News: £1m arts funding secured for Rotherham

By

Flux Rotherham has been awarded £1m by the Arts Council to deliver more grassroots-led cultural experiences.

Having secured £2m in 2019, Flux has been part of the Creative People and Places programme and co-creates community art projects and events across the borough.

The latest funding will cover the next three years of the programme that aims to bring together community, grassroots and cultural organisations as partners to take the lead in choosing, creating and taking part in creative and cultural activities. They empower local people to pursue the art they want, where they live.

Helen Jones, Programme Director at Flux Rotherham, said: "At Flux Rotherham, we’re aiming to craft programmes and approaches where art is within everyone’s reach. Deeply rooted in Rotherham’s community spirit, we’re using the power of the arts to co-create a cultural movement that celebrates diversity, nurtures personal growth, and builds lasting connections between people.

"I want to say a huge thank you to our communities, partners, artists, Community Steering Panel, and consortium for their creativity and generosity. Their collaboration and commitment make everything we do possible, and we’re looking forward to continuing the journey and shaping something truly special for Rotherham over the next three years."

Flux has been involved with town centre events such as the Museum of the Moon and the Otherham light festival, the WE Wonder Festival at Wentworth Woodhouse and exhibitions at Clifton Park Museum, as well as being key attendees at the Rotherham Show.

The funding is made possible thanks to National Lottery players. Every National Lottery ticket purchased generates money for good causes and enables people in villages, towns, and cities up and down the country to get access to cultural experiences where they live.

Auriel Majumdar, Independent Chairperson at Flux Rotherham, said: "This is brilliant news for Rotherham. Over the last three years we’ve seen incredible creativity from people of all ages and backgrounds, and this new investment means we can continue to make culture part of everyday life across our communities.”

Rebecca Ball, Area Director, North, Arts Council England, added: “The Creative People and Places programme empowers our communities across the North to design and shape the cultural offer on their doorstep. Since 2012 we have seen the transformative impact of these projects on the people and places. I’m so happy that we are able to continue to fund this remarkable programme and I am delighted that from 2026 we will be welcoming four new projects in the North to the programme.

"I can’t wait to see how this investment will continue to inspire and engage. This programme would not be possible without the support of all the people who play the National Lottery, as it is thanks to them that we are able to fund this life changing work.”

News: Xeros sign breakthrough launch agreement with global washing machine brand

By

Xeros Technology Group plc, the Rotherham-based creator of technologies that reduce the impact of clothing on the planet, has signed an agreement with one of the world's largest branded washing machine manufacturers.

Based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham, Xeros is a Leeds University spin-out that has created a number of technologies, such as the use of polymer beeds in washing and filters to collect microplastics.

The latest deal will result in the mass production of domestic washing machines using Xeros' Laundry Care technology (XDrum and XOrbs) under the manufacturer's brand.

Xeros' "XOrbs" last for many hundreds of washes before needing to be replaced and recycled. The beads gently remove unwanted molecules and contaminants from materials allowing washing machines to work more efficiently while using just a fraction of the water traditionally needed.

The manufacturer, which cannot be named due to commercial sensitivity, is a global leader, and top ten brand, selling around seven million domestic washing machines per year, operating predominantly across North and Latin America.

The agreement will follow a paid-for, time-bound process with defined milestones and deliverables, and is anticipated to complete in around 12-18 months. Post completion, revenue will come from a royalty payment for each Product Certification Mark used, and from the sale of XOrbs.

Xeros anticipates that similar paid for agreements will follow, with three further global washing machine manufacturers currently in technical verification.

Neil Austin CEO at Xeros, said: "The Agreement to develop a Laundry Care machine with a top ten global brand is a game changer for the Group and on a personal level the key moment I have been working towards since joining the business. We are absolutely thrilled to be working with them and believe this is the strongest evidence yet for the global adoption of Xeros' Care Technology."

The group recently reported a significant improvement in its financial performance, with the latest interim results showing a considerable narrowing of its losses.

The AIM-listed group posted a net loss for the six months ended 30 June 2025, narrowing by nearly 11% compared to the previous reporting period. The loss for the last half-year stood at £1.73m, down from a loss of £1.94m in the same period last year. Adjusted EBITDA loss fell to £1.6m from £2.4m.

Xeros currently has another three global washing machine manufacturers in technical verification but the launch of IFB's 9kg Xeros-enabled washing machine has been delayed.

Highlights from the period include Yilmak securing its first denim manufacturing partnership for its Xeros denim processing machines with a prominent Pakistan-based manufacturer, Ambition Apparel, which produces over nine million pairs of jeans a year.

For XFiltra, which captures up to 99% of all microplastic particles shed from clothing during a domestic laundry cycle, Russell Hobbs plans to distribute Xeros' external filter into UK retailers whilst a Letter of Intent has been signed with Guangdong Welly Electrical Appliance Co. LTD ("Welly") a key supplier to the fast-moving Chinese appliance industry.

News: Milestone met but Magna tram stop completion moved to 2026

By

South Yorkshire’s newest Tram Train station has reached a major construction milestone, with the installation of lift shafts and a new passenger overbridge now complete at Magna in Rotherham.

Set to open in "early 2026", the £10m station and Park & Ride at Templeborough will serve the Tram Train route between Sheffield and Rotherham - improving access for residents, businesses and the Magna Science Adventure Centre, reducing congestion and pollution within the Lower Don Valley, and supporting wider regeneration in the area.

When South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) signed a funding agreement for the project, it forecasted a completion and entry into service of Autumn/Winter 2024.

Rothbiz reported in February that legal issues and delays associated with obtaining the necessary railway consents had pushed the completion date to November 2025.

AmcoGiffen is the principal contractor with the new infrastructure marking a significant step forward in the delivery of the station, which will feature fully accessible platforms, step-free access via lifts, and a pedestrian overbridge connecting both sides of the tracks.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, said: “It’s brilliant to see real progress being made at Magna. We’re building a better-connected South Yorkshire.

“This is about more than concrete and steel. It’s about making sure our public transport network works for everyone - accessible, joined-up, and designed around the needs of our communities.

“When the new station opens early next year, it’ll help more people get to work, get to school and spend time with friends and family. It’s another step towards a fairer, greener, more ambitious South Yorkshire. And I can’t wait to see it up and running."

The Magna Tram Train station is being delivered by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) in partnership with Network Rail and Supertram, with £8.1m in funding from the UK Government’s Transforming Cities Fund.

Roisin Lowery, Network Rail sponsor, said: “The completion of the lift shafts and passenger bridge marks a key milestone in the project to complete the new Magna Tram Train station. We’re proud to be working with our partners to deliver what will be a major step forward in improving connectivity in this part of South Yorkshire.”

The station will be the first new Tram Train stop added to the network since the pioneering service launched in 2018, and is expected to improve access to jobs, education and leisure for thousands of residents and visitors.

Cllr. Chris Read, leader of Rotherham Council, said: “The new Tram Train station at Magna is a further step forward for Rotherham and the wider region - improving the way our public transport network works, and strengthening our plans for more jobs and homes along the corridor along Templeborough and beyond.

“This project is about making sure Rotherham residents and people across the region benefit from better, greener transport and that our town continues to grow. We’re proud to be working with partners to deliver this investment. I look forward to seeing the station open and making a real difference for our communities and visitors.”

Barnsley-based AmcoGiffen is employing 20 local staff and prioritising regional procurement. Key structural components, including the station’s footbridge and lift shafts, were fabricated at AmcoGiffen’s Barnsley steel fabrication facility, making the most of the area's strong network of construction suppliers.

AmcoGiffen’s Operations Director, Peter Laws, said: “We’re proud to play a key role in delivering South Yorkshire’s flagship Tram Train station, showcasing the strength of our delivery capabilities. This project has been a true collaboration between all partners, and we’re delighted to be delivering it safely, efficiently, and to schedule, helping to create lasting benefits for the community.”

Tram Train services continue to run as normal during Magna Tram Train station construction, except on Saturday evenings when dedicated replacement bus TT1 replaces services between Meadowhall South, Rotherham Central and Parkgate. A full Tram Train service will resume from December 6.

News: Plans in to convert listed building in Rotherham town centre

By

An empty former townhouse in Rotherham town centre could be brought back to life, if a change of use application is approved.

12 Wellgate, close to Rotherham's heritage High Street, was granted grade II listed building status for its traditional Georgian façade with symmetrical proportions, sash windows, and stone detailing exemplifying the restrained elegance of the late-18th to early-19th century period.

In recent years the ground floor and first floor has been in commercial use - most recently as Bluebell Wood's retail operation, and before that, Eton menswear.

Having been up for sale at £185,000, an application has now been submitted that would enable the upper floors to be converted into flats.

The three-storey property with a loft provides 2,501 sq ft of space.

The application from Mr Ashraf and Goldnest Property Solutions shows that the ground floor would stay in commercial use and introduces four residential flats on the upper floors.

Two 1-bed studio flats would be on the first floor, with a 2-bed apartment on the second floor and a 1-bed apartment on the third floor.

No significant external alterations are proposed and access to the residential part of the building would be seperate to the access to the remaining commercial unit fronting Wellgate.

Plans state: "The immediate area includes shops, offices, food outlets, and residential conversions, demonstrating a well-established mix of uses.

"The scheme responds positively to the site and its setting, and demonstrates that it will be accessible and suitable for future occupants."

A heritage statement supporting the application explains that the building is in the Rotherham town centre conservation area so a planned internal subdivision to form habitable rooms would create minimal disruption to historic fabric with no external alterations to the façade. Indeed, as part of the conversion, the sash windows would be repaired using traditional timber and profiles.

The statement concludes: "The design balances heritage preservation with modern functionality, sustaining the building's contribution to the conservation area.

"The conversion of 12 Wellgate to residential use constitutes a sensitive and sustainable adaptation of a valued heritage asset. The proposal preserves the building's significance, enhances the conservation area's vitality, and ensures its continued contribution to Rotherham's historic townscape."

The Rotherham town centre masterplan of 2017 confirmed the need for more housing and leisure uses as a way to develop economic vitality, bringing more life, activity and spending back into the town centre and moving away from the traditional retail market.

News: Keepmoat preparing plans for another Rotherham housing development

By

Keepmoat Homes is proposing to develop another green field site in Rotherham.

Close to Aston and Swallownest, the site known as Aston Common was allocated for residential use in the council's local plan that was adopted in 2018, taking it out of the green belt.

The site is located within Swallownest which is designated as a Principal Settlement in the Rotherham Settlement Hierarchy contained within the local plan, which indicated that the site could be used for 175 houses.

Agents say that the intention is to pursue a full planning application for 189 dwellings on the 16.2 hectare site.

Pre-aaplication consultation is underway, presenting initial proposals for the site.

The consultation website states: "We value the comments and suggestions of local people and businesses, particularly where this helps to refine and improve the development proposal so that the social, environmental and economic benefits are maximised. There will be further opportunity to provide comments to Rotherham Council once the planning application has been submitted and validated."

Initial plans show that access to the site is limited to one new access along Mansfield Road.

Development has been designed to face outwards taking advantage of the views. The contours of the site have been designed to ensure an appropriate solution to the sloping site. This would include a mixture of re-grading the site and the use of retaining walls within the development.

A play area, landscaping and acoustic barriers to the adjacent employment use are shown in the plans.

Rothbiz reported earlier this month on Keepmoat's planning application for a parcel of farmland in Hellaby. The UK house builder is currently on site at the former Swinden Labs site on Moorgate, and recently submitted plans for the former bus depot at Masbrough.

News: AESSEAL is a top apprentice employer

By

Rotherham-based AESSEAL has been ranked as the top UK apprentice employer in the manufacturing sector in 2025.

AESSEAL is the largest part of the AES Engineering Ltd group, which operates in over 100 countries. The British-owned group manufactures its core products in Templeborough, and they are used by major industry globally to prevent the leakage of liquids and gases into the environment, thereby preventing environmental damage as well as avoiding a health and safety risk.

AESSEAL was one of a huge number of UK businesses, drawn from more than 20 different sectors considered for the Sunday Times ‘Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers’ awards. The awards celebrate the UK's outstanding apprenticeship employers – recognising their commitment to creating new apprenticeships, the diversity of their apprentices, and the number of apprentices who successfully complete their apprenticeships.

Ranked overall 84th in the top 100, which features giant public and private sector organisations such as the British Army, Grant Thornton and BAE Systems, the Rotherham-based company takes fewer apprentices annually than many of the others in the list with 73 apprentice starts in 2024. However, AESSEAL prides itself on its record of retaining and developing apprentices, some of whom have risen to senior management posts.

Overall, around 20% of AESSEAL’s workforce started as apprentices, and 32 new apprenticeships were started in the 2024-25 criteria period. With an overall placing of 84th out of 100, the company was the top-ranked manufacturer for 2025.

Chris Rea, managing director of AESSEAL and of holding group AES Engineering Ltd, said: “It is always a pleasant surprise to be singled out in these national awards. While AESSEAL is a global business we are a lot smaller than some of the other entrants.

"Developing staff and future-proofing engineering and manufacturing excellence in South Yorkshire is one of our passions and it is very pleasing that the judges have recognised the quality of our ‘grow your own’ philosophy when it comes to recruiting and developing the next generation of engineers and leaders."

In 2024 AESSEAL came out as the top UK apprentice employer in the manufacturing sector for the second time, according to the Department of Education’s annual rankings.

AESSEAL has signed up employees to 311 apprenticeships between 2017 and July 2025. More than 25 different career paths are now available to apprentices across the UK group, with recent additions including a gardener.

The company says that over the past eight years the cost of apprentice training has been over £7m, including external training fees, mentoring, management costs, and the salary cost for day release training.

A spokesperson for AESSEAL confrimed that it considers the £7,462,294 "not as a cost, but a necessary investment in our future.”

News: Metalysis doubles Gen 2 R&D demonstration units

By

Metalysis, the end-to-end manufacturer of solid-state metal and alloy powders and global leader in materials science, is increasing its output of specialist metals amid growing pressure to reduce reliance on Chinese supply chains.

With a Materials Discovery Centre on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham, the company holds the worldwide exploitation rights to the FCC Cambridge process which sees specialist powder metals created in a simple, cost effective process with significant environmental benefits.

Earlier this year, Rothbiz reported on the increasing in Gen 1 research units, which can produce grammes of output per machine per run. Metalysis has now doubled its Gen 2 units which enable transition from grams to kilograms-scale output.

The move is to meet unprecedented demand from advanced industries, including electronics, hypersonics, defence, clean energy and space. This expansion supports customers developing next-generation materials and reflects heightened urgency to secure non-Chinese midstream processing options following ongoing uncertainties surrounding new Chinese export controls on critical minerals and rare earth elements, first enacted in April.

Nitesh Shah, CEO of Metalysis, said: “We are delighted to be doubling our Gen 2 units, just seven months after we increased our Gen 1 capacity by 1/3. We are seeing increasing demand for our products at the Gen 2 level, sending material to clients for evaluation and qualification into specialist markets, with particular interest from sputtering target manufacturers.

"A range of advanced manufacturing sectors come to Metalysis because of our core suite of products - capacitor grade tantalum, scandium tri-aluminide (Al3Sc), niobium alloys and our ability to create lightweight refractory high entropy alloys, and because clients know that with all the materials that we produce we bring unique and bespoke physical and chemical attributes to the end-material, meaning we are without competition across a range of products."

China continues to dominate mining and midstream processing, with 90 per cent of global midstream capacity. To reduce this dependency, Western nations are urgently seeking alternative processing solutions. Metalysis is well-positioned to fill this gap, offering scalable midstream capability across a wide range of critical materials.

Shah added: "The recent REE controls by the Chinese have accelerated this process as clients require metal feedstocks and midstream processing from outside of China, and this will be the dominant trend across critical materials over the next few years."

News: Manvers White Water Course project launched

By

A proposed new £14m water rescue training facility in Rotherham could also provide access to water sports and outdoor adventure.

Having been discussed for a number of years, an official launch recently took place for the White Water Course Project at Manvers Lake, where Sports Minister, Stephanie Peacock MP, got an update of the plans.

Manvers Lake is central to the massive Waterfront regeneration project which includes 450 homes, business parks, hotel, retail outlets and neighbourhood facilities. Operated by a trust, a boat club provides facilities for sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, and other activities, while the lake also supports open water swimming, fishing, and cycling.

The Manvers White Water Course is planned to provide a world class training facility for fire and rescue services and other emergency services that will also offer international-standard paddling facilities due to the unique dual water channels.

Proposals involve a pump fed Whitewater Channel at North Bay for the combined use of recreation and flood rescue and training. A pumphouse will lift water at a rate of up to 10 cubic metres every second, 3 metres [10 feet] from the lake into a start pool out of which the water will flow down the course back into the lake.

The water is designed to flow at a variety of volumes and speeds from still to a torrent such that training and coaching of the Olympic sports of Whitewater Canoe slalom and Extreme slalom competition, can take place.

John Healey, MP for Rawmarsh and Conisbrough, said: “This project will be a big boost for the Dearne Valley. It will create jobs, bring more visitors into our area and give our fire and rescue crews the proper training base they need. The Trust has worked hard to get to this stage, and there is real backing behind the plans. With the right support, we can get this built and delivering for our area.”

Ashley Metcalfe, CEO of Paddle UK, added: "It is a really exciting opportunity for white water paddling – from community paddling, to talent development and beyond. We have a fantastic opportunity to be part of the project and are very much looking forward to supporting Manvers Lake to fulfil our aspirations.”

Last year the trust secured £22,500 of feasibility funding for the project from The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).

News: Pizza Hut in Rotherham to close following administration

By

A Pizza Hut restaurant in Rotherham is set to close after a UK operator of the brand entered administration.

Pizza Hut has announced the closure of 68 restaurants and 11 delivery sites following the collapse of its UK operator, DC London Pie, which has entered administration. The restructuring move will put 1,210 UK workers at risk of redundancy.

On the list of restaurants to close was the site at Cortonwood Shopping Park, which is in Rotherham.

DC London Pie, the company behind Pizza Hut's UK dine-in operations, appointed administrators from FTI Consulting earlier this week. The administration follows less than a year after the company itself acquired Pizza Hut's UK venues from insolvency.

Yum! Brands, the American parent company of Pizza Hut, stepped in with a pre-pack administration deal, securing 64 restaurant sites and protecting 1,277 jobs across the UK. The rescue package aims to ensure operational continuity for remaining outlets while providing limited protection for affected employees.

Nicolas Burquier, Managing Director of Pizza Hut Europe and Canada, said: "This targeted acquisition aims to safeguard our guest experience and protect jobs where possible. Our immediate priority is operational continuity at the acquired locations and supporting colleagues through the transition."

The financial distress came to a head approximately six weeks after HMRC filed a winding-up petition against DC London Pie, following concerns over unpaid tax liabilities. The firm, formed by Directional Capital, had previously operated Pizza Hut franchises in Sweden and Denmark before purchasing 139 UK restaurants from Heart with Smart Limited earlier this year.

A statement from the Worker's Union said: "The Pizza Hut closures represent both a painful loss for UK high streets and a stark warning about the fragility of the casual dining sector. While the intervention by Yum! Brands has prevented a total collapse, the job losses will be deeply felt across the UK. For workers affected, support, communication, and fair treatment must remain the priority."

The Pizza Hut delivery outlet at Parkgate remains open. A restaurant at Parkgate Shopping was demolished in 2015 to make way for a Nando's

News: Food brand selects Rotherham for new £15m factory

By

The Mr Whippy food brand is expanding operations with a new manufacturing base in Rotherham.

A £15m manufacturing facility will enable the brand to introduce doughnuts to its sweet treats portfolio that already includes ice cream flavour cupcakes.

A new lease has been signed for a 23,355 sq ft unit at Woodhouse Link, which is near Fence on the Rotherham side of the border with Sheffield. Unit 4 was previously used as a distribution hub by Amazon.

50 new jobs are set to be created and recruitment is underway for donut makers with production set hit 104 million a year from 2026.

Michael Corrado Jackson, company director at MJP Whippy Ltd, said: "This major investment is a crucial next step for the brand and its product expansion, and this site perfectly fitted our needs both on location, and for operational purposes being a modern, detached unit.

“We will be able to satisfy the requirements for specialist food production, automation processes, and then easy distribution of the product.

“The unit will be the manufacturing hub for the doughnut production, which will be fully launched next year and available from retailers.”

The site was marketed by Knight Frank and CPP on behalf of investment manager ESR.

Knight Frank partner Rebecca Schofield said: “This is a fantastic example of inward investment in the region to produce a brand-new facility and associated jobs in Sheffield, as part of an ambitious business expansion.

“The modern unit leant itself to becoming a state of the art food production facility and the location for distribution of the product is unparalleled.”

The brand is not part of Wall's, the producers of the Mr Whippy soft ice cream mix used in ice cream vans and cafes, and overcame a legal challenge from parent company, Unilver, to use the Mr Whippy logo on other goods and services.

The Mr Whippy cupcakes launched last year and are available in Iceland, Co-op, Home Bargains and Heron Foods stores.

The investment follows on from Mexican firm, Grupo Bimbo, selecting Rotherham as the location to switch production to the UK of its Takis brand of snacks.

Network Space brought forward 116,600 sq ft of prime industrial space across four high spec units at Woodhouse Link, building on the site of the former Laycast foundry that had been "sterilised" by previous HS2 proposals.

News: Restoring Rotherham's Pride in Place

By

Plans are being prepared on how to spend a £20m investment over the next ten years, building pride in Rotherham.

Rotherham Council has set out which types of regeneration projects are set to receive the most money.

In March, £20m earmarked for Rotherham by the previous Government was confirmed and given a wider remit focusing on neighbourhood renewal and improving social capital and renamed Plan for Neighbourhoods.

Last month it was announced that Rotherham will also receive £1.5m to restore pride in place, support community cohesion, and stimulate local economic activity through visible, short-term, community-led improvements.

Maltby was also named as one of the areas that will receive £2m every year for a decade.

Rotherham Council has now confirmed that the initial £20m Plan for Neighbourhoods for the built up area around the town centre has been renamed as the Pride in Place Programme for Rotherham Central.

Rothbiz has previously reported on the results of consultation and the government data that will support decision makers - the local Neighbourhood Board which brings together residents, local businesses, grassroots campaigners, workplace representatives, faith, and community leaders and those with a deep connection to their area.

Consultees (people who live, work or visit the main urban areas around the town centre) assessed the area low in most themes and picked out safety, run-down streets and parking as key issues.

Government data, which covers key issues such as vacant property, crime rates and footfall, shows that there is still much to do in Rotherham, even to match the national averages.

A ten year programme, the £20m is set to be split - £15m on capital and £5m on revenue.

An update from Rotherham Council shows that interventions in line for funding will come under the themes of: regeneration, high streets and heritage; health and wellbeing; education and opportunity; cohesion, safety and security; and work, productivity and skills.

As the focus is on interventions where alternative funding is less accessible, it means that housing and transport projects will not be supported.

A report shows the main target areas with £5.72m earmarked for health and wellbeing and £3.84m for regeneration, high streets and heritage.

Possible interventions under the health and wellbeing theme include co-locating services under one roof in an accessible high street location, community mental health hubs, funding for local sport and activity facilities, initiatives and drug and alcohol support.

Potential interventions under the regeneration, high streets and heritage theme include public realm improvements, green spaces, community and neighbourhood infrastructure projects, support for arts, cultural, heritage and creative activities and initiatives.

At this stage, it is not a fixed investment programme and there will be flexibility to review interventions. The Neighbourhood Board will now work with Rotherham Council, who are the accountable body for the money, to create a Regeneration Plan that needs to be submitted to the government by November 28.

News: Rotherham restaurant named as one of UK's top chip shops

By

A Rotherham restaurant is in the running for a top industry award having made the shortlist for the UK’s best restaurants in The National Fish & Chip Awards.

Whitby's at Catcliffe opened in 2011, a new build site at Poplars Business Park which includes an eat-in restaurant which can seat 180 customers, alongside a traditional takeaway.

Restaurant of the Year is the title that ten deserving outlets are hoping to take away at the 2026 edition of the industry’s premier award ceremony. In recognition of amazing food, passion for the sector, quality and high-level commitment to serving customers the best of the best, the category entrants will be on the edge of their seats as the competition heats up.

The adjudicating panel has designed a detailed review process that will grade the participants against benchmarks that reinforce best practice and professional integrity to keep standards at the highest levels.

The Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year category is open to all bona fide independent fish and chip restaurants in the UK.

Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), which runs the flagship event, said: "Small businesses are the lifeblood of the UK high street, and they provide the kind of opportunity, variety and individuality that boosts economies and brings us all together, and we are taking this opportunity to champion this year’s standout restaurants.

“The shortlisted 10 are making long-lasting contributions to uphold the great British institution of fish and chips, whether it’s with a traditional take or elevated to fine dining status. Sitting down at the table with family or friends to enjoy a fantastic meal is where memories are made and it’s wonderful to see these restaurants creating shared experiences across multi-generations with great precision. I have a feeling that Restaurant of Year is going to be a tough one to separate the winner – all the best to our contenders!”

After judges have assessed every part of their businesses, the highest scoring five will progress to the semi-finals which will be announced later this year. The Top 5 will receive an unannounced visit and taste test by an industry specialist, with the overall winner to be crowned on 25 February 2026 at the awards ceremony at the Park Plaza, Westminster Bridge.

Whitby's has two South Yorkshire restaurants, in Rotherham and Doncaster. Executives behind the business include Lord Kirkham, the founder of furniture chain, DFS, and James Foers of local construction contracting firm, Foers.

Whitbys at Rotherham was a 2024/25 Good Food Award winner – Gold Seal.

News: Rotherham Council’s Net Zero plans for borough

By

Rotherham Council is working out how the borough can reach Net Zero by 2040 which could include commercial or community-owned renewable energy generation.

A new Local Area Energy Plan would also include assessing the feasibility of a low carbon district heat network in Rotherham town centre.

In 2019, the authority declared a Climate Emergency and agreed a plan of action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated by the council and the wider borough. Targets were set around reducing the council’s greenhouse gas emissions to be net zero by 2030 and Rotherham-wide greenhouse gas emissions to be net zero by 2040.

Net zero greenhouse gas emissions means that the council will aim to reduce missions as much as possible. It will then consider balancing the amount of emissions produced with the amount it can remove from the air.

Tender documents explain that Rotherham Council wishes to understand the capacity of the market to deliver a Local Area Energy Plan (LAEP) which covers the whole borough.

The plan would set out a pathway to "Net Zero by 2040" in line with local and regional decarbonisation goals, accounting for committed government policy and spending as appropriate.

Evaluating projects, policies and partnership actions, the plan would also identify opportunities for commercial or community-owned renewable energy generation in the borough.

The documents also state that the council "wishes to understand the capacity of the market, costs and timescales associated with assessing the feasibility of a low carbon district heat network in Rotherham Town Centre, to include the identification of heat network opportunity areas, evaluation of low carbon heat sources (including but not limited to mine water heat, waste heat from industry and air, water or ground source heat pumps combined with renewable electricity generation) and technologies for implementation, delivery models, project costs, forecast return on investment and opportunities to attract external funding and investment."

Heat networks distribute heat or cooling from a central source or sources, and deliver it to a variety of different customers such as public buildings, shops, offices, hospitals, universities and homes. By supplying multiple buildings, they avoid the need for individual boilers or electric heaters in every building.

Rothbiz reported in 2023 that Rotherham Energy Limited had secured £25m to build a new Rotherham Energy Network. Proponents of the scheme, 1Energy, have given it a total investment cost of £61.84m. The low-to-zero carbon (LZC) heat network will distribute upgraded waste heat from the £150m biomass power station at Templeborough.

2.1 miles of pipes would distribute heat starting at Templeborough with a "West Network" that will go south west to the industrial areas and an "East Network" that will go north east to the south-western part of Rotherham town centre.

Passing the AESSEAL New York Stadium, the pipeline could serve Rotherham Council's Riverside House, properties on the High Street, University Centre Rotherham, Clifton Park, the Markets and Rotherham Leisure Complex.

Solar panels are also being installed at the new markets and library and Rotherham Leisure Complex.

News: Harworth celebrates the expansion of Waverley Primary Academy

By

Construction was completed at Waverley Primary Academy, the primary school located at Waverley, so that it could expand and welcome additional pupils for the new academic year.

As master developer of Waverley, Harworth Group plc, has provided funding to support the extension of the school, enabling its growth and the creation of additional places for local children. A new form of entry has now been created and the school – which is part of Aston Community Education Trust – can now accommodate up to 200 more pupils overall than in previous years.

Six new classrooms, two libraries, new restrooms, a dedicated nursery with changing rooms and office space have been built across two storeys. The expansion has also created employment opportunities with six new teachers appointed.

Built on the brownfield site of the former Orgreave Colliery, Waverley is a growing community with over 1,800 homes, green spaces and a local high street alongside the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP), which is home to leading global businesses.

Harworth worked closely with Rotherham Council and the Department for Education to build the school, which first opened in 2020. Harworth has now provided further funding to enable the delivery of this extension, which was carried out by local firm, O&P Construction.

Laura Colson, Development Director at Harworth, said: “Waverley Primary Academy is a successful primary school and a real asset to the local area. Harworth is committed to creating a sustainable community at Waverley and this means providing parents and families with access to a great local school for their children.

“We are very pleased that this extension means more pupils can enrol in the school each year, and existing pupils can make use of the brilliant new facilities.

“Harworth has a fantastic relationship with the school and we – and our occupiers at the Advanced Manufacturing Park – regularly run events with pupils. We’re looking forward to continuing to do so and supporting the school’s continued success.”

Rachel Bolton, Principal at Waverley Primary Academy, said: “Watching the expansion of the school over the last year has been exciting for everyone involved and we are thrilled with the result.

“It has been amazing to see pupils embrace the changes to the school. Many children have joined the academy from other schools this September, and all pupils have demonstrated resilience, kindness and enthusiasm, building new friendships and working collaboratively in their learning.

“At Waverley Primary Academy we are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment, where every child can thrive. The expansion has strengthened our sense of unity as a school.

“I’d like to thank staff, parents, governors and the wider community for their support over the last year, and we look forward to continuing to work in partnership with the local community.”

News: Housing proposed for more Rotherham farmland

By

Another planning application is being prepared for greenbelt land in Rotherham, this time for 175 houses at Whiston.

Rothbiz has reported on a number of proposed developments in Rotherham this year that are for sites in the local plan that were designated as "safeguarded land" rather than sites designated for housing. The 2018 plan set out that they may be needed in the future and taken out of the greenbelt after the end of the plan period in 2028.

Planning consultants are hoping to convince the local planning authority that the land should be used now to address the borough's housing needs.

Clarendon Land and Development has developed plans for a proposed housing development on 10.17 hectares of farmland south of West Bawtry Road, Whiston - another site designated as safeguarded land.

Adjoining the residential development off Guilthwaite Crescent to the east and Woodfoot road to the north, plans show that the main vehicular access would be from Long Lane into West Bawtry Road.

The consultation website explains that a "constraints-led masterplanning exercise" has "considered how the site can deliver the upmost benefits to the surrounding and wider community of Whiston including the provision of up to 175 much needed market and affordable homes.

"The proposals present an opportunity to make the most of the natural environment to create a well-designed and attractive development. New open spaces will be provided, along with safe and convenient walking and cycling routes to improve connections through the site. The plans will also enhance local ecology and habitats, while taking care to integrate the site’s natural landscape and topography to reduce impacts on the surrounding area."

House types and sizes are not set out but the 175 dwellings would include the provision of affordable homes.

Plans also show the creation of open spaces in the form of natural and amenity green spaces including a Children’s Play Area with connections to the Public Right of Way to the south and to the north onto West Bawtry Road with improved links to Whiston Meadows and Whiston Brook.

A Sustainable Drainage System which to improve the resilience of the wider area to flooding is also proposed.

The submission of an outline planning application is expected soon.

News: Work starts on Rotherham Council’s £11.5m housing development

By

Work is underway on a new development that is one of the largest single investments as part of the Council’s commitment to deliver 1,000 new Council homes for Rotherham.

45 homes will be built across three sites in Maltby – Larch Road, Addison Road and Elm Tree Road. Three brownfield sites previously the location of care homes and garage plots.

Scunthorpe-based GS Kelsey Construction Ltd was appointed last year using a Pre-Construction Services Agreement (PCSA) so that it could engage early in the construction phase. The contract is worth up to £11.5m.

When complete, the developments will include a variety of specialist bungalows, apartments and two, three and four-bedroom homes. These will meet needs of local people that have been identified where there is currently inadequate numbers of appropriate homes.

All of the homes will be future proofed through the inclusion of air-source heat pumps for the supply of heating and hot water to help reduce energy bills for tenants, whilst contributing to the Council’s commitment to reach net-zero by 2040.

Last month, Rotherham Council's cabinet agreed to make changes to who can apply to join its Housing Register to ensure it prioritises those in genuine need and makes best use of the Council’s homes. The tough but fair changes include tougher residency or work requirements and tightened rules to ensure larger properties, such as the three and four-bedroom houses in Maltby will be prioritised for families.

Cllr. Linda Beresford, Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member of Housing, said: “The Council is committed to supporting residents with their housing needs and enabling them to live well.

“We’re on track to deliver 1,000 new Council homes by summer 2027 with the biggest new Council homes programme since the 1970s, and as part of this we are continually adapting to the boroughs housing needs by delivering a range of properties to local people including apartments, bungalows and family homes.

“I’m delighted to see work starting on this development and equally pleased to hear about the local employment opportunities and other benefits being delivered as part of this project.”

The partnership with GS Kelsey will build on the Council’s award-winning work on social value which seeks to deliver local benefits through its business contracts. Through the work the developer has pledged to deliver £1.46m of social value including employing four FTE local bricklayers and five apprentices.

Leigh Smith, Pre-Construction Manager at GS Kelsey Construction Limited said: “I'd like to express our delight at partnering with Rotherham Council for the first time to build a fantastic selection of large, modern new houses in Maltby. We have been a part of the great work put in by all members of the project team over the last 12 months, so seeing a spade in the ground here is fantastic.”

GS Kelsey is also signed up to work on the £7.9m contract for new council housing in Eastwood.

News: Ron Hull Group planning Rotherham expansion

By

Leading recycling firm, Ron Hull Group, has submitted a planning application that would enable the expansion of its Rotherham site.

Back in 2011. the company bought a vacant 4-acre former warehousing site just a few hundred yards from its Mangham Road base on the Barbot Hall Industrial Estate. £4m was invested at the site's main 80,000 sq ft building with the installation of new plant and machinery.

Now plans show a new 54,000 sq ft unit between Greasbrough Road and the existing operations closer to Parkgate.

Application documents explain the the group acquired the land when Rotherham Council indicated that it would likely be used as employment use as part of the wider Bassingthorpe development. A previous application, since withdrawn, was to use the site for storage.

The latest plans explain that the aim is to move certain processes indoors and "the proposal promises better working conditions and improved control over material quality — for instance, reducing the moisture content on wood that currently devalues its quality when processed in the open.

"Full skips would be delivered into the building where their contents are emptied. The skip contents will be moved via conveyors and be subject to optical, laser and magnetic scans and selection.

"Eventually via operative checks it will be split into different material streams. Materials such as ferrous and non-ferrous metals, wood, plastics, and hardcore are then either processed on site or bundled for recycling elsewhere on site or other appropriate facilities. The aim is to extract whatever is of value from the waste and reduce to a minimum the residual that is sent for further recovery and recovered fuel (wood chip) production."

Applicants anticipate an increased throughput of the site is some 250 tonnes and due to the increase in capacity that the development will bring, there is likely to be an increase of approximately 80 HGV two-way trips over the course of the day. The council's transport officers "do not consider this to have a severe impact on the adjacent road network."

A noise assessment has also been included with the application.

If approved, the new development would increase employment by 30 members of staff.

The plans conclude: "The unit would not only provide 30 much needed jobs but also increase the percentage of recycled material recovered. This in turn would reduce raw material requirements and help increase sustainability. In short it would help meet the companies [sic] aim of 'Nil to Landfill'."

News: Rotherham delivery firm downed by dispute

By

Rotherham-based logistics specialist Humber Services Ltd, went into administration following a dispute with a major client.

The firm, based at Wath, was established in 2018 and operated a "white glove" delivery service for furniture retailers.

Experts from business advisory firm Quantuma were appointed as administrators of Humber Services Ltd on August 1 2025.

Quantuma explained that the company was experiencing cashflow difficulties as a result of a client dispute and was coming under creditor pressure.

An update from the administrators said: "Although haulage and storage were the Company's primary operations, it later began supplying complete bed components on behalf of one client. Customer orders for beds were placed through the client and fulfilled by the Company.

"However, a dispute arose as a result of customer complaints, resulting in significant issues and customer dissatisfaction. Many customers refused to pay the client, and the Company decided to cease providing this service for this client. As a result, the client issued asubstantial counterclaim against the Company, estimated at c.£1m."

In June, the company ceased to trade and the business was transferred to connected company, HS Home Deliveries Ltd. In July a creditor presented a winding up petition against the company.

Paragon Business Finance Plc was the major creditor as Humber Services' ledger was subject to an invoice factoring agreement. The value of the Company's debtor ledger was £529,338 but administrators said that the majority of the ledger is aged and/or disputed and therefore the estimated to realise value is £76,771.

Unsecured creditors are estimated to be £1.2m.

Quantuma added: "Humber Services experienced cashflow difficulties following a dispute with a major customer, which resulted in a breakdown of the relationship, non-payment for services rendered and the receipt of significant counterclaims for non-performance.

"Following creditor action, the company was at risk of liquidation and the secured creditor appointed Quantuma to gain control of the situation on a more urgent basis than liquidation would have allowed."

Quantuma managing director and Joint Administrator Andrew Watling said: “It is extremely regrettable that Humber Services was forced to cease trading, due to a series of challenging circumstances. This was a sad ending for an established Company. As Joint Administrators, our immediate priorities have been to seek to obtain maximum value for the Company’s creditors.”

News: Steelwork marks progress of £40m markets and library development in Rotherham town centre

By

The brick and blockwork is now rising at the £40m regeneration scheme in Rotherham town centre that includes the redevelopment of the ageing markets complex and a new library.

It follows the installation of the framework which has a steel tonnage of 320 tonnes.

Lead contractors on behalf of Rotherham Council, Henry Boot Construction, began enabling works on the Drummond Street site in 2023. The redevelopment of the markets is divided into two areas, an outdoor covered market, which is being rebuilt, and an adjacent indoor market, which is being revamped.

The renovations will build upon the existing mix of shops and services with the addition of a new food hub and dining area on the first floor. The outdoor market will become a flexible space which can be used for exhibitions and events when required. The second floor will host contemporary office spaces for charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups.

The adjoining library building will occupy the corner between Henry Street and Drummond Street and include a high-quality children’s area with fun spaces for reading and storytelling, and a dedicated IT area and business development facility. The second floor will contain meeting facilities and a Maker Space for learning and exploring using the latest technology.

Hambleton Steel led on steelwork apsects of the project.

The market building is using structural steelwork to further strengthen existing supporting columns and create an open-plan design to improve the visitor experience.

The outdoor covered market sits on a raised concrete slab which spans a ground floor service yard. The basement will be used to accommodate a car park and service both markets. Everything on top of the slab was removed to make space for the new outdoor covered market, but before the new structure could be installed, the supporting columns had to be strengthened.

For the new outdoor covered market, the Hambleton team were able to use mobile cranes, positioned alongside the structure which measures 50m x 43m and it reaches a height of 7.5m. The outdoor market’s steel frame has columns located in positions that matched the existing basement members. The steel-frame option for the outdoor market offered a lightweight solution which limited the strengthening and foundation work required in the basement.

The new outdoor market frame is a braced free-standing structure, which is independent of all existing structural elements. A movement joint separates it from the indoor market, while second expansion joint divides the outdoor market’s steelwork from the new library’s steel frame.

Once work is completed on the outdoor market and library, work will commence on the refurbishment of the indoor market. Work on the entire Rotherham Markets development is expected to complete in 2027.

News: Keepmoat lodge plans for 100 more houses on Rotherham greenbelt

By

National housebuilder, Keepmoat, has submitted a planning application for a parcel of farmland in Rotherham, right next to a proposed development by Barratt David Wilson Homes.

In May, Rothbiz reported on plans by Barratt David Wilson Homes for 260 homes on land at Cumwell Lane, Hellaby.

Now, an new outline application from Keepmoat is for a 3.61 hectare plot of land between Cumwell Lane and the Barratt site, close to the Centenary Hall. It shows how the current farm land could be replaced by up to 101 houses.

Plans drawn up by IDPartnership Northern (IDP) show that the proposed development would feature a mix of houses and includes provision for 25% affordable units.

One vehicular access is shown on the plans, a new priority-controlled T-junction on the western boundary of the site via Cumwell Lane, which would include a pedestrian refuge island to the south-west of the site along Cumwell Lane.

Agents, Lambert Smith Hampton, say that the site is available and in a suitable location where housing is deliverable, stating that: "The site would contribute to an appropriate level of growth in Hellaby which is identified as a ‘Principal Settlement’ in the Local Plan. It would help to support and retain the vitality of the settlement, which is a benefit for existing residents.

"The site is in a highly sustainable location near essential services and facilities to meet the requirements of future residents, such as healthcare and education provision, convenience goods, among others."

Outline planning permission for residential development on the land has been sought for years. Plans were refused numerous times in the 1970s.

The area is now dominated by the huge warehouse development alongside the M18.

Keepmoat is currently building houses across Rotherham at the former Swinden Labs site on Moorgate, and recently submitted plans for the former bus depot at Masbrough.
