm CBRE.

Toby Vernon, senior director of Industrial Agency at CBRE, said: "2006 and 2007 saw a major increase in the supply of new build, speculatively built, large scale logistics schemes. This coincided with a significant contraction in occupier demand as the recession bit and the Yorkshire region, like most across the UK, was faced with an over-supply of industrial stock.

"Throughout 2008 and 2009 the market was sluggish but demand has returned to form with a substantial amount of building take-up over the last two years. With no speculative development taking place during this time, supply levels began to diminish and we are now in a much stronger position with the market imbalance correcting itself."

CBRE's research into logistics buildings over 100,000 sq ft indicates that 2011 take-up in the Yorkshire region fell back in line with the UK-wide statistics. Coupled with a complete lack of speculative development, this means that current availability of existing buildings represents only 16 months of supply.

Recent logistics lettings in Yorkshire have been from large retailers such as Amazon and ASOS and with tenants looking for quality, CBRE expects good things for the existing stock and eventually a requirement for pre-let led development in core areas.

Vernon added: "Looking ahead to 2012, we expect that the steady levels of take-up will continue and that we will see an increase in demand from other UK regions where building supply is far more limited.

"We expect that the online retailers and major high street chains will continue to be the main drivers for logistics demand. As supply levels reduce further, rental levels will harden and the prospects for pre-let led development will begin to improve."

Recent deals involving CBRE in Rotherham include American engineering company, Thetford Ltd moving to Manvers and Home Décor's 110,000 sq ft pre-let at Woodhouse Link.

News: Waverley Link re-think

By

Plans for a link road to the massive regeneration project at Waverley in Rotherham will have to go back to the drawing board as green space in Sheffield looks set to permanently protected as part of an initiative for the Queen's diamond jubilee this summer.

The Waverley Link Road aims to support regeneration and economic growth at the Advanced Manufacturing Park and Waverley developments in Rotherham.

The AMP is the UK's premier advanced manufacturing technology park, providing world-class advanced manufacturing technology solutions to ensure repetitive advantage for industry. It is home to the likes of Boeing and Dormer Tools and Rolls-Royce are planning major investments in new facilities.

Led by UK Coal, the £100m Waverley regeneration project on the site of the former Orgreave colliery is the biggest brownfield site development in South Yorkshire and covers 741 acres, an area bigger than Sheffield city centre.

The planned link road would be a 1.2 mile long single-carriageway joining Retford Road and Highfield Lane. The planned route would have used a portion of Woodhouse Mill Recreation Ground, also known locally as Woodhouse Mill Playing Fields.

Sheffield Council, whilst supporting the wider Waverley and Lower Don Valley regeneration initiatives does not support the loss of land through the playing field to accommodate the proposed road line.

A £21m route over the River Rother and railway line was discounted on the grounds of cost and the ideal route proposed by planners was to cross the river and the Yorkshire Water sewage works. However, Yorkshire Water stated that this £10m route was unacceptable to them as it affected future expansion of the Sewage Treatment Works.

Costs for the chosen route were reduced in the hope of securing government funds for the £8.57m scheme. The remainder of the costs were to be met by UK Coal and the council.

A bid from Rotherham Council for £6.961m from the Department for Transport (DFT) was turned down in December.

The DFT sated that they recognise "that there is a case for additional capacity in this area but the currently proposed scheme does not appear to be deliverable. Rotherham Borough Council are invited to work with Sheffield and other stakeholders and to propose a resolution to the issue by 31 March 2012."

As part of the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge in 2012, the Woodhouse Mill Recreation Ground will be dedicated as a "Queen Elizabeth II Field" and be managed as a recreation ground / playing field for continued public benefit.

The bid secured 68 votes in the national initiative that involved local communities directly nominating and voting for local playing fields.

News: Dreams and Smyths open new stores in Rotherham

By

New outlets for Dreams and Smyths Toys are open at Cortonwood Retail Park after the construction of 32,500sq ft of new retail space was completed ahead of schedule.

St Paul's Developments appointed JF Finnegan to carry out the design and construction of the three new units, with CBRE acting as Development Monitoring Surveyor.

The developer secured pre-lets of 15,000sq ft to Irish toy retailing giant Smyths Toys Superstores and 10,000 sq ft to major bed retailer Dreams PLC prior to work commencing on site in May of last year.

An additional 7,500sq ft unit is available for occupancy and is being marketed by BNP Paribas and Jones Lang LaSalle.

Gary Smith, director at JF Finnegan, said: "Work has progressed well on site throughout all construction stages and we are delighted to have been able to hand over the new units ahead of schedule.

"Cortonwood continues to go from strength to strength with new tenants and is a superb example of former colliery site regeneration."

Over the last 20 years, JF Finnegan has constructed around 250,000 sq ft of retail units on the 50 acre site that was made possible by Enterprise Zone status. St Paul's Developments forward-funded Cortonwood Retail Park, which is on the Rotherham side of the border with Barnsley, and subsequently sold into the Enterprise Zone Tax investment market for £13m.

David Newton, managing director of St Paul's Developments, said: "To be welcoming yet more high profile retailers to our tenant mix at Cortonwood is fantastic news for both the development itself and the wider region.

"We are incredibly proud of the retail park and the success it continues to enjoy. The available 7,500sq ft unit presents an excellent opportunity for another tenant to join Cortonwood and our agents are currently handling interest in this space."

Discussions are also taking place regarding a further 95,000 sq ft of retail space on the site. Plans are being drawn up for six units of various sizes to replace existing the UPS distribution unit. Developers estimate that retail warehousing on the site would create 95 jobs.

News: AMRC planning next centre of excellence

By

A new UK centre of excellence for industrial design, prototyping and structural testing is being planned for Rotherham.

The University of Sheffield's Advanced Manufacturing Institute (AMI) is looking to extend the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing to provide space for designers to explore and research new manufacturing applications under the same ethos as the AMRC.

A 2,700 sq m extension to the existing building would bring together design and prototyping with structural testing, key areas in the research of high-value manufacturing sectors such as aerospace, energy, motorsport and medical technology.

The AMI was created in response to the continued success and growth of the AMRC and includes the AMRC with Boeing, the Nuclear AMRC and the new Knowledge Transfer Centre, all on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham.

Plans have now been submitted for the Design Prototyping and Testing Centre (DPTC) on the Advanced Manufacturing Park, and the AMI is currently working to secure funding for the development.

Design by Bond Bryan, the proposed centre will include 1,300 sq m of research offices and a 900 sq workshop area. It will also have a generous entrance with a foyer and forecourt.

The extended building will employ around 40 exceptional design engineers plus support staff. Existing testing equipment in the building will be complemented by new rapid prototyping and stuctural testing facilities.

By bringing together a design, R&D and testing, the AMRC hopes that it will result in clusters of companies setting up close to centres of excellence, attracting inward investors into the area.

Prof Keith Ridgway CBE, Executive Dean of the AMI, said: "It's early days for this project, but we hope it will be the next stage in the development of the Advanced Manufacturing Institute.

"Design, prototyping and testing are essential parts of the manufacturing cycle, and complement our established world-leading expertise in machining, forming and assembly.

"The proposed new centre will focus on the design, manufacture and test of the high value components used in the aerospace, nuclear and offshore renewable energy sectors. The aim will be to assist UK companies to be competitive and enter these high value supply chains."

In October, the University of Sheffield was awarded £9.2m by the government for a £20.5m training centre for advanced manufacturing. Based in a new 5,000 sq m building, to be situated close to the AMRC and the Nuclear AMRC on the Advanced Manufacturing Park, the centre will provide training for companies along the supply chain in high-value manufacturing sectors.

By

Rotherham-based Yorkshire Crisp Company has produced a special Tomato, Basil and Mozzarella crisp for German company, Hussel.

The Waleswood company produces hand-made gourmet crisps made from local vegetables and totally natural flavours. The new export deal is through Delimondo, a German company that imports 1,500 exclusive products for leading five star hotels, catering firms and fine food stores.

The crisps are called "Friendchips" and are available in the popular 100g stay-fresh, re-sealable drums that Yorkshire Crisps has become well-known for.

Hussel, which is part of Douglas Holding AG, has 274 confectionery outlets in Germany and 16 in Austria, selling chocolate, sweets and bakery products.

Horace Ostwald, of Delimondo, said: "Yorkshire Crisps were chosen because of their excellent quality, great variety of tastes and the fact that the drums have a long shelf life of seven months compared to three to four months for bags."

Yorkshire Crisps won the Export Award for the Regional Food Group for Humber and Yorkshire in 2010 for demonstrating passion and determination in embracing global export markets. The business, which was initially a regional operation has expanded and their gourmet crisps are now exported to over 14 countries around the globe, including the Far East.

News: 3D system makes working with nuclear components a Virtual Reality

By

A specially designed Virtual Reality (VR) system has been installed at the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Nuclear AMRC) in Rotherham that will help engineers get to grips with massive components weighing 50 tonnes.

Based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park, The £25m Nuclear AMRC is a joint initiative between the University of Sheffield, The University of Manchester, and a consortium of industry partners. It provides a focal point for the bulk of the UK civil nuclear manufacturing industry supply chain.

Leading company, Virtalis has designed and installed two systems on the world-class centre of excellence that will help experts work with the massive components needed in the next generation of nuclear power stations, and ensure that UK companies have the expertise to be able to manufacture them.

They will be used for virtual assembly, design validation, virtual training and design for maintenance.

Rab Scott, Head of Virtual Reality and Simulation at the Nuclear AMRC, explained: "The visualisation capability Virtalis has delivered will make our technology more accessible than ever before. This is because what makes the nuclear sector different is the sheer scale of components and their machining tools.

"We're talking about massive components weighing 40 or 50 tonnes. Any small alterations that need to be made to components that size should be made where they are manufactured, rather than at the assembly stage.

"We believe that our VR systems will give us an accurate, virtual prove-out, with all alterations made prior to shipping. We'll achieve this by scanning the components and dropping them into their virtual environment to check they fit with the other components in the assembly."

The centre boasts a multi-sided VR system called an "ActiveCube." It has the appearance of a floating 3.2m. glass box and creates an immersive experience with two to four people able to enter the virtual world inside.

A second interactive 3D visualisation system called and "ActiveWall" has been designed for up to 25 people to experience.

Scott added: "We envisage three to four people interacting in our ActiveCube with their movements within the virtual environment being watched by up to 25 more observers via the ActiveWall.

"We also see them being linked with other VR centres worldwide to allow us to carry out international design, manufacturing and assembly reviews, as well as complex training exercises."

The world's leading companies are already partners at the Nuclear AMRC, eager to access the groundbreaking technology. Key industrial members include Rolls-Royce, Westinghouse, Areva, Sheffield Forgemasters and Tata Steel.

News: Veterinary college reports of Inditherm's success

By

A veterinary medicine college in Norway has proved the versatility and effectiveness of the Inditherm warming system for large animal surgery.

Rotherham-based Inditherm has developed products using low voltage carbon polymer technology to provide heat. The AIM-listed firm has focused on the medical sector where their patient warming system ensures that every surgical patient can be warmed at the same running cost as a light-bulb.

Last year, The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), issued guidance that supports the use of Inditherm patient warming systems for patients undergoing operations which carry risk of inadvertent hypothermia.

Keeping horses warm during anaesthesia is difficult and the consequences of hypothermia are slower recovery and increased mortality rates. The Norwegian College of Veterinary Medicine purchased the Inditherm warming system for use during equine surgical procedures, having been unable to find any other effective warming system for horses.

Henning Mörch, the main anaesthesia nurse at the college, reported after his initial use of the Inditherm system that this was the first time in his 20 years of sedating horses he had managed to maintain their temperature. He went on to say how much better the quality of the recovery has been, and how much sooner the patients are able to stand up after surgery.

The college has, to date, treated over 1,000 horses on the mattresses and have had no problems keeping them warm since they introduced the Inditherm system. They recently reported that the products still function optimally, which illustrates that the Inditherm system is a truly robust and reliable system, even in such a demanding application.

Mr Mörch reported that since using the Inditherm system, the college had seen a noticeable reduction in mortality during anaesthesia in their equine patients, proving the efficacy of preventing intraoperative hypothermia. He went on to say that the college now consider that it would be irresponsible to anaesthetise their patients without the Inditherm mattress.

Nick Bettles CEO at Inditherm, based in Manvers, said: "We have known from our experience in the military field applications that our patient warming systems can meet the toughest demands, but this type of veterinary use is further testament to the versatility and durability of Inditherm's products.

"Our PetTherm range is also the system of choice in one of the UK's newest and most prestigious small animal referral centres, so we hope we can start to grow our reputation in the veterinary markets."

News: Newburgh delivers groundbreaking gearbox

By

Rotherham-based Newburgh Engineering has completed an integral component for the Bloodhound SSC supercar that aims to break the world land speed record by achieving the supersonic speed of 1,000mph.

The high-tech precision engineering sub-contractor is a project sponsor and has completed Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) gearbox casings for use in the car. They were presented to the Bloodhound SSC team at the recent Autosport International 2012 in Birmingham.

Newburgh is a specialist contract manufacturer of component parts and assemblies for the nuclear, defence, oil and gas, petrochemical, aerospace and power generation industries.

News: Improving sales at Crawshaw

By

Crawshaw's, the Rotherham-based meat focussed retailer, has seen an improvement in sales in the period since reporting "very disappointing" retail sales in October.

In an report on its interim results for the six months ended 31 July 2011, the board reported "very disappointing" retail sales reflecting difficult trading conditions on the high street.

Richard Rose, chairman at Crawshaw's, said at the time: "We are determined to reverse the decline in sales and to return once again to profitable growth."

Sales for the first half were level at £9.4m but like for like sales were down 4% in the six months to the end of July. Profit after tax was also level at £0.1m.

In the eight weeks since that half year end, like for like sales had declined by 10% but a report on the Christmas trading period states that sales have been improving since then, and that Christmas trading was much improved.

Total sales for the five weeks to January 1 2012 were up 9% on the previous year. Like for like sales at established stores were up 3% and like for like sales at newer stores were up 7% over the same period.

The Crawshaw's board anticipate that full year trading profit and cash generation will be in line with management expectations.

As a result of tough market conditions that had affected sales and profit margins, the Bradmarsh Business Park company announced in June that they would look to broaden the product offer in order to increase sales to existing loyal customers, and to make the retail space work harder. Side dishes, desserts, sauces and more take-out options were all being considered.

News: Crinoline House is coming down

By

Work has started on the demolition of Crinoline House in Rotherham town centre.

The former council offices were vacated in 2010 and contractors have now begun the internal stripping-out in preparation for demolition some of which will begin in the next four to six weeks. The physical demolition will require some occasional road closures outside peak traffic times to ensure the public safety in the immediate area.

The whole project is expected to take around 16 weeks to complete. Rotherham MBC has consulted with South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to ensure that disruption to bus service departures and for customers using the Transport Interchange is kept to a minimum.

The seven-storey building on Effingham Street was built in the early 1970s and housed Rotherham Borough Council's Social Services department.

The demolition was brought forward as the building had been a target for antisocial behaviour.

Anglo-Dutch developer, TCN is purchasing the council's 22,000 sq m Civic Site for £7m with Rotherham Council staff relocating to new offices, Riverside House on Main Street, in 2012.

Plans have recently been submitted for a Tesco Extra store on the site of the Civic Building, Central Library and Norfolk House, plus a petrol filling station on the site of Crinoline House.

Across town, the council is disposing of their offices at Doncaster Gate. The council's cabinet has approved that the option be pursued for the marketing and disposal of the asset in order to obtain the highest potential capital receipt.

The council purchased the former medical facilities in 2009 for around £1.5m with the aim of using the building as offices whilst other properties were refurbished and the new offices were completed.

News: Rotherham hospital redevelopment is "very good"

By

The main entrance at Rotherham Hospital has received acclaim thanks to its outstanding environmental credentials.

Constructed by BAM Construction and designed by Race Cottam Associates, the new entrance opened last year.

The Department of Health require that all healthcare refurbishment projects achieve a rating of "Very Good" under BREEAM Healthcare guidelines and Rotherham Hospital's main entrance has achieved this standard.

John Cartwright, director of Estates and Facilities at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, said: "Factors which helped the building to achieve the "Very Good" certification include a 75% reduction in construction waste sent to landfill, a reduction in construction impacts including CO2 production, water consumption and dust pollution, training for the contractor's workforce in how to protect the site's ecology and the use of natural light where possible.

"The new main entrance at the hospital is very impressive, highly energy efficient and is well thought of by patients, staff and visitors."

Internally the building was reshaped to create better circulation for patients, visitors and staff and to incorporate features such as community corner, where community groups and service providers can promote their projects.

The major redevelopment project, which formed part of the first phase of The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust's "Healthcare of Tomorrow" programme is one of a number designed by Sheffield's Race Cottom, having previously completed a new Theatre Admissions Unit and Theatre refurbishment work along with a series of other improvements at the hospital on Moorgate.
