News: Print firm's investment in Rotherham is UK first
Rotherham print specialist, Hine Labels has boosted its digital print setup by investing in the UK's first Xeikon 3000 label press. The firm moved into digital print in 2007 when they installed a Xeikon 330 allowing them to work through the whole of the digital production cycle, something quite different to their traditional flexographic business. The move has allowed Hine to offer greater flexibility and shorter runs for their trade customers. Bill Hine, managing director of Hine Labels, said: "It has certainly enabled us to open new doors with existing customers. The ability to economically produce shorter runs has a strong appeal in many market sectors, and we have also become involved in a number of test marketing programs – an ideal task for digital production, as we can create any number of label variants within a short space of time." From their purpose-built factory at Masbrough, Hine are big enough to produce label runs in the millions and small enough to be able to deal with every order from start to finish.

News: Dearne Valley College talks business
A Business Breakfast took place this month at Dearne Valley College (DVC) which offered information on training opportunities and support through the tough economic climate. Guest speakers included; Gavin Hine Partnership Manager from Business Link, Barry Stones and Edward Dodd from Business Crime Reduction Centre along with Ian Wilans from The Financial Services Authority who talked about how to manage money in difficult times. Neil Baxter from Bramall Construction and chair of the Work and Skills Board was invited to present the Training Quality Standard (TQS) plaque to College Principal, Sue Ransom. Dearne Valley College (DVC) achieved the accreditation which recognises the best organisations in the country for delivering training and development solutions to employers. The accreditation is the first college accreditation in South Yorkshire. Neil Baxter commented: "The quality of training delivered by the college is responsive and adaptable to our needs. The relationship we have built with the college and indeed the Business Training team is vital in keeping our employees and business ahead of the competition. I was delighted to present the TQS plaque as it is testament to the work that the college does." Kaye Williams, DVC Business Development Manager commented: "The Business Breakfast was an ideal opportunity for local employers to see what training is available to them and their employees. During difficult economic times there are still funding streams available for training which we would encourage businesses to take advantage of."

Rotherham company, Inditherm, has won a prestigious Medilink UK Award for 2009. The awards, sponsored by Xiros Plc, celebrate cutting edge technologies, outstanding business achievements and international success and collaboration and have been designed to showcase the cream of the healthcare industry. Inditherm picked up the UKT&I sponsored Export Achievement Award after their export sales increased by a staggering 338%. Inditherm's energy efficient polymer technology is used in heating mattresses, pipework, sports pitches, storage vessels and medical treatments and the company now works with over 30 medical distributors and overseas partners. The company's CosyTherm neonatal range is now firmly established as market leader in the UK and is starting to attract increasing interest in the USA. Speaking about his award Inditherm's Chief Executive, Nick Bettles, said: "We were delighted to have been selected as the winner of the prestigious Medilink UK Export Achievement Award. Inditherm’s innovative technology is helping to deliver better patient care, in addition to significantly reducing the costs of preventing intra-operative hypothermia. Inditherm websiteNews: Access all areas in Rotherham
Disabled people will be given the opportunity to take part in a number of work placements thanks to the "Access All Areas" scheme in Rotherham. Through the scheme, ten local employers will be providing 30 day work placement opportunities to disabled people. The scheme has been set up because as it is recognised that if someone has not worked for some time it can be harder to find paid work. If a person also has a disability there can be additional barriers an individual has to cross to gain work. By providing work placements it is hoped that it will help an individual to build their self-esteem, confidence and stamina. It will also provide real work experience that an individual can describe when applying for work to show that they meet the requirements for the post. The project will be launched on Friday March 27 at Silverwood Miners Welfare Centre, when disabled people will be able to come along to meet with employers and find out about the placements on offer. Rotherham Council, 2010 Rotherham, NHS Rotherham, South Yorkshire Police and Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber are all set to offer placements.

News: Eco-vision for Dearne Valley as the green heart of the City Region

A council report has outlined the vision for the Dearne Valley to have a new future and a whole new identity as the first "Eco Park" in the UK. Developed by the Dearne Valley Special Board, the vision would see the Dearne Valley reimagined as an eco-valley and the report states that: "as a pioneer in the Sheffield City Region, the Dearne would grasp the opportunities and apply the solutions needed to reduce the community's CO2 emissions such that, within a decade, it will be the lowest carbon community of its type in the UK." The Dearne Valley was one of the most polluted areas in Western Europe and following the demise of the traditional coal mining industry there has been significant regeneration investment. The board believe that the Dearne still lacks a new and coherent sense of identity and purpose and commissioned consultants, Urbed, to develop the vision. Features include new transport links, developing environmental technologies, efficient and sustainable land use and strong communities, with purpose, identity and cohesion. As a first step, it was suggested that the Dearne should achieve the lowest carbon footprint of any comparable place – within ten years. The vision states that: "for the communities of the Dearne, the vision will mean the delivery of more energy efficient homes, cutting fuel bills for residents. Better public transport links will improve access and reduce reliance on the car. More training opportunities will be available in skills to address climate change, improving peoples job prospects and equipping them for the new jobs created in the Dearne as more businesses, specialising in environmental technologies, are attracted to the area. An enhanced natural environment will create a place where people want to live and work and bring up their families, as well as attracting visitors from across the City Region."

News: Students set sights on grand designs
Students from Sheffield Hallam University have been applying their newly developed skills and expertise in a bid to help leading South Yorkshire law firm Atteys maximise their use of office space and improve the working environment for their staff. It is the first project of its kind to be undertaken in the region and was pioneered by Dr Barry Haynes and Nick Nunnington from the Faculty of Development and Society of Sheffield Hallam University and Atteys Managing Partner Gill Knight. The project was based on similar work Nick has undertaken as a consultant in Scandinavia and Barry with a number of local and national government organisations and an Australian bank. The winning team came up with a number of ideas aimed at helping to maximise the firm's use of space as well as enhancing the way in which the firm operates. Ideas including the introduction of new IT systems, creating and enhancing staff social areas, as well as creating a more open plan layout within each of the offices. Over the past few weeks, nine teams of students, currently working towards degrees in Business Property Management, have been visiting the firm's offices across South Yorkshire, surveying working space, preparing and analysing satisfaction questionnaires and space utilisation records and interviewing members of staff in order to prepare reports and recommendations on how the business could achieve its goals by better use of its premises. Managing Partner Gill Knight said: "This project has been a really worthwhile partnership with benefits all round. It has been a real privilege to work with Sheffield Hallam University, and it's clear from the quality of work produced that the students have been working hard on their proposals. Each group produced some really innovative ideas and there is no doubt that they provoked a debate within the firm about how we use our premises to create a better working environment. "Nine groups of students presented a number of different ideas to us. What particularly impressed me was that each group came up with quite different solutions. I will certainly be looking at the viability of implementing a number of their recommendations in the near future."

News: Rotherham MP calls on more support for steelworkers
Rotherham MP Denis MacShane has called on Lord Mandelson and ministers in the Business Department to examine measures in place in Europe which allow steelworkers to be kept in work for training purposes rather than be made redundant. Speaking in a Commons debate, MacShane challenged Business Minister Pat McFadden to be more innovative in seeking ideas from Europe to help the beleaguered steel communities. "Good things are happening in Europe, so will my right hon. Friend consider applying them to our steel industry? If not, we will face much graver problems, which could be avoided with a little more flexibility and innovation from the Department." MacShane added: "This recession will end and Britain still has to make things. Steel is at the heart of all manufacturing and I urge Ministers to be bold and be prepared to take ideas from elsewhere to keep jobs going."

News: 2010 Rotherham secures contract
2010 Rotherham Ltd has secured a contract to install aids and make adaptations to elderly and disabled people's homes in Rotherham. 2010 – which manages, repairs and improves Rotherham's Council homes - has become one of the key providers of Rotherham Borough Council's aids and adaptations work after winning a four-year contract with the Council. Work ranges from fitting grab rails, to installing walk-in showers, to constructing property extensions to improve customers’ living environments - both in Council and privately-owned properties. 2010 Rotherham Ltd construction manager Keith Bradley said: "We were delighted to win the new contract which is a credit to the specialised teams we have at ground level – our plumbers, joiners and bricklayers. "The emphasis of our approach is firmly on the customer and we aim to deliver a first class service. With much of the work we carry out there is inevitably going to be some upheaval, but we are sensitive to our customers' needs and try to minimise disruption as much as possible." 2010 Rotherham Ltd is investing significantly in training for its staff, for example, in understanding customers’ unique expectations and aspirations. It now intends to benchmark itself against other aids and adaptations service providers across the country and seek out good practice as part of its policy of continuous improvement.
