News: MariNOx chosen for new Korean LNG carriers

By

The world-leading emissions monitoring system from Rotherham's Martek Marine has been specified for two new 147,000 m3 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers being built in the DSME shipyard in South Korea. The vessels will be operated by Shell STASCO on behalf of the Brunei Government and the contract follows on the back of 44 other deals for LNG carriers and 21 tankers being built in South Korea over the last three years. One such deal will see the first giant tanker carrying LNG from the Middle East to one of two new terminals in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire complete with Martek's MariNOx system on board. The Tembek, a 211,885 m3 Q-Flex LNG tanker, was built at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard at Geoje, South Korea and launched in November 2007 as part of the Qatargas 2 project. It is one of over 40 vessels in the Qatargas project to be fitted with the MariNOx on-board engine emissions monitoring system. MariNOx was the world's first Type Approved on-board NOx, SOx & CO2 emissions monitoring system and remains the overwhelming market leader with over 100 systems sold.

Some of the world's biggest suppliers to the aerospace industry met in Rotherham to discuss the latest developments in machining. The one-day seminar was one of the first to be staged at Dormer Tools' new site within the Advanced Manufacturing Park and it brought together leading organisations to talk about how they can respond to an ever-changing sector. Topics included future trends in the aerospace industry, machine tool developments, machining strategies for aerospace applications, developments in aerospace tooling and aerospace tooling solutions. The presentations showed how suppliers can achieve higher productivity, better quality and faster delivery. Peter Dickin, marketing manager at CADCAM specialist, Delcam, said: "The aerospace industry has always demanded the highest levels of quality and consistency from its suppliers. "Machining technology has progressed faster than ever over recent years. In the current economic environment, the added requirements for more cost-effective production and shorter lead times have become even more important. "To meet these demands, suppliers must ensure that their machining operations are as efficient as possible." David Goulbourne, development manager for drilling products at Dormer, added: "We were delighted to work with organisers Delcam to stage this event and bring together key people from across the country to discuss developments in aerospace tooling. "It gave us an opportunity to highlight the work we are doing to create and provide hole-making solutions for a variety of customers, from looking at the material of the tool through to its geometry design." Dormer hope the seminar will become the first of many at the AMP and Rob Smith, training and technical manager explained to delegates how Dormer is looking to create up to 10 new products a year for focus sectors like the aerospace industry.

Bill Hine, managing director of Hine Labels, said: "It has certainly enabled us to open new doors with existing customers. The ability to economically produce shorter runs has a strong appeal in many market sectors, and we have also become involved in a number of test marketing programs – an ideal task for digital production, as we can create any number of label variants within a short space of time." News: Rotherham regeneration continues thanks to Horbury

By

A prominent 1950's eye-sore building on the edge of Rotherham town centre has been demolished to make way for a housing regeneration project. The derelict five storey office block in Hollowgate has been razed to the ground by Horbury Estates, part of The Horbury Group, which is responsible for much of the regeneration of the Moorgate area. Only a brick-built façade remains of the Victorian Moorgate House, which adjoined the office block and has been preserved to form part of the site's future development, currently earmarked for residential accommodation. Trevor Wragg, managing director of the Horbury Group, said: "This is a really important project for one of Rotherham's most prestigious areas. "Moorgate has benefited from a significant amount of regeneration in recent years and the demolition of this disused and unattractive building will pave the way for the latest tranche of investment in the area and will provide both prestige and local needs housing. "The original Victorian façade of Moorgate House will remain to form a key part of the site's redevelopment and help to maintain its distinctive character. This development will bring the whole area back to life and positively impact Rotherham's growing regeneration portfolio." Moorgate is a designated Conservation Area and has undergone massive regeneration in the last few years, including The Horbury Group's recently built North Grove House and South Grove House modern office blocks. Award-winning architects Race Cottam Associates designed and submitted the plans for the scheme.

News: Rotherham energy project "Yorkshire's new claim to fame"

By

V1 Energy magazine talk to the experts behind the UK's first hydrogen powered building in Rotherham. The Advanced Manufacturing Park Technology Centre is to be the first building in Europe fuelled solely by wind and "green" hydrogen power. TNEI Services Ltd and the Pure Energy Centre were awarded the £2.3 million project from Yorkshire Forward to create the hydrogen mini-grid where electricity generated by an onsite 225kW wind turbine will be used to power the building and any excess stored using innovative hydrogen fuel cells. Generated using an electrolyser, the hydrogen will be compressed from 30 bar to 420 bar for storage at high pressure in state-of-the-art cylinders. This high pressure storage will allow the hydrogen to be used on site or easily sold or transported for use elsewhere. With over 200kg of high-pressure hydrogen stored in purpose built cylinders, it is also set to be the biggest single store of "green" hydrogen in the UK. Dr Jason Stoyel of TNEI also discusses the importance of the ground-breaking project as a knowledge transfer programme, designed to build expertise within the Yorkshire region, and as a catalyst for further investment from the Government. He also told the magazine: "The Hydrogen Mini-grid, based on a hydrogen fuel cell, will be the most technically advanced commercial fusion of renewable energy and state of the art hydrogen technology in Europe. "The energy generated by this installation will make the EETC one of the first truly carbon negative, fully operational commercial developments in the world and demonstrate the important role Hydrogen has to play in providing a secure, reliable and renewable energy supply for the UK."

News: Access all areas in Rotherham

By

Disabled people will be given the opportunity to take part in a number of work placements thanks to the "Access All Areas" scheme in Rotherham. Through the scheme, ten local employers will be providing 30 day work placement opportunities to disabled people. The scheme has been set up because as it is recognised that if someone has not worked for some time it can be harder to find paid work. If a person also has a disability there can be additional barriers an individual has to cross to gain work. By providing work placements it is hoped that it will help an individual to build their self-esteem, confidence and stamina. It will also provide real work experience that an individual can describe when applying for work to show that they meet the requirements for the post. The project will be launched on Friday March 27 at Silverwood Miners Welfare Centre, when disabled people will be able to come along to meet with employers and find out about the placements on offer. Rotherham Council, 2010 Rotherham, NHS Rotherham, South Yorkshire Police and Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber are all set to offer placements.

News: Eco-vision for Dearne Valley as the green heart of the City Region

By

A council report has outlined the vision for the Dearne Valley to have a new future and a whole new identity as the first "Eco Park" in the UK. Developed by the Dearne Valley Special Board, the vision would see the Dearne Valley reimagined as an eco-valley and the report states that: "as a pioneer in the Sheffield City Region, the Dearne would grasp the opportunities and apply the solutions needed to reduce the community's CO2 emissions such that, within a decade, it will be the lowest carbon community of its type in the UK." The Dearne Valley was one of the most polluted areas in Western Europe and following the demise of the traditional coal mining industry there has been significant regeneration investment. The board believe that the Dearne still lacks a new and coherent sense of identity and purpose and commissioned consultants, Urbed, to develop the vision. Features include new transport links, developing environmental technologies, efficient and sustainable land use and strong communities, with purpose, identity and cohesion. As a first step, it was suggested that the Dearne should achieve the lowest carbon footprint of any comparable place – within ten years. The vision states that: "for the communities of the Dearne, the vision will mean the delivery of more energy efficient homes, cutting fuel bills for residents. Better public transport links will improve access and reduce reliance on the car. More training opportunities will be available in skills to address climate change, improving peoples job prospects and equipping them for the new jobs created in the Dearne as more businesses, specialising in environmental technologies, are attracted to the area. An enhanced natural environment will create a place where people want to live and work and bring up their families, as well as attracting visitors from across the City Region."

News: Students set sights on grand designs

By

Students from Sheffield Hallam University have been applying their newly developed skills and expertise in a bid to help leading South Yorkshire law firm Atteys maximise their use of office space and improve the working environment for their staff. It is the first project of its kind to be undertaken in the region and was pioneered by Dr Barry Haynes and Nick Nunnington from the Faculty of Development and Society of Sheffield Hallam University and Atteys Managing Partner Gill Knight. The project was based on similar work Nick has undertaken as a consultant in Scandinavia and Barry with a number of local and national government organisations and an Australian bank. The winning team came up with a number of ideas aimed at helping to maximise the firm's use of space as well as enhancing the way in which the firm operates. Ideas including the introduction of new IT systems, creating and enhancing staff social areas, as well as creating a more open plan layout within each of the offices. Over the past few weeks, nine teams of students, currently working towards degrees in Business Property Management, have been visiting the firm's offices across South Yorkshire, surveying working space, preparing and analysing satisfaction questionnaires and space utilisation records and interviewing members of staff in order to prepare reports and recommendations on how the business could achieve its goals by better use of its premises. Managing Partner Gill Knight said: "This project has been a really worthwhile partnership with benefits all round. It has been a real privilege to work with Sheffield Hallam University, and it's clear from the quality of work produced that the students have been working hard on their proposals. Each group produced some really innovative ideas and there is no doubt that they provoked a debate within the firm about how we use our premises to create a better working environment. "Nine groups of students presented a number of different ideas to us. What particularly impressed me was that each group came up with quite different solutions. I will certainly be looking at the viability of implementing a number of their recommendations in the near future."

News: Rotherham wetlands ready for launch

By

The Wildlife Trust for Sheffield and Rotherham has organised a celebratory project launch on the March 27 for Rotherham's new wetland nature park. Centenary Riverside is the centrepiece of Rotherham's first phase £14 million flood alleviation scheme, which is being created through a partnership led by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, the Environment Agency and the Wildlife Trust for Sheffield and Rotherham, with funding from South Yorkshire Objective 1, Yorkshire Forward and the Environment Agency RFDC. Just a stone's throw from Rotherham town centre at Templeborough, the five-hectare park incorporates large industrial relics with high quality wildlife habitats including wildflower meadows, woodland and ponds. The park will become the Wildlife Trust's tenth nature reserve and will provide recreation opportunities for local people, a haven for wildlife and essential water storage in times of flood. Chief Executive of the Wildlife Trust for Sheffield and Rotherham, Nigel Doar, said: "We are delighted to be involved in creation of this new urban nature park. Wetland is an increasingly rare habitat yet the role floodplain wetlands play in natural storage of water and flood alleviation is invaluable. This site will provide a haven for wildlife as well as giving local people somewhere new to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature so close to the centre of Rotherham." Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Development, Cllr Gerald Smith, said: "The massive construction works to provide flood defences in this first phase of the Renaissance Flood Alleviation Scheme has allowed a new community and wildlife resource to be created in a part of the riverside that we have been excluded from for perhaps 150 years due to the presence of heavy industry alongside the river. We are looking forward to the development of this new wetland area and the opportunities it brings for people to finally gain access to Rotherham's riverfront."

News: Rotherham MP calls on more support for steelworkers

By

Rotherham MP Denis MacShane has called on Lord Mandelson and ministers in the Business Department to examine measures in place in Europe which allow steelworkers to be kept in work for training purposes rather than be made redundant. Speaking in a Commons debate, MacShane challenged Business Minister Pat McFadden to be more innovative in seeking ideas from Europe to help the beleaguered steel communities. "Good things are happening in Europe, so will my right hon. Friend consider applying them to our steel industry? If not, we will face much graver problems, which could be avoided with a little more flexibility and innovation from the Department." MacShane added: "This recession will end and Britain still has to make things. Steel is at the heart of all manufacturing and I urge Ministers to be bold and be prepared to take ideas from elsewhere to keep jobs going."

News: 2010 Rotherham secures contract

By

2010 Rotherham Ltd has secured a contract to install aids and make adaptations to elderly and disabled people's homes in Rotherham. 2010 – which manages, repairs and improves Rotherham's Council homes - has become one of the key providers of Rotherham Borough Council's aids and adaptations work after winning a four-year contract with the Council. Work ranges from fitting grab rails, to installing walk-in showers, to constructing property extensions to improve customers’ living environments - both in Council and privately-owned properties. 2010 Rotherham Ltd construction manager Keith Bradley said: "We were delighted to win the new contract which is a credit to the specialised teams we have at ground level – our plumbers, joiners and bricklayers. "The emphasis of our approach is firmly on the customer and we aim to deliver a first class service. With much of the work we carry out there is inevitably going to be some upheaval, but we are sensitive to our customers' needs and try to minimise disruption as much as possible." 2010 Rotherham Ltd is investing significantly in training for its staff, for example, in understanding customers’ unique expectations and aspirations. It now intends to benchmark itself against other aids and adaptations service providers across the country and seek out good practice as part of its policy of continuous improvement.
