News: Rotherham's teenage talent

By

Anastasia Weiner of The Business Desk writes an interesting piece on youth enterprise. Highlighting that levels of entrepreneurship among 18-24-year-olds in Yorkshire and Humberside are higher than the national average (5.1% compared with 3.7%) and discussing Yorkshire Forward's £2.5m "Enterprising Yorkshire" scheme, she uses an interesting case study of Rotherham young entrepreneur, Hayley Edge. Starting her own business at the age of 16, Hayley discusses her enthusiasm for business, being able to get stuck in, develop ideas, take risks and be in control. Hayley discusses her involvement in the Young Chamber and enterprise education in the borough: "I’ve been learning in Rotherham for a full year now, and my opinion of Yorkshire has changed completely. I could happily live here for the rest of my life. The education system has a fuller and more varied after school curriculum." Hayley runs the homemade bath products business, Soaps, Suds & Salts and was one of the first recipients of the Rotherham Chamber of Commerce Young Athenian Awards. She has also written for Yorkshire Forward’s pamphlet "The Ambitions & Aspirations of Young People in Yorkshire & Humber."

News: Plans for Waverley development submitted

By

Multi million pound proposals for South Yorkshire's largest ever brownfield development creating a new 4,000 home community across 741 acres at Waverley have been submitted to Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council. The plans by UK Coal would transform a former coke works and mining site near Catcliffe in Rotherham, which covers an area bigger than Sheffield city centre, into a high quality residential and employment site. UK Coal's property division, Harworth Estates, and planners Atisreal have worked with the local communities to bring the masterplan to the public via consultation sessions and have now submitted an outline planning application. Tim Love, Harworth Estates' development director said: "This submission, which is the culmination of 15 years of preparatory work, aims to provide major economic benefits to South Yorkshire and if successful, will create a unique, sustainable development on a historic, fully restored former mine site. "The proposal would transform this area with a mainly industrial past to a modern 21st century development that will benefit thousands of local people in terms of providing new affordable housing, employment opportunities, schools and leisure facilities." The 20 year scheme is aimed at creating an 9,000-strong community including two schools, shops, bars, restaurants and a stunning waterside frontage onto three man-made lakes. Public open space is also a key feature. A separate planning application by Helical Governetz for a large office development for government workers alongside the Highfield Commercial and Advanced Manufacturing Park is also proposed. UK Coal recently gained planning approval for a brownfield development at the former Prince of Wales Colliery in Pontefract.

News: Julie is a safe pair of hands guiding flagship business centre

By

The woman who will captain a new £5m flagship business centre, one of the most innovative in the UK, is no stranger to helping start-up companies flourish. Julie Hall, business centre co-ordinator for the unmistakable eco-friendly Fusion@Magna, in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, spent 17 years working with small businesses in Barnsley on every level including helping them capitalise on marketing, training and networking. Julie said: "I’m excited about this new challenge to help the area’s entrepreneurs reach their potential. "I hope to build on the success and reputation of the RiDO centres at Century and Moorgate Crofts, so that we can continue to provide start-up companies with the right environment to launch and grow their businesses." Julie previously worked at Barnsley’s Mount Osborne Business Centre before being promoted to business facilities coordinator – responsible for the day-to-day operation of Mount Osborne and two other centres. "Fusion @ Magna is unlike any building I’ve ever worked in," she added. The walls are trellised with galvanised steel, forming a structure for foliage to grow along. That, along with the green roof, covered with sedum and herbaceous plants, and additional landscaping reduce energy loss and the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. There is also a system to collect and re-use rainwater. The green technology provides protection from ultra-violet radiation and insulation against temperature extremes, improving durability and cutting running costs. The centre is already 50 per cent let and its 29 offices and 18 workshops are suitable for everything from creative and financial services companies to small-scale manufacturing operations.

News: German delegation mark 10th anniversary of partnership with Rotherham

By

A six-strong delegation from Riesa, in eastern Germany, has made a VIP visit to Rotherham to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the economic and development partnership between the town and the borough. During the visit, the delegation met with Tim O’Connell, head of the business development team at Rotherham Investment & Development Office (RiDO), the council’s regeneration arm. He was able to share Rotherham’s vision for the future, highlighting its success in attracting new companies and developers to the region, in which he has a strong track record. They also had a preview of the plans for the major £5m Clifton Park project and visited Wath Comprehensive School, which has established a strong link by running a programme of exchanges for language students over the past two years. Christine Majer, economic strategy officer for Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council’s Environment & Development Services, said: "This was a celebration visit to mark the strong links Rotherham and Riesa have built up over the past decade. It’s a clear sign that Rotherham’s reputation continues to grow on the European, and even world, stage. "Like Riesa, Rotherham has been traditionally associated with mining and steel but gradually we are shifting perceptions and demonstrating that our tremendous regeneration programmes are helping drive a thriving local economy."

News: Historic milestone in £390m YES! Project

By

The people behind Europe’s largest covered leisure, entertainment and sports complex cleared the final hurdle late yesterday. AIM-listed developer Oak Holdings plc and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council signed the crucial legal document, the Development Agreement, which allows the YES! Project to go ahead. Work is expected to start around the end of this year, and be complete by 2012. As well as environmental improvements to the 327-acre former coalfield site, YES! will be a 1.2m sq ft covered fully-integrated mixed-use resort, including conference facilities. The centre will be technology driven, with features such as virtual reality. YES! will also have an Olympic-scale white-water kayaking course, and its location, Rotherham’s Rother Valley Country Park, has been accepted on the list of potential training bases for the 2012 Olympics. Oak’s chief executive, Steve Lewis, said at the ceremony at Rotherham Town Hall: "Today’s signing formalises the Cabinet’s approval and we can now move confidently towards gaining tenant commitment. Rotherham is just the supreme location – more than a million people within thirty minutes’ drive-time, and half the UK population within two-and-a-half hours’." Council leader Cllr Roger Stone said: "This is a significant milestone in bringing the YES! Project from vision to reality. The development will boost not just the local but the regional economy. And together with other visitor destinations across South Yorkshire it will really put the area on the leisure, sport and entertainment map." The Agreement, which contains the terms for a 250-year lease of the development site, follows approval of the Development Agreement by the Council’s Cabinet of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council on July 30 this year.

News: Rotherham Renaissance – see it, believe it!

By

Rotherham people are now being invited to take a look at a new scale model to see what goes where in the £2bn regeneration of the town centre when it goes on display for the first time at the Rotherham Show in September. This will be the kick-start event of many in a series of Renaissance Roadshows taking place over the coming months with the sole aim of getting the message out there on what’s happening in the town. Strategic director of Environment & Development Services Karl Battersby said: "Why is it important for you to know what’s being built in your town? Well, because it’s not all about the physical developments. Regenerating a town also means changing attitudes and building on people’s pride in where they live." Progress is being made on the Imperial Buildings, Old Market and Keppel Wharf developments with plans recently submitted for the All Saints' Building. The former Marks & Spencer’s store is currently being fitted out for a new homeware store and a scheme for a 400-space multistorey car park and hotel, to replace the existing Drummond Street car park, is to be submitted soon with building expected to start early next year. The Renaissance Town Team’s vice-chairman, Mike Smith, said: "It has come to the point where we are able to show the people of Rotherham what their town is going to look like when the current and future developments are completed."

News: Hydrogen mini-grid project begins in Rotherham

By

New Energy Focus reports on details of the revolutionary "hydrogen mini-grid" system at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham. The new Environmental Energy Technology Centre (EETC) should see all its power provided by a 225kW turbine and even when the wind does not blow, the turbine should be able to provide the building's power needs through a hydrogen fuel cell system. The pioneering development is set to be largest wind-to-hydrogen power system in the UK and, if successful, could pave the way for the use of hydrogen as an alternative power source to fossil fuels. Work on the foundations for the turbine started on August 4, with Wigan firm Allenbuild preparing the site for delivery of the turbine from Danish manufacturers Vestas next month. Newcastle-based consultancy TNEI is leading the hydrogen mini-grid project on behalf of Yorkshire Forward and the building should be producing its own power from January. Dr Stoyel of TNEI told New Energy Focus: "The foundations for the turbine have been laid, so that will be going up in the next few weeks, with the 225kW turbine supplying all the electricity over and above the building's needs. The excess will be turned into hydrogen and stored for use at a later date." The AMP already has two wind turbines operational, powering the AMRC and the new centre will house LIFE-IC, a "business accelerator" focused on new energy products and services.

News: Rotherham firm invest in Combilift

By

Warehouse & Logistics News report on the investment made by Rotherham based Quality Heat Treatment (QHT) which has lead to safer handling procedures and opened up new business opportunities. The metals firm at Eastwood was established in 1964 and specialises in conventional furnace heat treatment of castings, forgings and fabrications by gas fired batch furnaces. The nature of QHT’s business means that they are handling very heavy, at times extremely hot and potentially hazardous loads around the site. Keen to expand the business, lead engineering director Paul Mattock invested in a Combilift 4-way forklift, improving site safety and enabling the company to take on much longer loads. Paul told the magazine: "We had a counterbalance forklift, but its manoeuvrability was very limited, and handling longer loads with it was going to be tricky if not plain dangerous. "We had always shied away from treating 6.5m long bars, but the 4-way ability of the Combilift now enables us to provide this service for our customers as we can easily get these through the 3m wide doorway to the furnace."

News: Advanced manufacturing put to the test

By

The Star reports that testing has begun on the landing gear of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner. Specialist researchers at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham worked for over 18 months with engineers at Messier-Dowty to develop the optimum machining processes to be adopted in the manufacture of new generation landing gear. Messier-Dowty, along with Boeing are one of the principal sponsors of the University of Sheffield AMRC. Messier-Dowty, an integral member of the Boeing 787 supply team, carried out extensive titanium machining trials in order to reduce the weight of the landing gear. Messier-Dowty will incorporate an increased use of titanium on the main gear, including a titanium inner cylinder, which is an industry first. Boeing has installed the landing gear in the first Dreamliner and started "swing testing," which simulates how the gear will work when the aeroplane lands and takes off. Jay McArthur, general supervisor for the 787's production test told The Star "The test replicates an actual extension and retraction of the landing gear as it would function on a regular flight. "The testing involves swinging the landing gear into a stowed position and back down into a landing position."
