By

Rotherham healthcare decontamination specialist DawMed have announced their latest financial results. Turnover increased by 67% to £3.82m compared to £2.29m in 2006 and the company said sales of its own products significantly increased over the six months up to March 31st. Kevin Gilmore, Executive Chairman of Dawmed, commented: "I am pleased to report a buoyant period of recovery from last year's losses, with a first half underlying performance turnaround of £501,000, excluding the effects of the exceptional foreign exchange loss and the non-recurring abnormal costs expected to be recoverable in the second half, and I look forward to the current profitable trading leading to profitability for the second half of the year."

News: New business club highlights growth of Dearne Valley

By

More than 200 businesses from across the Dearne Valley attended a new networking group, which hosted its inaugural meeting earlier this month. The newly formed Dearne Valley Business Club has been developed by one of South Yorkshire’s leading law firms, Atteys and The Royal Bank of Scotland, both patrons of the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber. The new business club offers an opportunity for businesses to meet new contacts and help to encourage greater collaboration between local companies. It also aims to offer a less formal approach to networking and hopes to become a regular feature of the local business calendar. Charlotte Bradbury, partner at Atteys, told The South Yorkshire times: "I have worked in the Dearne Valley for a number of years and it has firmly established itself as one of the region's foremost places to do business. The change in the local economy has been dramatic to say the least and despite talk of a global economic downturn, many remain optimistic about the future."

News: Harthill pupils put their business acumen to the test

By

The Dinnington & Maltby Guardian report on the latest Rotherham school to host an enterprise event. Working with Rotherham Ready and young entrepreneurs from Rotherham Youth Enterprise, Harthill Primary School set each of the six classes the challenge of starting a business from scratch. The week long initiative saw the budding entrepreneurs involved with everything from designing logos and tickets to accountancy and costing. Visits from young entrepreneurs earlier in the week inspired the pupils and the week's lessons focused on the business objectives of teamwork, organisation, creativity, initiative, financial literacy and problem-solving. Amy Crane, Year 2 teacher and enterprise champion. told the paper: "Enterprise isn't something that's part of our curriculum, so this was about making the children aware of business. "My class did wonderfully well as the Cool Clothes Company," added Mrs Crane. "Rather than selling goods, they sold a service."

News: Magna 34 warehouse nears completion

By

The Star reports that work on the 151,123 sq ft warehouse at the Magna 34 Business Park in Rotherham is nearing completion. The large scale warehouse, with 14 dock-level loading doors, is being developed by a consortium comprising Jaguar Estates, JF Finnegan and Loxley Land. Toby Vernon of letting agents M3 told The Star: "Although Doncaster and the M18 has seen substantial speculative development of large scale industrial units over recent years, there has been very little along the M1 corridor around Sheffield and Rotherham. "We have seen latent demand in this location from large scale, well established local occupiers who need to relocate or expand and wish to remain within the area. "We expect this interest to continue as the remaining elements of the Magna34 scheme reach completion throughout 2008 and 2009." The 19 acre Business Park at Templeborough also includes office and industrial space.

News: End of an era for Derek’s years of restoration

By

Thirteen years and £20m of restoration work on a former coke works in Rotherham is set to come to an end next month, with some real environmental enhancements gained. The Waverley site, which had been used for more than 200 years for coal mining and industrial activity, has undergone a total transformation since 1995 from a bleak mining site with dirty rivers and contaminated land, to an area with a real future. More than four million tonnes of waste from the former coke works and 30 million tonnes of spoil contained in the Orgreave colliery pit tip has been remediated as part of the Orgreave Reclamation Scheme as well as the re-routing, decontamination and aeration of the River Rother. Site manager, Derek Harrison, (55) from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, has seen Waverley's regeneration first hand, after working alongside more than 120 colleagues on the 741-acre site for more than eight years for owners, property and energy company, UK COAL. Derek has worked on the contouring of development platforms, a major surface water drainage scheme, landscape planting, ecological enhancements and the implementation of public footpaths. He said: "It has been extremely rewarding to see Waverley develop from an industrial wasteland into a vast restored area. "It's gone from a dark, dirty and smelly area, to a mass of remediated landscape which we hope to secure a sustainable community on, complete with lakes and reservoirs, improved public access and the creation of dedicated woodland and wildflower grasslands. "The river was once the dirtiest in Europe, but now has good water quality. To add to this, the land has been designed to attract nature."

Chief Executive of Rotherham company, AES Engineering and the current Master Cutler, Gordon Bridge, was delighted to be shown the outstanding progress made on the nearly completed £14m first phase of the Rotherham town centre flood defences. Gordon said: “It’s of great importance to me that local businesses are protected against future flood events like those seen last year and from what I’ve seen today, this is just what the first phase will achieve for a 1km stretch of the River Don.” Amongst the 100 properties to be protected when the full scheme is complete are major companies such as Firth Rixson, an international specialist metal components manufacturer, Rank Hovis, and Tesco, all significant employers in the town. News: Rotherham entrepreneur finds her Voice

By

When Jacqui Eginton decided to set up her Rotherham-based telemarketing business, she promised herself she would only do it if the name ‘Voice’ was available to register. It was – and Voice Telemarketing was born, and has never looked back. Jacqui is one of a growing new breed of female entrepreneur. She set up as a solo operator initially in a small unit at Rotherham Borough Council’s Moorgate Crofts Business Centre in 2006, but has now taken on a bigger office there, with five staff working the phones. Her company provides bespoke services to business telemarketing campaigns for companies in the South Yorkshire area. Now, thanks to help and support from business advisers at Rotherham Investment and Development Office (RiDO) – the council’s regeneration arm – and the Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, Jacqui’s looking to cast her net wider. “My dream is to set up a franchise – but that is some way off yet,” she said. Being in the modern business centre has also had a positive impact on Voice: “I can’t tell people how brilliant it has been for my business being based at Moorgate Crofts. It’s town centre-located, there are no fixed contracts and I’ve got open access to free business advice. “One excellent thing that has helped is the RiDO Executive Club – a series of networking events for RiDO business centre occupants that has lead to a number of new contracts for Voice. Jacqui set up Voice Academy, providing beginner, intermediate and advanced courses in telemarketing for companies who want to take the function in-house. She’s even passed on her skills to Rotherham teenagers at enterprise days in schools.

News: 3D stands out longer for South Yorkshire Firms

By

A pioneering business aid project to help South Yorkshire firms take advantage of new interactive 3D imaging technology is to be extended following significant take up by firms in the region. The LETS (Leading Edge Technology Solutions) project, funded by the Objective 1 regeneration fund and based in Doncaster, has helped scores of small and medium sized companies to access innovative 3D applications for marketing, product development and built environment design since it was launched in 2006. Originally scheduled to end in June, the LETS project has been extended until the end of September as a result of business interest fostered by recent Hollywood 3D blockbusters such as Beowulf and increasing use of 3D visuals on commercial websites. LETS business development manager Helen Richardson said: “The LETS project allows small and medium-sized firms to explore and understand commercial use of 3D visualisation without any hard sell. Companies soon discover just how effective 3D can be in cutting production costs through ‘virtual’ prototypes and boosting sales through eye-catching 3D sales support applications. “Over the past two years, commercial interest in business applications of 3D technology has grown rapidly as new internet and computer applications are developed. “For example, we first previewed commercial use of ‘no-glasses’ 3D TV screens to South Yorkshire companies over 12 months ago. Costs are going down all the time and they may well become a fixture in the average living room within three or four years.”

News: More Rotherham buildings up for design awards

By

Two Rotherham developments, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and the Eco Homes at Henley Rise, have been shortlisted for this year’s RIBA Yorkshire White Rose Awards. The Bond Bryan designed "Factory of the Future" at the Advanced Manufacturing Park houses the AMRC, a partnership between Boeing and the University of Sheffield. Over 100 researchers will be stationed at the facility, and will be responsible for transferring knowledge of pioneering industrial techniques in aerospace, automotive and medical sectors to manufacturing companies throughout the whole region. The building is 4,200 sq m and distinctive in its architecture. It has been designed as national exemplar of sustainable building development and includes eco heat pumps and two wind turbines. The design is shortlisted for the overall White Rose Award for Architecture and the Sustainable Futures Award, where it is joined by the Henley Rise project. The South Yorkshire Housing Association project provides 23 timber-framed affordable homes at Masbrough. The properties are superinsulated to minimise heat loss and for most of the year, heat from lights and appliances will provide enough warmth without the need to use central heating. All the properties benefit from a complete solar roof generating 3000KW of electricity per property and providing at least two thirds of the hot water needed by the household. This is currently the largest installation of its kind in the UK.

News: AESSEAL boosts skills thanks to Chamber

By

Award winning Rotherham manufacturer AESSEAL teamed up with Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber to bolster its staff’s management abilities, when 17 employees completed the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Introductory Certificate in Management. The course was made up of various units, each of which applies to a different facet of a manager’s workload such as time management and motivational skills. The programme also involved an extremely thorough assessment process. Tim O’Connell has taken up the post of business development manager at Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RiDO), the regeneration arm of the council, following from Paul Woodcock, the new director of Planning & Regeneration. Tim's focus is to take the expertise and success of the borough’s strong track record in business incubation a stage further and increase the number of high calibre companies in the region. News: Bridging the North/South technology divide

By

An excellent article on The Business Desk reports on the growing technology sector in Yorkshire. Hubs in Leeds, Harrogate, Wetherby, and York have been joined by Sheffield and Rotherham as they have become popular destinations in which to set up technology businesses. The article discusses the rise in the number of start up technology businesses with funders such as the South Yorkshire Investment Fund (SYIF), recognising that South Yorkshire's towns and cities are proving attractive to both resident IT entrepreneurs and outside talent. SYIF's Jonathan Dixon told the site: "We're also attracting companies from outside the region as seedcorn funding is rare in the UK. But that South Yorkshire has such a good reputation for skills and infrastructure is equally as important in their decision to relocate." Andrew Burton, managing director of the Viking Fund added: "Most of the companies we've invested in have been started here in Yorkshire. "It's true that an increasing number are based in South Yorkshire, but I think that's because technology firms need to be based in a metropolitan environment to attract staff."

News: Rotherham Council wins Regeneration award

By

Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council was named Local Authority of the Year at the Yorkshire Business Insider's Property Industry Awards last week, beating tough competition from three other shortlisted councils in the region, Creative Sheffield, Leeds City Council and Hull Forward. Judges praised the council’s “well-balanced” attitude towards development and regeneration, and its holistic vision for the borough’s transformation. Tim O’Connell, business development manager at Rotherham Investment & Development Office, the council’s regeneration arm, said: “Rotherham is increasingly proving itself to be pioneering in its approach to regeneration – and the energy and passion that drives the transformation comes from the good people who are working towards that common goal. “Rotherham is going through an enormous period of change, with the Renaissance programme set to transform the town centre just as the transformation of the old industrial areas has been successful in attracting new businesses. “There’s still a long way to go. That’s what makes winning this accolade all the more impressive – and shows how highly-regarded our efforts and approach to change are.”
